For years, Gone South has been a podcast about crime in the American South. But in Season 5, we’re widening the lens.
Through deeply reported, narrative-driven stories—and conversations with journalists, historians, musicians, and people who’ve lived these stories firsthand—we’re digging into the myths, scandals, and power structures that still shape the South… and, in many ways, the country itself.
From re-examining the cultural meaning of the Alamo to tracing the family history of Alex Murdaugh to investigating the federal indictment of New Orleans’s former mayor, each episode stands alone. Together, they paint a picture of what this region really is and how it came to be.
Gone South is a show for people who want to understand how history lingers and why it still matters now.
Written and hosted by award-winning journalist Jed Lipinski, Gone South is the recipient of the Edward R. Murrow Award for Outstanding Achievement in Journalism.
Previous serialized seasons include:
- Season 1: Who Killed Margaret Coon?
- Season 2: The Dixie Mafia
- Season 3: The Sign Cutter

liberty university isnt a real school lol it's just an evangelist propaganda institute. my brother in law went there (and left because it was a sham)
stop with the advertisement it ruins the whole pod cast experience , its disrespectful to Margaret and her story your telling about . show some respect
I can understand why Margaret Coon was murdered: she was extremely promiscuous, selfish, unempathetic, and just an overall bad person.
Patricia Curry. What a nut!
The justice system is so flawed and messed up! It's truly sad to hear about all of this in my home state of Louisiana!
Nothing wrong with liking animals more than human beings or caring about animals more. but it does make this Patricia woman very unusual amongst sociopaths and psychopaths.
Only thing I didn't understand was how the killer got close enough to her with the dog. When nobody could get close to her when she was dead. Because the dog wouldn't let them get close.
Great podcast. Leaves you wanting to hear more.
I'm really enjoying this podcast! I'm feel super anxious and excited for the next episode each time one ends.
