In the previous episode of Dirty Money Moves, we learned about Barry Rothman, Mary Carole’s infamous entertainment lawyer and longtime associate. We also learned that he and Mary Carole had something in common…unbelievable financial troubles. Barry also operated a complex network of foreign bank accounts and Panamanian shell companies, which he allegedly used to hide certain assets. This was the person Mary Carole aligned herself with in 2017 as Bellum Entertainment fell apart. She found herself in desperate need of a ton of money to fend off creditors, and Barry was the man she turned to for help. Shockingly, Mary Carole was so brazen, that she baked homemade pies for bank employees and hand delivered them, just before she pulled off the biggest money grab of her crooked career. A faint breeze swept through the Catalina Foothills, skittering specks of desert sand across North Campbell Avenue, a seven-mile artery that climbs from the gates of the University of Arizona to the jagged base of the Santa Catalina Mountains. Just after 1:45 AM on February 1st, 2026 in the Catalina Foothills most residents of the wealthy enclave north of Tucson had long since gone to bed. Among them Nancy Guthrie, mother of Today show anchor, Savannah Guthrie. Lying still in a deep slumber, the 84-year-old didn’t notice when the lights on her home router suddenly flipped from a steady blue to blinking red, a subtle sign that her connection to the outside world had been severed. Nor did she see the push notification on her silenced cellphone alerting her that the doorbell camera had detected motion. By the time she realized something was wrong, it was already too late. As of the date of this recording, it’s been nearly two months since the beloved matriarch was abducted. Despite a million-dollar reward, around-the-clock press coverage, and the combined efforts of the FBI and local authorities, there remains no clear evidence of where she might be or who took her. In 2019, two women living in the Cape Coral-Fort Myers area were closely linked. Though they had never met, over the course of a single day Kristine Melton and Diane Ruiz crossed paths with the same dangerous man. After both women were murdered, the hunt was on to find their killer. On the afternoon of December 14th, 2025, an eerie, uncharacteristic silence settled over 255 S. Chadbourne Avenue. On most days, the sprawling New England-style farmhouse in Brentwood teemed with life. You never knew who might walk through the front door …Jerry Seinfeld, Larry David, Betty White, Martin Short. Icons of the entertainment world were drawn there, lured by the home’s storied past and its colorful owners: Rob and Michele Reiner. The first person to pull up to its towering iron gates that day in mid-December was no celebrity, but rather a massage therapist arriving for a 2 p.m. appointment. When no one answered, the masseuse reached out to Romy, the couple’s 27-year-old daughter. Romy arrived just after 3:30 and moved through her childhood home with deliberate steps, that low-level worry turning into a cold, sharp fear. She searched room after room until she finally reached the primary suite. Romy pushed open the heavy doors and screamed at what she saw. There, on the bed she used to sneak into as a child after she had a bad dream, lay her father, the life drawn from his face, the cream-colored sheets stained a deep, unmistakable red. She didn’t know it at the time, but her mother rested only a few feet away mercifully out of Romy’s view.  It didn’t take police long to make an arrest. The suspect came as a surprise to the public but not to those close to the Reiner family. In Season 1 Episode 2 of Dirty Money Moves, we explained how Mary Carole’s antics were exposed by Channel 2 News. We also described how Mary Carole managed to get her hands on a few million dollars through a “gifting” program connected to her family trust that she claimed was worth millions. By 2017, Mary Carole’s flagship company, Bellum Entertainment, was crumbling. She owed individuals and institutions millions of dollars. But, in the face of mounting lawsuits and creditors breathing down her neck, Mary Carole didn’t seem to flinch. Instead, she got together with her lawyer friend, Barry Rothman, who had a colorful past and ties to one of Hollywood’s most infamous scandals involving pop icon Michael Jackson. The two of them worked out a plan to get even more cash and this time around, Mary Carole was going BIG. Through lies and false documents, Mary Carole shockingly got her hands on almost $15 million from Banc of California. In October 2025, nearly six years after he vanished into a summer storm, Chance Englebert’s remains were found at the base of a rugged cliff within Scotts Bluff National Monument in Nebraska. The 25-year-old husband and father was last seen alive on July 6th, 2019, after storming off on foot following a heated argument with his wife’s family. He’d picked the wrong night to leave on foot as a brutal summer storm rolled in not long after. Police claim Chance’s death was a tragic accident. His family, however, believe otherwise. In S1 E1 of Dirty Money Moves, we left off with a discussion about Mary Carole McDonnell’s seemingly bright future. This is a woman who proclaimed herself to be the heiress to the McDonnell Douglas fortune. McDonnell Douglas was a major aerospace manufacturing company which was purchased by Boeing in 1997. In the previous episode, we also delved into Mary Carole’s life and discovered the truth about her family history, which had nothing to do with the aerospace industry. Mary Carole had a tendency to lie and overspend. Despite that, her career path in the tv business led her to being hired as the Executive VP of programming for Raycom Media. She started making good money, and bought real estate like it was going out of style. It seemed like the phony heiress was doing whatever she could to live up to the fake persona, spending lavishly and racking up debt. Eventually, Mary Carole began building a media empire of her own, Bellum Entertainment, while maintaining her position at Raycom. It went well …for a while.
