In the first episode of Direct, Eric and Levi get you on board with the podcast’s concept, talk a little bit about themselves, and preview director Quentin Tarantino’s film canon. Up next week: Reservoir Dogs. Send us your feedback and connect with the community at the Bald Move Forums or directpodcast@gmail.com
Reservoir Dogs is the first film in our Tarantino series, and it’s a doozy. In this episode, Eric and Levi break down the characters, marvel at K-Billy’s Super Sounds of the 70’s, come up with a crappy fan theory, and decide on a protagonist in this whirlwind of a motion picture. It was super fun for Eric and Levi to re-watch and breakdown Pulp Fiction. The music, the characters, the stories, all twisted together like a bloody Neapolitan pasta. In this ‘cast, the guys compare and contrast Tarantino’s first two films, fantasize about Jack Rabbit Slim’s, and unravel the love story(?) that is Pulp Fiction. Join us next week for Jackie Brown. Time to revisit one of Tarantino’s most overlooked and most interesting films. Like most QT pictures, Jackie Brown is a movie that references the past while living firmly within the era it’s set. In this ‘cast, Eric and Levi walk through the deep characters, the twisting plot, and the powerhouse performances of this (maybe too long) cinematic experience. The first installment of Tarantino’s Kill Bill series is packed with entertainment value. This week, the guys discuss Tarantino’s audience manipulation techniques, what makes QT comfortable, and the excellent performances from Lucy Liu and Sonny Chiba. The second installment of the Kill Bill series brings us incredible characters, awesome fights, and an intense Texas funeral. Eric and Levi surely enjoyed this cinematic experience. QT seems to be honing his strong voice and concrete style while paying homage to the flicks that excited him throughout his lifetime. It’s an impressive piece of work. Join us next week for Death Proof. Death Proof is supposed to be so bad it’s good — but does it actually achieve the “good” part? This week, Eric and Levi discuss one of Tarantino’s most divisive films, with a little help from their friend from Germany. The talk explores which characters are likable, the merits of practical effects, and the actors that make Tarantino sing. Join us next week for Inglourious Basterds. What a fun movie! Eric and Levi think that Inglourious Basterds proves that Tarantino is substance over style. The film has high tension, deep character development, and a furious climax. It was a pleasure to spectate, but where does it land on our list of Tarantino’s best? Join us next week for Django Unchained. Our tour of Tarantino lands on his masterful south/western legend of a former slave named Django, and his precocious mentor, Shultz. This film is like a master class in Tarantino-isms. It has bad people doing bad things, primal justice, revenge fantasies, QT’s company of actors, and memorable dialogue. It’s a great introduction into Tarantino’s wild west, where his next film will take place. Join us next week for The Hateful Eight. The eighth film from Quentin Tarantino just hit theaters. It’s a rip-roarin’ character study bundled up in the Wyoming winter. Samuel L. Jackson gives an Oscar-worthy performance as ruthless bounty hunter Major Marquis Warren, and headlines a cast of big characters with big motives and big payoff. Join us for this in-depth look at QT’s latest flick, and come back next week for our wrap-up of our Tarantino watch-through. Welp, our journey through Tarantino’s films has come to a close. We laughed, we cried, we reviled in horror as Eric and Levi attempted hideous accents. Consider this your wrap-up thread for Tarantino. How would you rank Tarantino’s films? What are your favorite Tarantino-isms? Are you a Big Kahuna person or a Red Apple person? Discuss! It’s a rip-roarin’ zombie adventure with TONS of heart. We watched Shaun of the Dead this week and used it as an opportunity to have deep existential conversations. This comedy where a kid has to blow his mom’s head off, contemplate suicide, and make amends with his dying step-father was a real treat! Join us next week as we watch Hot Fuzz. Edgar Wright – Hot Fuzz

Edgar Wright – Hot Fuzz

2016-01-2401:00:51

A quaint place in the country unfolds into a nightmare conspiracy of devious proportions. We watched Hot Fuzz this week, and took in the lunchable mega-sandwich that is the screenwriting wizardry of Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg. This movie folds in on itself more times than the Tasmanian Devil doing origami, and we couldn’t get enough! Join us next week for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Edgar Wright took a departure from his pasty-white British protagonists, and embarked on a journey of new discovery with a pasty-white Canadian protagonist. This week, we watched the ultra-kinetic coming-of-age video game sim known as Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. The film is a stage-based, third person brawler with character-driven set pieces and an impressive cast. It’s a mundane epic that punches the highlights out of your hair. Eric and Levi had a great time watching it. Join us next week for The World’s End. The First Post, The Old Familiar, The Famous Cock, The Cross Hands, The Good Companions, The Trusty Servant, The Two-Headed Dog, The Mermaid, The Beehive, The King’s Head, The Hole in the Wall, The World’s End. Edgar Wright is done. FINISHED!!! Over. For us, anyway (for now). In this show, relive the moments that made us think hard about being us while watching his films. And hear us chit chat about our next Direct director. We’ll be taking a break for about a month, but stay tuned for our next director survey and our next season of Direct. Guillermo del Toro is our next director on Direct! The voting margin was razor-thin, but in the end the stylized Mexican director who has brought us Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, and Pacific Rim took the crown. Aside from the cinematic experiences he has brought us, Del Toro is unique in that he is almost as well known for the movies he hasn’t made. What really endears him to us is his inherent geekiness, and the fervor with which he builds magnificent worlds. Here are a few links to get you primed for Guillermo: Nerdist interview Tour of del Toro’s manision Join us next week for Cronos. Cronos is Guillermo del Toro’s first feature film, and while it’s a bit rough around the edges it’s the type of film that sticks with you. With macabre imagery, morbid curiosity, and Ron Perlman’s broken nose, there’s a lot to take in. So wind up the golden bug, sleep in a toy box, and rip your skin off. Let’s go! Mimic is an uneven ride through a deep and intricate del Toro world. There were some things we really loved, some we found laughable, and others that had us scratching our heads. So create an ant farm, click your spoons together, (maybe) become pregnant from a bug bite, and join us. It’s Mimic time!
