I like to think that I make medical decisions based on science.  However, science only advances when we try things that are new and unproven.  If the last few years has illustrated anything, it is that science is never settled. This podcast is like that - you won't find this referenced anywhere, and it's likely that your Ob/Gyn or PCP will look at you (and me) like we're crazy for bringing this up.There is anecdotal evidence that you can treat the symptoms of PMS with a generic medication that's on the WHO's list of "essential medications" and can be had for pennies.Take a listen and decide for yourself!Brain Swelling "study"CSF Increase during menstrual cycle
I recently had a discussion with a patient about topical vitamin A.  She was under the impression that you have a limited number of skin cells, and that Vitamin A caused them to "wear out" and would cause thin skin with time. This show talks about how and why vitamin A is beneficial for almost all ages, and how to incorporate it into a healthy skin care plan. Was she right?  Or is there more to it?  Listen and find out!
It seems that every med spa and injector with more than 10 social media followers has started offering training courses at their spa.  They usually sound very official and include the words "Center" or "Institute" and offer the opportunity to get "certified" training in injectables.Does it help you get a job in aesthetics if you're not there already? Are they worth the money?Do you know the secret about injectable training that you learn once you are in the aesthetic industry?Listen and find out.

In this episode, I discuss the prevalence of marketing in the aesthetic industry and the importance of understanding the behind-the-scenes tactics that influence what you see, hear, and read. In this episode, I discuss the effectiveness and value of electromagnetic muscle-stimulating treatments for facial and body rejuvenation. These treatments promise to tighten muscles and reduce fat without surgery, but are those claims valid? There is data out there to answer that question that I discuss (which you can read yourself clicking the link below).Exploring non-surgical options for cosmetic improvements and their effectiveness compared to surgical procedures is important, and is a discussion that you should have with your plastic surgeon before considering either surgical or non-surgical treatments.Dr. Swanson's EM study

This show is all about primary (or first time) breast augmentation - the most popular plastic surgery procedure in the United States year after year!  Here, we will discuss the procedure itself, the operation, recovery and risks.  Like with any plastic surgery procedure, the most important aspect of the process is having a goal - what you are looking to accomplish with respect to the "look" you would like to have when surgery is over.  I discuss the various choices and decisions that need to be made, such as incision location, implant size, shape, and type.We have done a bad job as plastic surgeons making breast augmentation seem complex - it's NOT.  Based on what you want to achieve, the decisions - such as implant size, type, projection, location, incision, etc - really make themselves. Please note - I got caught up talking about the risk of infections at the end, and left out the small (<1%) risk of hematoma as one of the risks that I discuss. Keep that in mind when you listen to that section.
One of the things I hear frequently in my practice is that a patient got laser treatments somewhere else but they didn’t work. Why is this so common? The truth is that there’s a variety of lasers and laser treatments out there. You really need to work with a professional who understands your goals and challenges before recommending a solution.
