I’m going to say something that surprises people: I don’t usually hire the most qualified person. I hire the one who stands out.I’ve been hiring people in the Philippines since 2005. My very first hire is still with me today. That’s 20 years. And after two decades of reading applications, interviewing, and making both great and terrible hires, I’ve seen the same patterns over and over again. This episode is different. For the first time ever, I’m talking directly to workers on OnlineJobs.ph.But if you’re a business owner, don’t skip this. Because what I’m really doing here is pulling back the curtain on how employers actually think when we’re hiring. There are way more applicants than jobs. That’s just reality. So if you’re doing what everyone else is doing (mass applying, generic cover letters, leaning too hard on AI), you’re invisible. And invisible people don’t get hired. What does work is simple, but not easy. It’s about intention. Effort. Honesty. And yes, standing out in ways that actually matter. Here’s what I break down in this episode 👇🟢 Why “stand out” matters more than experience📩 Why mass applying is the fastest way to get ignored📌 How following instructions instantly filter you to the top🔍 Why knowing who you’re applying to changes everything🎯 How using more apply points signals real intent🧠 Where AI helps and where it absolutely backfires⚠️ Why faking skills leads to bad reviews and short-term work🤝 How being yourself leads to long-term, loyal hiresAt the end of the day, employers aren’t looking for perfect resumes or AI-written answers. We’re looking for real people we can trust, train, and build with long-term. When you get that right, everything changes on both sides.▶️ If you want to understand how real hiring decisions are made, hit play.💬 What’s the hardest part of hiring or getting hired right now?🚀 Ready to build a long-term team? I used to think outsourcing to the Philippines was about cost. Like, I’m just saving money. What I didn’t know was it was actually about freedom. And the weird part? I didn’t lose control. I got more.Back in 2005 I hired my first person in the Philippines. At first, I had to teach him everything. But after a few months it was almost like there were two of me, and it was one of the most liberating experiences of my life.Fast forward to today: I’ve got about 55 full-time people in the Philippines, nobody in the U.S., and we run an 8-figure business like that. Not by “sending work overseas,” but by bringing people into the company as real staff.Because when you hire the right way, you’re not losing control. You get to spend your day thinking like a CEO instead of getting interrupted every 10 minutes. Here’s what I break down in this episode: 👥 Why outsourcing the right way feels like cloning yourself 🎯 How hiring staff (not freelancers) keeps you in control 🌙 What really happens when work gets done overnight 💸 Real salary ranges and why this isn’t “cheap labor” 🎓 Why Filipino workers are thinkers, not task robots 🤝 How loyalty changes everything about training and turnover 📈 Why scaling stops feeling risky when talent is easy to accessIf you’ve been scared outsourcing means chaos, miscommunication, and losing your grip on the business, you’re thinking about the wrong model.Don’t “send stuff overseas.” Bring someone in. Train them. Trust them. That’s when the business starts running without you doing everything.▶️ If you want more freedom and more control, hit play.💬 What’s the #1 thing you’re afraid to delegate right now? I’ve had a bunch of people ask me lately, “Is AI replacing virtual assistants?” And the simple answer is no — not even close. What we’re actually seeing is the biggest increase in demand for Filipino VAs we’ve ever seen. Month after month, employers keep hiring more. And the crazy part is… VAs are getting better at their jobs because of AI, not worse. My team in the Philippines uses AI every single day. They use it in our social media, our SEO, our design, our programming, our video editing — everywhere. And they’re better now at almost everything they do than they were before AI showed up. It lets us create better products, better marketing, enter new markets, and do things we’ve struggled with for years. And the other big surprise is that AI didn’t just make the work better — it made the hiring better too. I had to rethink how I evaluate applicants. I assume every cover letter is written by AI now, so I just focus on the signals that actually matter. At some point I realized AI could help me evaluate all those signals without taking the human element out of the process, so we built OnlineJobs.ph’s AI matching system around them. When I started actually using it, it blew me away.It handled all the data instantly. It rated people the same way I would — just without me spending hours doing it. It filtered out 80–90% of the wrong applicants right away and pushed the best ones straight to the top.And honestly, it solved the biggest hiring problem of all: wasted time. Here’s what I’m seeing:⚡ VAs using AI are doing better work than ever before📈 Demand keeps growing — no slowdown at all🔍 Most cover letters don’t matter; real signals do🚀 AI instantly filters applicants so you skip the bad ones🧠 Better data = better decisions = better hires💼 You can hire fewer people and still get more done🌏 Now is actually a great time to hire in the PhilippinesThe truth is, AI is making everything better — hiring, working with your VA, the quality of the work, the speed. All of it is improving because of AI.And if you’re thinking about hiring someone in the Philippines, this is a really great time to do it.▶️ Hit play and see why hiring a Filipino VA just got 10x easier💬 Got questions about hiring or AI? I can’t tell you how many people assume the Philippines has the same holidays we do. Thanksgiving? Nope. New Year’s Eve? Yep, that’s a holiday for them. Meanwhile, we’re over here thinking the whole world shuts down on the 4th of July. It’s funny how we assume our culture is the default. Once you realize their holiday calendar is completely different, a lot of things suddenly make sense—why your VA didn’t work yesterday, why December feels busy for totally different reasons, why they’re hesitant to start a new job right before Christmas. Their holidays are important, their families are important, and it’s just a very different set of priorities than we have in the US.The good news? You can absolutely make this work. Your VA can work during the holidays. They usually want to help—you just need to set expectations early, talk through the days they really need off, maybe swap shifts, offer half days, or plan for time off in January. There’s no standard. You figure it out together. And once you do, everything gets easier. Here are a few things I’ve learned that make holiday season work smoothly with Filipino VAs:📅 Different holidays aren’t a problem—confusion is. Clarity fixes everything.👂 Your VA wants to support you; they just need to know what the plan is.🎁 Trading December hours for January rest is a win-win more often than you think.🕓 Half shifts keep the business running while giving them the family time they need.💡 Written policies remove guesswork, especially for new hires who don’t want to disappoint you.👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Respecting their family priorities builds long-term trust faster than anything else.🔄 When you plan early, December becomes predictable instead of stressful.Holiday season feels complicated only when nobody knows what the rules are. Once you talk about it—really talk about it—it stops being stressful. Your VA knows what you need. You know what they need. And December becomes manageable instead of confusing.▶️ Hit play to see how simple December becomes when you plan it right.💬 Got questions about holidays or time off? I see business owners make the same mistake over and over—they chase “cheap outsourcing” and end up paying way more than they should. 💸Here’s the truth: outsourcing done right isn’t about cutting corners or hiring the cheapest option. It’s about building something sustainable—a team that actually helps your business grow instead of creating more problems to manage. When I first started outsourcing, I thought I was saving time by letting an agency handle it all.Big mistake. They marked up costs, added bad management, and I lost one of the best programmers I ever had because of “office politics” I couldn’t control.Once I started hiring directly from the Philippines, everything changed.I got better people, more loyalty, lower risk, and the kind of long-term ROI you just don’t get from freelancers or BPOs.Here’s what you’ll learn in this episode:💰 The real cost of outsourcing—salary, benefits, time, and hidden fees🏢 Why agencies and BPOs charge more while giving you less control⚙️ How hiring direct in the Philippines saves money and builds loyalty📉 The hidden time and risk costs most owners overlook🧠 Why a few hours up front save you years later🤝 How Filipino loyalty turns short-term hires into lifetime teammates📈 The math behind 100x–1000x ROI from people who stay and grow with youI’ve been doing this for 20 years, and here’s what I know: the cheaper, faster, easier route isn’t cheaper, faster, or easier in the long run.The real win is bringing great people into your company and letting them grow with you. That’s where the magic happens.▶️ Hit play to see the real math of outsourcing—and how to make it work long-term.💬 Which part of outsourcing costs do you think most business owners underestimate? Can a VA in the Philippines really build your funnel? Short answer: yes. Longer answer: absolutely. My Filipino team built three funnels for me from scratch—including one VA who had never touched funnels before. That’s the beauty of outsourcing. You don’t need some expensive “expert.” You just need someone loyal, smart, and willing to learn. Here’s what I cover in this episode:🛠 How a VA with no experience built 3 full funnels (and nailed it)🎯 Why copy, design, and funnel building are 3 different roles—and how to align them🔍 The trick I use to spot real funnel experience vs. “sample work” from a course📈 Why funnel success is more about the business owner than the VA⏳ How hiring one VA to build and market funnels creates long-term freedomWhen it comes to building funnels, you don’t always need an “experienced” funnel builder. You need someone who can learn the software, follow your process, and keep working on it long after launch.▶️ Hit play now and see how to stop building funnels yourself and finally hand it off with confidence.💬 Have you ever tried handing off funnel work to a VA? Do you really have to train a VA?I used to think if I just hired someone “already experienced,” I wouldn’t have to. Turns out that’s not true—you always have to do some training. Even a senior programmer still needs to learn my processes, tools, and expectations. What I’ve learned is this: training isn’t just about skills—it’s about trust. And when your VA trusts you, they’ll stick around, work harder, and even surprise you with how much they can do. Here’s what I break down in this episode 👩‍💻 Why I usually pick “young & hungry” over experienced hires—they grow into loyalty faster🎥 How a quick screen-share video saves hours of writing instructions🧑‍🏫 The simple first-task formula I use: record → send → let them try → refine🔑 Why you shouldn’t make new VAs decide everything too soon🛠️ The exact tools I use every day: Snagit, Loom, TinyTake🤝 How training builds trust—and why trust is what makes them stick📈 Why I hardly train at all today (and how early effort pays off for years)If you’ve been thinking, “I don’t have time to train,” flip it: you don’t have time not to. Training is the simplest lever to earn trust, reduce churn, and get work done your way—without micromanaging.▶️ Hit play to see the exact training flow I use—and steal it for your next hire.💬 What’s one thing you’ve trained (or avoided training) that made a difference? I built an eight-figure business working 15 hours a week—and the reason is simple: Filipino Virtual Assistants. Most business owners think hiring a VA is risky, complicated, or only good for small tasks. But here’s the truth: a VA can do almost anything you can do on a computer or phone—admin, customer support, bookkeeping, marketing, design, coding, even running six-figure ad campaigns. In this episode, I walk through everything I’ve learned since hiring my first VA back in 2005 (who still works with me today). Where to hire, what to look for, what tools to use, how to train, and how to build trust—and why the leap you’re scared to take is the one that gives you back your time, your freedom, and your best chance at real growth. Here’s what you’ll take away from this episode:✅ What a VA really is (and isn’t)—not just “cheap help,” but long-term teammates💸 Why the Philippines wins—lower cost plus a huge pool of motivated talent🧩 The two hiring goals that never change: get work done + buy back your time🗂️ Tasks you can delegate right now—email, support, bookkeeping, content, design, SEO, paid ads, even sales🕵️ Where to hire and why it matters—skip agencies & platforms, go direct on OnlineJobs.ph🧠 Hire for hunger, train the skills—loyalty and communication beat “expert” every time🧰 My tool stack that just works—Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom, Basecamp, Loom, Canva, Asana🤝 Trust goes both ways—pay on time, give feedback, be a good employer🌙 The overnight execution loop—train once, sleep, wake up to finished work📈 Proof it compounds—I trained a VA from social to ads; now she manages $100k/month🏆 Longevity is the secret—my first VA from 2005 still works with meAt the end of the day, outsourcing is about creating a system where good people do great work for a long time. People always ask me: “John, is outsourcing good or bad?” And my answer is—it’s neither. Outsourcing isn’t black and white. It’s not inherently good, and it’s not inherently bad. It all depends on how you approach it and how you treat the people you bring into your business. Most business owners only see the stereotypes: lost control, jobs shipped overseas, cultural headaches. But that’s not the reality I’ve lived for the last 20 years. Outsourcing has helped me work 17 hours a week, build a loyal Filipino team that’s stuck with me for over a decade, and focus on the work I’m actually good at instead of drowning in tasks I shouldn’t be doing. Here’s what you’ll take away from this episode:💸 Why cost savings aren’t the only reason to outsource⏳ How outsourcing buys back your time and focus🌎 The cultural differences that don’t have to hold you back🤝 How outsourcing creates growth for you and for the people you hire📈 Why “insourcing” with Filipino VAs beats the old agency modelWhen you stop looking at outsourcing as “cheap labor” and start seeing it as a way to build loyal, long-term relationships, everything changes. The question isn’t “is outsourcing good or bad?” The real question is—how are you going to use it to grow your business and your freedom? Done the right way, outsourcing doesn’t just change your workload. It changes your life.▶️ Hit play and let me show you how outsourcing can work for you, not against you.💬 What’s the #1 concern holding you back from outsourcing right now? I’ve heard it for years: “Isn’t outsourcing just taking advantage of people?” If your goal is to squeeze the lowest rate out of someone, yeah—maybe that’s questionable. But if you care about the people you hire, outsourcing to the Philippines can be one of the most ethical, life-changing decisions you ever make—for them and for you. When I first started hiring full-time Filipino VAs back in 2005, people would ask me all the time: “How do you sleep at night?” What they didn’t realize was this—hiring someone in the Philippines can actually give them a better job than they could get locally. Better pay, better hours, better stability, and more time with their family. Here’s how to make it happen 💵 Pay wages that are fair and competitive in the Philippines’ market🛠 Offer stable, long-term work so your VA can plan and save📈 Create growth opportunities—skills, raises, promotions🙂 Treat them like a human, not a task machine🏝 Respect work-life balance (no “24/7 availability” nonsense)📅 Honor local holidays and the 13th-month pay tradition🤝 Provide benefits that improve their life and loyaltyWhen you hire this way, you’re not just getting work done—you’re giving someone the ability to build a better future. And in return, you get a loyal, motivated team member who sticks with you for years. Marketing doesn’t have to be hard—it just has to get done. And the fastest way I’ve found to actually make it happen? Stop doing it all yourself. Most business owners fail at marketing because they never find the right person to do the work. They’re stuck creating posts, writing content, running ads—and wondering why nothing scales. The truth is, you can outsource your marketing (yes, even the parts you think are “too important”), keep quality high, and free up your time to actually run your business.I’ve built full marketing systems—social media, SEO, YouTube, podcasting, ads, newsletters—without touching the day-to-day work. My team in the Philippines handles it all. I just guide the strategy. And they’re not just “contractors”—they’re loyal, full-time team members who bring fresh ideas, better processes, and more results than I could ever get alone. Here’s what you’ll take away from this episode:📅 Why the real reason to outsource isn’t cost—it’s time and ease of hiring👤 The simple “1-person start” rule that keeps outsourcing from blowing up in your face📈 How to scale from one VA to a fully integrated marketing team📝 Why SOPs can wait—and what to do instead when you start🌱 How Filipino VAs can improve your marketing with fresh perspectives you never saw coming🔄 The iterative process that makes your team better and more loyal over timeWhen you stop trying to be the marketing department and start acting like the CEO, everything changes. You’ll have more consistent marketing, better ideas coming in, and the freedom to focus on what actually moves your business forward.▶️ Hit play now—this could be the step that finally gets marketing off your plate. 💬 What’s the first marketing task you’d hand off if you could? Ever wonder why so many business owners hire in the Philippines—even when they’ve never been there? 🤔 Most people think “third world country” and picture instability, low skills, and chaos. But that’s not what I’ve seen over the last 18+ years of working with Filipinos. The truth is, the Philippines is nothing like what most outsiders assume. It’s an emerging economy with millions of educated, talented workers who want stable, long-term jobs. The government is backing outsourcing, the middle class is growing fast, and for entrepreneurs like you, it’s one of the easiest ways to build a real team without breaking the bank. Here’s what you’ll take away from this episode:📊 Why “third world” doesn’t describe the Philippines anymore — and what the country actually looks like today.🎓 How their school system builds serious talent (most workers you’ll meet have degrees).💵 The real numbers behind Filipino wages — and why those rates work for everyone.🌴 How outsourcing supports entire families who’d otherwise have to leave home just to find work.📈 Why all of this makes hiring here one of the easiest ways to grow your business fast. The Philippines isn’t just “cheap help.” It’s a country where you can find loyal, educated, long-term team members who make your business (and your life) way easier. You can Google “why hire from the Philippines” and get a bunch of random opinions. That’s not what this is.I’ve been outsourcing since 2005—back when there was nothing out there about outsourcing. No guides, no YouTube experts, no frameworks. Just trial and error.I’ve hired from India, Indonesia, Brazil, Mexico… you name it. And it’s not about cheap. Ever wonder why the whole world’s outsourcing to the Philippines now? There’s a reason. In 2010, everything changed—and the Philippines quietly became the global leader in business process outsourcing.I’ve hired over 50 full-time Filipino workers. You think living the 4-hour work week is just a dream? I used to think that too—until life forced me to figure it out fast.Back in 2007, my wife got a life-threatening diagnosis late in her pregnancy. I had two toddlers, a growing business, and zero margin for error. I couldn’t work. At all. And yet… the business kept going. Actually, it grew. That was the moment everything changed.I didn’t just try the 4-hour work week. I got thrown into it. And the reason it worked? Two Filipino VAs I had trained from the ground up. Not tools. Not some automation hack. Just real people I trusted. So how did I go from grinding 50+ hour weeks… to stepping away cold turkey—while my business didn’t just survive, but got stronger? In this episode, I break it all down:👉 Why hiring Filipino VAs was the only reason my business didn’t collapse👉 The mistake I made early on that almost kept me trapped in 60-hour weeks👉 How two quiet, “task-level” VAs turned out to be strategic thinkers (and lifesavers)I’ll also show you what happened after I realized I wasn’t going back—because once I saw what they could do, I started making different choices about how I built my business.By the end of this episode, you’ll know:🎯 How to stop treating VAs like assistants—and start training them like partners🎯 The mindset shift that made my business grow while I worked less🎯 Why lifestyle freedom is a choice you make before the business explodes▶️ Think your VAs can’t run your business? This model helps companies adapt to change without constant hiring or training cycles. The analysis at https://www.velvetech.com/blog/why-outsourcing-managed-it-services/ explains how outsourcing supports efficiency while keeping service quality consistent and predictable.
