Kenya is the birthplace of safaris and is one of the best places to enjoy a safari and meet the fascinating and colorful tribes. But what you might miss if you travel to Africa and skim over the experience is every day Kenyan people working to protect their wildlife, and land and empower their communities, in areas where poverty is high and wildlife is being pushed to its limits. Talking with Patrick Simpai Ledama of the grassroots organization Two Million Trees based in Kenya. The Organization aims to plant trees across Kenya and empower the local Maasai community.
Welcome to Safari stories with Karoline of king Salama Safaris. Karoline has traveled across Africa, mostly volunteering in wildlife conservation since 2008. She will be talking with local safaris guides and conservationists.   In this episode, Karoline talks with Saruni Kaelo a Maasai guide she met while volunteering in Kenya. They will talk about Naboisho, one of the private conservancies that border the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya.  Saruni will share his experiences working in the Maasai Mara National Reserve and the surrounding Conservancies. And the importance of eco-tourism for the Maasai community and wildlife conservation. Because Saruni is calling from a remote area in the African Bush there may be some technical issues.
Patrick Kilonzo Mwalua is proof that not all heroes wear capes. Known as the Waterman of Tsavo, Patrick was born in a very rural area called Kajire in Taita County, Kenya. He grew up in a small village where he attended elementary and secondary school. Patrick became passionate about caring for animals while he helped his family graze cattle and goats during the weekends. In 2016, he became a lifeline for wildlife during a drought by driving hours to fill a truck to bring 2,642 gallons of fresh water to the bone-dry watering holes around the parched wilderness of Tsavo. The animals such as elephants, buffalo, antelope, and zebras quickly became familiar with his truck and would come running as this water was their only option for survival. Oftentimes, these majestic creatures would be at the waterhole waiting for Patrick to arrive. I decided to take a trip to Kenya to meet Patrick myself and check out his small conservancy that borders Tsavo West. King Salama safaris www.kingsalamasafaris.com Patricks Facebook
My podcast is about life in the African bush, talking with people who live and work in the Kenya helping to protect wildlife and empower the community.  In this episode, I am excited to talk to Dr. Limo, a veterinarian who works with the Kenya Wildlife Services In partnership with the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. In Kenya, he works with a mobile unit that helps rescue and treat injured wildlife that would likely end in death.  His work is not easy and can be very dangerous for both the animal and the veterinarian team especially with big dangerous animals such as an elephant. Often the elephant must be separated from the herd and darted with a tranquilizer gun.  Most of the wildlife injured is because of humans with spears, snares, and poisoned arrows wounds and time is of the essence to treat these injuries.  With most wildlife species under threat, each life saved provides hope for the species.  Dr limo also talks about the importance of land designated for wildlife such as National parks/Reserves and private conservancies.  With Help planning your dream safari contact King Salama Safaris Safaris Donate to David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust
