"Don’t simplify. Delete"As business leaders, when we're overwhelmed, our go-to questions often revolve around simplification—can we find a simpler way, eliminate steps, or use fewer resources? However, a more fundamental question to ask might be: Is this task necessary in the first place? It's a common belief that entrepreneurs excel at solving problems, but the most successful ones are those who sidestep problems altogether. This is a significant lesson that we could adopt more widely in the corporate world. In the latest episode of the How to Live Podcast, Arjun Purkayastha shares potent insights on integrating entrepreneurial thinking into the corporate sphere. As the Senior Vice President and Managing Director at Reckitt, and a dear friend, Arjun brings a wealth of experience from his tenure at leading MNCs like Procter & Gamble, across diverse regions including Singapore, South Korea, India, the UK, and China. Have you ever felt that "Nice guys finish last"?We've all rooted for the underdog. The hero who helps others but is always left behind. However in the end, against all odds, finishes on top. This happens only in the movies right? When we look around, especially in the competitive business world, the reality seems grim. We see good people who give without expecting, being overshadowed by those who master the art of taking credit. I noticed this in my early career but with time a fascinating shift occurred - the power of reputation took control. People began to recognize who puts in the effort and who free rides. Givers start emerging on top. This revelation was solidified when I read Adam Grant's "Give and Take," thanks to a recommendation from my speaking mentor Avi Liran. Adam’s research showed that takers may have short-term gains, but it's the givers who truly come out on top. There’s a caveat though. In the latest episode of the How to Live Podcast, I build on Adam’s theory and introduce my thesis around meaningful and desperate giving, examine the dynamics of the asking-giving relationship, and yes reveal the caveat for thriving as a giver.Discover why not all forms of giving are created equal, and how to ensure your generosity leads to success.Episode Shownoteshttps://howtolive.life/episode/058-purpose-in-everyday-lifeRelated Episode#058 Purpose in everyday lifeSpotify: https://howtolive.life/ep58spotifyApple Podcasts: https://howtolive.life/ep58appleLeave us a messagehttps://howtolive.life/contactAbout Sharad Lalhttps://www.sharadlal.net/Follow usLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sharadlal24/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PodcastHowtolive/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/podcasthowtolive/

“I’m my own harshest critic”, many high achievers admit. Are they successful because of this or despite this? Research reveals a compelling answer. While self-criticism can be a driving force, studies show that self-compassion is even more effective. It doesn't mean letting ourselves off the hook but offers clear, honest feedback with kindness. On the other hand, harsh self-judgement leads to shame and stress.Kindness and clarity, as opposed to shame and stress, provide better motivation for growth and learning. In our latest podcast, we dive deep into self-compassion with Dr. Kristin Neff, a pioneer in the field. Her groundbreaking work has defined self-compassion as a vital mental health tool and a catalyst for personal growth. Dr. Neff's two-decade-old self-compassion scale has earned her worldwide recognition. She’s appeared in the world’s top podcasts and has been featured in prestigious publications like the New York times Forbes, the Atlantic Harvard business review. In today's conversation, we'll unravel the essence of self-compassion—what sets it apart from self-pity and self-love, why it trumps self-esteem, and how it equips us to conquer comparisons and jealousy. What would you do in that moment of choice?Well, that's the very quandary our special guest, Jaideep Bansal, faced years ago during his tenure at Procter & Gamble. As you might have guessed, he chose the path less traveled, the one leading to social entrepreneurship. Here's a quick snapshot of Jaideep's remarkable journey: He's an award-winning social entrepreneur, dedicated to bringing sustainable development to the remotest corners of India. As the co-founder and CEO of GHE Impact Ventures, he's brought solar energy and sustainable progress to half a million people across five remote regions in India.Jaideep's efforts earned him the prestigious 2020 UN Climate Action Award. His passion and unwavering commitment to his mission resonated so deeply with me that I almost felt like packing my bags and joining him in the mountains. While I haven't made that leap just yet, I did manage to secure permission from the folks at P&G to share this enlightening conversation right here on "How to Live."In our discussion, Jaideep and I talk about how privilege can be used to create impact, how social entrepreneurship is not charity but a symbiotic relationship, and the profound change that access to basic necessities like electricity can bring to society. Over 3500 years ago in Ancient India, the Vedas were created as guidelines on how to live a good meaningful life. These have been passed on orally over centuries and are probably even more useful today. In today’s episode we look at how ancient Vedic wisdom can be applied in the modern world. We have with us Anand Mehrotra - a renowned spiritual teacher, yogi, and entrepreneur, and one of the youngest spiritual masters in the world. Born and raised in Rishikesh, India, the birthplace of yoga, Anand's journey into the world of spirituality began at a very young age.He founded the Sattva School of Yoga, developing a method that combines yoga, meditation, and wisdom teachings to help individuals unlock their full potential. His teachings emphasize the importance of balance, inner exploration, and self-realization.Beyond his role as a spiritual teacher, Anand is also an avid philosopher and philanthropist. He is actively involved in charitable initiatives, focusing on education, healthcare, and sustainable community development in rural India. His multiple books, videos, podcasts and content have impacted people all across the world with many visiting him in Rishikesh for various yoga and meditation programs. He’s not your typical guru. He bridges the gap between ancient wisdom and contemporary living. And that’s the focus of our conversation today. We talk about existential angst, knowledge vs ignorance, love vs fear, play vs battle, comparisons vs flow, result vs process, relationships and more. Episode Shownoteshttps://howtolive.life/episode/048-ancient-vedic-wisdom-with-anand-mehrotraRelated Episodes#039 Life principles from yoga with Travis EliotSpotify: https://howtolive.life/ep39spotifyApple Podcasts: https://howtolive.life/ep39appleGet in touch with Anandhttps://anandmehrotra.in/Leave us a messagehttps://howtolive.life/contactAbout Sharad Lalhttps://www.sharadlal.net/Follow usLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sharadlal24/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PodcastHowtolive/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/podcasthowtolive/
Nostalgia is not just a sentimental journey; it's a powerful mental health tool that can help us find certainty and security in an ever-changing world.Recently, I watched this movie "Air" - the story of how Nike created the Air Jordans.  Not only did it have a captivating story, talented actors, and gripping drama, but what I loved most was that warm, fuzzy feeling of being transported back to the 1980s.And you know what? It was exactly what I needed on that tough day. It lifted my mood, filled me with joy, and warmed my heart. Needless to say, it helped me sleep well and wake up the next day feeling rejuvenated. It got me wondering, is there something more to nostalgia than just that heartwarming feeling? So, I decided to dig deeper and research. And guess what I found out?
