Valencia Hicks-Harris,
Founder/Chief Executive Officer
“The classroom, with all its limitations, remains a location of possibility. In that field of possibility we have the opportunity to labor for freedom, to demand of ourselves and our comrades, an openness of mind and heart that allows us to face reality even as we collectively imagine ways to move beyond boundaries, to transgress. This is education as the practice of freedom.” ~ bell hooks
Harris seeks to diversify the teacher pipeline, push culturally sustaining pedagogy as standard teaching practices, increase the presence of students of color in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math), and create an equitable education for all students.

Caila Holley is an NC State graduate who holds a degree in geology and currently serves as a college advisor.
What happens when you’re great at science and math and all the things that go into STEM, but what happens when the wonder and amazement aren’t there, and it’s just not filling your bucket?
As adults and for some of us as parents, we ask kids all the time, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” You know, we’re just curious about what the kid is interested in, but just that question alone starts a kids’ mindset that their life is defined by their occupation. Maybe we should simply ask them what sparks their curiosity?
Listen to Caila's story.
