Henry Ott is a third-generation turkey hunter from South Alabama with over 60 years of experience in the woods. He learned from his father and grandfather—long before modern gear, when success depended on woodsmanship, patience, and understanding turkeys at a deeper level. Over decades of hunting the same country, Henry noticed something most hunters overlook: Gobblers aren’t random. They run a route. And if you’re not set up on it… you’re already too late. In this episode, Henry breaks down how turkeys actually move, how hens dictate everything a gobbler does, and why positioning—not calling—is what consistently kills birds. This is old-school knowledge built from a lifetime of watching turkeys in big timber, long before today’s tactics took over. If you’ve ever had a gobbler hang up, disappear, or just not do what he “should” do… this will change how you think about turkey hunting. In this episode: • Why gobblers follow a route instead of moving randomly • How hens control gobbler movement throughout the day • The biggest setup mistake most hunters make • Why chasing gobblers almost always backfires • How to get ahead of a gobbler instead of behind him • Lessons learned from 60+ years of turkey hunting Got a question for the show? Turkey season is here, and we're pulling one out of the vault for this week's throwback Thursday episode. Scott Ellis joins us for one of the most tactical turkey hunting conversations we've ever had on the show. Scott breaks down his signature "hide the hen" setup strategy — the idea that where you sit when you call matters just as much as how you call. If a gobbler can look over and confirm no hen is standing there, he's gone. Scott walks through exactly how to use terrain features like elevation changes, bends in roads, field edges, and thickets to get birds into gun range before they ever see you. Beyond the setup, Scott covers how to handle pressured and non-callable birds, how to read a gobbler's behavior and adjust your aggression level on the fly, afternoon hunting tactics, calling volume based on pressure and weather, and how to pick which bird to target when multiple toms are on the roost. If you're headed to the woods this season, this one is worth the listen. Got a question for the show? For decades, Lamar Williams has been quietly shaping the world of custom turkey calls. But outside of tight circles of call makers and serious turkey hunters, most people have never heard his story. Lamar started chasing turkeys in the 1960s — long before turkey hunting exploded in popularity. Over the years he became a respected custom call maker, building calls that serious hunters seek out across the country. But if you expect this conversation to be about gear… you’re going to be surprised. According to Lamar, buying more calls won’t make you a better turkey hunter. What actually matters is something most modern hunters overlook. Woodsmanship. In this episode, Lamar shares lessons learned from over 50 years of hunting wild turkeys, including how fall hunting teaches you more about turkey behavior than most hunters ever learn, why gobblers often won’t come back when you call, and the skills that separate consistently successful hunters from everyone else. If you want to understand turkeys — not just call at them — this conversation is packed with hard-earned wisdom. In this episode we discuss: • Why woodsmanship matters more than turkey calls • Lessons from  fall turkey hunting • Why gobblers often won’t come back when you call • How to understand turkey travel patterns and terrain • The story behind Lamar’s custom turkey calls • Why experience in the woods still beats gadgets This episode is a masterclass in old-school turkey hunting knowledge. If you enjoy learning from hunters who have spent a lifetime in the woods, you’ll love this one. Got a question for the show? In this Q&A episode we tackle a few frustrating turkey hunting situations most hunters eventually face. • Turkeys that stay just across a creek and won’t cross • Fresh turkey sign but no gobbling • What to do when birds won’t come to your calls We break down how we’d approach each scenario, when to dial back the calling, and what these situations might actually be telling you about the birds you’re hunting. Topics Covered • Why some gobblers won’t cross terrain barriers • What sign means when birds aren’t gobbling • When calling less can actually work better • Adjustments to make when turkeys won’t respond Got a question for the show? Turkey season is right around the corner, and in this episode we dive into some of the most common questions hunters have heading into the woods. We cover when locator calls actually work (and when they don’t), how often you should check on a gobbling turkey before the season opens, and what to expect when hunting pressured public land in the South. We also talk through shotgun setups, choke and ammo combinations, and how long it realistically takes most hunters to kill their first turkey. Topics in this episode: • When and how to use locator calls for turkeys • How often you should scout a gobbling bird • Dealing with hunting pressure on public land • Turkey choke and ammo setups that actually work • How long it takes most hunters to kill their first turkey If you’ve got turkey questions you want answered on a future episode, submit them on our website. Today we are joined by our buddy Aaron Warbritton of The Hunting Public! Aaron is a rare blend of old-school woodsmanship and modern tactical thinking. He understands the fundamentals, but he also adapts to how turkeys behave under heavy pressure. That combination is what makes him one of the most effective public land hunters that we know. In this conversation, we cover: How to find “the X” on unfamiliar public land Why habitat + pressure dictate everything How to break down new ground fast Early vs late season turkey strategy When to sit patiently — and when to move How pressure changes gobbler behavior Beating other hunters without racing them Reading terrain for the 30–50 yard kill window Locator calls on pressured birds Why most hunters leave too early The mindset required to hunt multiple states successfully This is a masterclass in public land turkey hunting — from the mental approach to the in-the-woods execution. If you want to consistently kill public land gobblers anywhere, this one is worth your time. Got a question for the show? Today we have a special interview for you guys. We were able to sit down with 82 year old Claude Strother of Gastonburg, Alabama for an in depth discussion on his life & turkey hunting. At the time we recorded this interview Mr. Claude was battling cancer, and unfortunatley he passed away just a few weeks before the release of this episode. In this episode, Claude shares stories from the early days of turkey hunting, how the sport has changed over the years, and what he believes most hunters get wrong today. We talk old-school turkey hunting tactics, calling styles, patience, woodsmanship, and why getting close still matters more than gear or gimmicks. Along the way, Claude reflects on a lifetime spent in the woods, the lessons turkey hunting has taught him, and the importance of preserving hunting stories, southern heritage, and the culture that comes with it. This episode isn’t just about killing turkeys...it’s about wisdom earned, mistakes made, and a way of life that’s slowly fading. Got a question for the show? In this Thursday Q&A episode, we break down listener questions covering funnels, mock scrapes, late-season doe scouting, clearing shooting lanes, and aging deer. We dive into when (and when not) scrapes actually matter, how trail cameras can mislead you during the rut, and why deer movement often looks very different in real time than it does on camera. We also talk through cold-weather rut behavior, hunting pressure, scent disturbance, and how to adjust your strategy as scraping activity dies off and chasing ramps up. Along the way, we share real-world observations from recent hunts and discuss why hunting the fringes and reading sign on the ground can be more valuable than relying solely on trail cam data. In this video, we sit down with our good buddy Scott Seales, who has been a big deer hunting mentor for us in the last few years! Scott's advice directly helped Jacob and Andrew tag their last two bucks, including Jacob's biggest Alabama buck to date! We start by going over how Jacob found the spot he hunted and tagged his big buck on a new-to-him piece of public land in Alabama. We then discuss why a lot of hunters have the skills they need to be successful, yet they still struggle. Scott goes over how he keeps things simple and explains where most guys go wrong when it comes to overthinking big bucks. We are also joined by Andrew's stepdad, Mike Dillon to get an update on his season and learn what has made the biggest difference for him going from not seeing many deer last season, to tagging two bucks and a doe this season. In this episode we are hitting some listener Q&A submissions, then talking about Andrew's recent successful hunt on his second big buck of the season! Listener questions: Should I hunt over this signpost rub? Are hiking trails good for accessing spots clean? Hot scrape post rut: hunt it or stay on food? We then dive into what Andrew has learned this season when it comes to trail cams, and the kind of sign that beats trail cam pictures any day, but especially during the rut! absolutely the best podcast for the area I'm in. I can relate with different tactics from all their guests. I am very fortunate to have the job that I have in landscaping and can listen to them as I work. the only problem is it makes me want to leave the job and hit the woods. still working on my wall hanger. but have total faith it won't be long I look at the woods totally different. and try to implement woodsmanship every time I'm there. keep up the good work guys. thanks for all your advice and all the great questions you are asking these professional whitetail hunters.
