Description

The Reel Debaters is a cocktail of unapologetic movie nerds and sharp minds with a pure love for cinema broadcasting from the heart of Manitoba's vibrant and ever-growing film scene.

Each week, this crew of cinephiles and industry insiders sits down to explore film and television through a lens that’s equal parts irreverent and insightful, with a deep respect for storytelling and a sense of humour that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Need a mental image?

Could James Bond hold down a job as a nanny?
Which version of Stallone is most qualified to run a summer camp?
What kind of wedding would Indiana Jones and Lara Croft have, and who’s surviving it?
And seriously… could Conan the Barbarian handle a high school sex-ed class?

Outside of the debates, you also get to experience the Reel Talk sessions, which descend into rich conversations around the medium and feature interviews from in their own backyard, all the way to Hollywood with Actors, producers, directors, and any voice shaping the screen today.

But behind the laughs and the ludicrous hypotheticals is a genuine curiosity about how we connect to the stories we tell, the characters we create, and the impact film has on who we are.

This is more than another movie podcast.
It’s a cultural jam session celebrating film, and to the joy of asking "What if?"

Recorded at Sick Bad Panda Studios in Winnipeg, MB

Welcome back to the circus. Episode #311 is stacked with fan fiction fantasies, Oscar-season chaos, and a classic Reel Debaters internet skirmish that absolutely did not need to happen. This episode includes:The Teen Heartthrob Fan Fiction DebateWe challenged each other to pitch the best teen heartthrob fan fiction idea imaginable. Tropes were abused. Logic was abandoned. Dignity left the building early. You’re welcome.Movie ReviewsMel Brooks’ The 99 Year Old Man – Does the comedy legend still have the spark, or is this one strictly for the diehards?Predator: Badlands – New setting, same primal rules. We break down whether the franchise still knows how to hunt. The Threads Fight That Wouldn’t Die...Michael found himself deep in the trenches of Threads after arguing that Avatar being nominated for Best Costume Design actually makes sense. What followed was a spirited, slightly exhausting debate about CGI, world-building, and where costumes truly begin and end. Oscar Drama Corner...We also dig into why Wicked: For Good failed to land an Oscar nomination, with industry chatter pointing to awkward marketing, confusing campaign messaging, and reported voter fatigue. This week, we descend into the shadowy corridors of Safehaven, the new supernatural thriller premiering on Tubi. This week's guest is a double-threat force behind the series: the head of special FX and makeup design and the actor who steps into the enigmatic role of Francis Zelk, Aaron MerkeWe get to find out more about the architect behind Safehaven’s bruised dreamscapes and haunting practical effects, and also being one of the faces pulling you deeper into the show’s mystery. On this episode, he walks us through the strange dance of designing terror for the cast while performing within it. From early concept sketches to surreal on-set moments, from building creatures out of psychology to embodying a character tied to the show’s unsettling atmosphere, we explore how Safehaven’s world was stitched together.About SAFEHAVENBased on the graphic novel, Safehaven follows Jenna Frost, a teenager tormented by visions that claw at her sanity and reality. As those visions take shape, the town’s darkest corners crawl into the light. This week on The Reel Debaters, we sit down with actor and stunt performer David MacInnis for a wide-ranging conversation about the craft, the industry, and his latest bruises courtesy of Bob Odenkirk in Nobody 2.David is known for his commanding yet vulnerable performances. A highly physical and imposing performer, trained in both the martial arts and dance, he infuses his characters with a deep, physical life. David is a classically trained actor, having graduated from the prestigious Conservatory Acting Programme at the University of Alberta, he is as comfortable on set as he is on stage. With over 60 film and television credits, David continues to be highly sought after in the ultra-competitive Toronto market. He has worked on-camera across the country and on stage in Canada and the US.@david.macinnis on InstagramDavid 's Facebook pageDavid 's WebsiteAlso in This Episode:How theatre training shapes an actor’s foundation and disciplineThe unexpected ways Wall Street has influenced the streaming eraWhy self-taping is both a blessing and a curse for working actorsHost(s): Micheal PetrowGuest: David MacInnisExecutive Producer: Michael PetrowEditing & Mixing: Micheal PetrowRecorded at: Sick Bad Panda Podcast Studios, WinnipegInstagramThreadsFacebookEmail: thereeldebaters@gmail.comAsk a QuestionRD voicemail New Episodes weeklyHit 'Follow' or 'Subscribe' so you never miss a reel moment.Rate & ReviewIf you laughed, yelled at your speaker, or googled a reference — leave us a 5-star review.
