In this episode, I break down the difference between high-quality and low-quality relaxation — and why it matters if you want to feel truly restored instead of just numbed out. We’ve been taught to equate “relaxation” with wine at the end of the day or collapsing on the couch with a drink in hand. But that kind of low-quality relaxation only gives temporary relief — it disconnects you from your body and leaves you feeling drained or disappointed later.I explore what high-quality relaxation really looks like: practices that fill you up, calm your nervous system, and actually help you recover from the day — things like slowing down, breathing, walking outside, or simply allowing yourself to be present. You’ll learn how to: Recognize the difference between numbing out and genuine restoration Tune into what your body actually needs to relax Replace automatic end-of-day drinking rituals with higher-quality habits Build a more nourishing relationship with downtime and rest  By the end, you’ll see that you don’t need alcohol to unwind — you just need to redefine what “relaxing” means and take the time you need to get there. Who has found themselves drinking as a 'reward?' Reward for a long productive day. Reward for 'dealing with the in-laws.' Reward for being a parent to teenagers. Reward for 'being good' and going without drinking for a few days. The reward lists can be long. If you have found yourself 'reward drinking' this episode is for you! You might have even said 'I couldn't find an alternative reward that sounded more appealing...' And we talk about WHY you are seeking a reward and how nothing is going to give you the same hit as alcohol will in that moment. It's about how to be with whatever is happening with your emotional state at that time instead of 'rewarding' yourself. Why do you need a reward? Tune in and find out! Also, I'm hosting a Sober October class next week, it's free, come check it out www.angelamascenik.com/soberoctober AND Alive AF! is open for enrollment with a waived enrollment fee now through October 1st! Not drinking feels simple when you don’t even want a drink. But what about those moments when the cravings and hard urges show up — after a stressful day, when you’re out with friends, or when your brain insists that a glass of wine will make everything easier? That’s when the real work begins. In this episode, I’ll show you why urges aren’t a sign of failure — they’re actually the training ground where you build confidence and self-trust. You’ll learn how to pause, ride out the discomfort, and practice tools that make saying “no” possible even when it feels hard. If you’ve ever wondered why it feels so different on “easy days” versus “craving days,” this episode will give you a fresh perspective and practical strategies you can use right away. And I share my new favorite mantra, and you DON'T want to miss it. Also, make sure you are on my email list to be the first to sign up for the Sober October Challenge inside the Alive AF! coaching membership, enrollment will be open September 17th through October 1st and it won't be open again this year. Please enjoy this REWIND- This week’s episode talks about the creeping effect of drinking alcohol. Have you recognized: 1) Your drinking has increased over time in how many days a week you drink or how many drinks you have each time you drink? 2) When you try and cut back and then you are ‘loose’ with your rules around alcohol, you notice it creeping back in to your old habits? Tune in and hear how I describe this phenomenon. Alcohol is invasive it’s like a weed with a strong root that takes hold, and sometimes we need to do more than we think to get our drinking under control.   If you’ve ever said yes when you really wanted to say no—whether it’s to a drink, an invitation, or keeping alcohol in the house for guests—you’re not alone. Women who over-drink often over-do in every area of life. We people-please, over-commit, and ignore our own needs to avoid disappointing others. But here’s the truth: every dishonest yes chips away at your self-trust and keeps you stuck in the cycle of over-drinking. In this episode, I’ll show you why trusting yourself with your yes and no is the foundation for real freedom. You’ll learn how to spot the difference between a clean yes and a guilt-driven one, why honesty in your relationships is essential for change, and how practicing small nos can help you build confidence and self-trust. This is the episode to listen to if you’re ready to stop people-pleasing, start trusting yourself, and create relationships built on honesty—not obligation. Welcome back to the podcast! I've returned from a wonderful long break and I'm so excited to be back! Have you ever imagined how amazing something would feel—only to be surprised when the actual moment didn’t match your expectations? In this episode, I’m diving into that emotional mismatch and why our brains often get it wrong. You’ll learn why making decisions based on how you think you’ll feel in the future doesn’t work, and how to instead anchor your choices in the outcomes you actually want. Whether it’s with drinking, social events, or everyday life, knowing that thoughts and emotions change is so important. Tune in and hear some personal stories of my own feelings not matching what I thought I would feel! Please enjoy this Summertime Rewind- This episode is a must listen for everyone! It's normal to feel like giving up and throwing in the towel, it's a very human feeling. In this episode I discuss WHY we sometimes feel like giving up and how to recognize if you are in that place. Such as: Burnout and Overwhelm: When effort outweighs perceived results. Self-Doubt: Believing you're not capable of success. Lack of Immediate Results: The discomfort of delayed gratification. Comparison Trap: Feeling behind because of others’ progress. I explain how to shift your perspective and mindset. I also cover how to process this feeling and tips to focus on small action items you can take to keep moving forward. Also, when you are in this place its really important to ask for help, get support, talk to a trusted friend or join a group. I'd love to hear how you used this podcast episode to help you instead of throwing in the towel! Please enjoy this Summertime Rewind- When did we become a society that became scared of negative recourse when sharing personal beliefs, values, and decisions? I had this question burning in my mind because of how divisive we can be at times, especially now, in our current political climate. In this week's episode I dive into how to expand our emotional capacity for discomfort, especially when we are presented with opposing views and beliefs. Being divisive doesn't work. Black and white thinking doesn't work. And getting angry or hateful at other people when they don't share the same beliefs at us doesn't work.. So, what works? Empathy, understanding, and expanding our own ability to be with our uncomfortable feelings when we see other people thinking and doing differently than us. It improves YOUR quality of life. It makes things more peaceful. It helps bring people together. We can solve problems better, drink less alcohol and be happier on our lives. Who doesn't want that? Please enjoy this Summertime Rewind- It's hard to say no to other people sometimes, right? And WHY is that the case, especially for women? Well.. maybe it's because if you stood up and said NO you got in trouble when you were a kid. Maybe.. you have been told by family, society, work, -that you shouldn't be too loud, talk back, disagree... And if you have a hard time saying NO I want you to know that you can learn how. But it takes some awareness of how you might be holding back. This week's podcast I describe how I've held myself back and having a lack of boundaries because pleasing other people came before pleasing myself. And when you do that you often feel discouraged, frustrated, and are hard on yourself for not saying what you actually wanted to and then at the end of the day you DRINK. Learning how to say NO AND speaking your truth and having boundaries for yourself is an art and it takes practice and awareness and the willingness to feel uncomfortable on purpose. But listen, friends, when you do... your mind and your energy will crack so wide open you will feel unstoppable, like you actually do get to choose what you want to do, and then you will DO IT. AND THEN YOU WON'T NEED TO DRINK AT THE END OF THE DAY TO SHUT OFF. And then you will start living the life you want to live on your terms. And you will ask yourself what you want first. And it's a magical, fun, happy place to be in. Tune in and learn more!   Tags:Stop Over-drinking, Angela Mascenik, stop drinking podcast, how to feel, how to overcome addiction, how to drink less wine, change your relationship with alcohol, coach for women who want to drink less alcohol, help to stop over-drinking, stop over-drinking, life coach to help stop over-drinking, self-love, importance of self-love, online membership to stop over-drinking, program to help quit alcohol, how to quit drinking, spouses, partners, food, overeating, moderation, sober retreat, how to prioritize yourself, make yourself a priority to drink less, mental health, mental health and alcohol use, mental health awareness month, how to stop over-drinking, how to stop drinking so much wine, life coach for women who drink too much, use humor to drink less, drink less, where do I start, sober retreat, how to stop over-drinking, how to drink less alcohol, Am I an alcoholic?, why do I drink so much, how to feel your feelings, how to stop the cycle of drinking too much, coaching for women who want to drink less, life coach for drinking less alcohol, stop over-drinking and start living, work with me privately, The Pivot, hard to say no, saying no
Please enjoy this Summertime Rewind- Oh boy.. parenting!!! Parenting is no f'ng joke. It's the hardest thing I have ever done, even harder than stopping over-drinking. It's relentless, exhausting, overwhelming, and filled with guilt. You are constantly judging yourself and worried about your kids' future. And then you get these tiny little nuggets of good times, and it will fill you for awhile, and then when you feel like you can't possibly go on and keep doing it anymore, you get another little nugget. Can you relate? Tune in and hear how I'm managing being a parent to tweens and teens right now and how getting support and taking care of yourself is the utmost importance. Please enjoy this Summertime Rewind- Tune in this week and hear me explain why just doing Dry July or saying you won't drink during the week doesn't create permanent change with your relationship to alcohol. Understanding WHY you are over-drinking is critical to changing how much you drink. And if you skip this part you will find that all the little breaks and challenges you do will be temporary at best. Please enjoy this Summertime Rewind- This episode dives in the problem of people in our lives who might say unsupportive comments about you cutting back or quitting alcohol. I explain WHY they might do this and how to navigate it if the person who is the offender is important to you. I also discuss our culture and the social pressure we experience when we are actively trying to change things. These things can be scary and make us not want to share and tell the truth about our drinking. But remember, this discomfort is temporary and you can get to a place where you aren't bothered by our heavy drinking society and other peoples thoughts and comments. Down the road, you will have established stronger boundaries, you will say no to doing things or being around people who don't feel supportive, you will move past this and have the true freedom you seek. We all want that deep sigh of relief at the end of the day — to shift from stress to stillness, from doing to being. For many of us, alcohol has been the go-to shortcut to get there fast. But what if real relaxation doesn’t come from a drink... but from a warm-up? In this episode, I break down the neuroscience behind why alcohol only mimics relaxation, and how it actually disrupts your nervous system’s natural ability to wind down. Then, I introduce a powerful mindset shift: what if relaxing at the end of the day is more like warming up before a workout or waking up in the morning — something we ease into, not snap into? You’ll learn how to create a gentle, sustainable “relaxation warm-up” routine that supports your nervous system, helps you release the tension of the day, and feels even better than that glass of wine ever did.   Tags:Stop Over-drinking, Angela Mascenik, stop drinking podcast, how to feel, how to overcome addiction, how to drink less wine, change your relationship with alcohol, coach for women who want to drink less alcohol, help to stop over-drinking, stop over-drinking, life coach to help stop over-drinking, self-love, importance of self-love, online membership to stop over-drinking, program to help quit alcohol, how to quit drinking, spouses, partners, food, overeating, moderation, sober retreat, how to prioritize yourself, make yourself a priority to drink less, mental health, mental health and alcohol use, mental health awareness month, how to stop over-drinking, how to stop drinking so much wine, life coach for women who drink too much, use humor to drink less, drink less, where do I start, sober retreat, how to stop over-drinking, how to drink less alcohol, Am I an alcoholic?, why do I drink so much, how to feel your feelings, how to stop the cycle of drinking too much, coaching for women who want to drink less, life coach for drinking less alcohol, stop over-drinking and start living, work with me privately, The Pivot, stop breaking promises to yourself, trusting yourself, have your own back, summertime, Las Vegas, summertime drinking

I received a great question last week around the fears we have when we think about changing our drinking. Here it is: The biggest fear I have about not drinking is a potential loss of emotional connection with other people. My husband and I have a routine of drinking together, having one of our great, deep conversations. And with other people - I love to connect deeply with people and put them at their ease - and so many people use mutual drinking to do that! I met a friend of mine who’s going through a hard time. I didn’t drink, so she didn’t drink, but it felt like neither of us could quite relax and enjoy ourselves. And with new friends - so often people use mutual drinking with me to let their guards down and get to know each other. I know this is all just an unfortunate part of the drinking culture, but this, I feel, is the biggest barrier to me not socially drinking: the loss of apparent mutual intimacy. This is such a great question. This podcast episode addresses this common fear, how alcohol actually doesn't help build true intimacy, and some ideas on how to start building intimacy without drinking. You are in for a very special treat on the podcast this week! Dorrie was delighted to come on and share her journey in stoping over-drinking and is truly LIVING!  Dorrie shares what was happening with her when she finally decided she needed help (clue: It wasn't about the alcohol.. it was about what was happening with a family member and how she was using alcohol to cope with the pain from it).  She shares what worked for her and of course, where she is now with drinking, which is barely having any and has had many long stretches without it.  Dorrie is an example of what is possible when you don't quit and invest in yourself to do whatever it takes to figure it out!  Thank you for your transparency Dorrie and for saying YES to you!! Over-drinking is saddled with broken promises we make to ourselves; they go together like salt and pepper. From saying you won't drink tonight, to not drinking during the workweek, or I'll just have one, how often are you breaking those promises? This is common, and you are not unusual. And the good news, there is nothing wrong with you, and it's not some inherent personality trait. It's just a muscle that needs strengthening. The muscle of following through on what you said you would do, especially around drinking. But we can't expect the end result of consistently following through without starting small and building those muscles. This episode breaks it down for you and what to work on now that will build to following through around the alcohol. You can still sign up for The Pivot through June 15th https://www.angelamascenik.com/thepivotand catch the program on replay. And check out how you can join my high touch coaching program now and get easy access to work on things and build those muscles through the summer so you are ready to go deeper September 1st, https://www.angelamascenik.com/joinsodsl   Tags:Stop Over-drinking, Angela Mascenik, stop drinking podcast, how to feel, how to overcome addiction, how to drink less wine, change your relationship with alcohol, coach for women who want to drink less alcohol, help to stop over-drinking, stop over-drinking, life coach to help stop over-drinking, self-love, importance of self-love, online membership to stop over-drinking, program to help quit alcohol, how to quit drinking, spouses, partners, food, overeating, moderation, sober retreat, how to prioritize yourself, make yourself a priority to drink less, mental health, mental health and alcohol use, mental health awareness month, how to stop over-drinking, how to stop drinking so much wine, life coach for women who drink too much, use humor to drink less, drink less, where do I start, sober retreat, how to stop over-drinking, how to drink less alcohol, Am I an alcoholic?, why do I drink so much, how to feel your feelings, how to stop the cycle of drinking too much, coaching for women who want to drink less, life coach for drinking less alcohol, stop over-drinking and start living, work with me privately, The Pivot, stop breaking promises to yourself, trusting yourself, have your own back
