In a Rabbit Hole

In a Rabbit Hole

2024-06-2401:28:53

After a few weeks off from recording, I missed it and had a bunch of thoughts in my head. So I decided to throw together a fun little bonus summer episode, and as it turned out I also had some very cool new bottles to taste. So, this week, while tasting these bottles, I'm talking about some books, movies and music that are reminding and educating me about our history. It's been a fascinating, educational, and entertaining Rabbit Hole for sure. If you like what I am doing here go to the podcast page and click the follow button. Breaking up with Bourbon

Breaking up with Bourbon

2024-05-2801:26:03

On the final episode before I break for the summer and to re format the podcast, I am sharing the story of my breakup from Bourbon. I am also tasting a couple Bourbons that remind me of simpler times in my Bourbon relationship. Portland,Maine in 6 Bottles

Portland,Maine in 6 Bottles

Recently I spent a weekend in Portland, Maine , a place I had never been. I was determined to disconnect and be present to fully immerse myself in the culture of Portland. I was also determined to find some interesting bottles to bring back that were not Bourbon. On this episode I am sharing my thoughts on those experiences. It is an interesting time in the spirits industry, in a post covid world. There are articles coming out all the time offering perspectives from suppliers and wholesalers, but nothing from the people on the ground level in retail stores. That is what I am talking about this week, all while tasting some good Tequila. This may be one my favorite episodes that I have done. Sneakers and Whiskey

Sneakers and Whiskey

2024-04-2201:30:25

This week I was inspired by a discussion I heard comparing sneaker collectors (sneakerheads) to bourbon buyers. Also, I got away to New Hampshire this weekend, which means a trip to the New Hampshire Liquor, which led to a couple of great purchases, and a rabbit hole dive into a Willy Wonka-esque distillery. Psychology

Psychology

2024-04-1056:38

After recording last week's episode I realized that I never got to the point of what started the rant originally, so this week I am following up on that and explaining what set me off. Also I am tasting the new A. Overholt from Jim Beam, a return to the roots of the Overholt brand. I'm also tasting it side by side with the standard Old Overholt. I'm also tasting my latest delivery from Seelbachs, the Blue Note Crossroads. If you like what I am doing here go to the podcast page and click the follow button and give it a rating. Marketing

Marketing

Happy Easter. This week I happened to listen to a podcast that Fred is part of, and the topic was psychology and marketing, and some of what I heard I just could not let go. So as I discuss some of the nonsense, I decided to take the opportunity to taste some special limited edition bottlings. This week I am talking about things that are changing, whether it's the Bourbon industry, Reggae music, brands names, or my personal life, things are constantly evolving and changing. I am also tasting some fantastic Rums. The Window is Closing

The Window is Closing

2024-03-1801:29:37

On this episode I am talking about the flood of new products that are starting to smother the spirits industry, and the negative effect that they are potentially going to have. But first, I actually get a little political. If you like what I am doing here go to the podcast page and click the follow button and give it a rating. St Patrick's Day

St Patrick's Day

2024-03-1301:25:26

I apologize for the late episode this week. On this week's episode I am stuck between my 2 least favorite days to be a bartender, St Patrick's Day and the St Patrick's Day Parade. But it does give me a reason to taste some really Irish Whiskies, so I guess it can't be all that bad. Fred Again

Fred Again

2024-03-0501:28:36

I didn't want to do this again, but I couldn't resist. Fred posted another video of his thoughts on the current state of Bourbon, and I couldn't resist the opportunity to break it down. I'm also tasting a new favorite, an old favorite, and another disappointing offering. In the end, it's all a good time. Words

Words

2024-02-2601:27:33

On this episode I am tasting some interesting whiskies that have been shipped to me, and one that is newly available in Massachusetts. I'm also talking a bit more about the Bourbon glut, as well as some of the words that we use to make Bourbon seem more important than it is. On this episode I am tasting a variety of Whiskies, includinga couple that I got delivered to me from Seelbachs. The fact that Seelbachs is now deliveringto Mass is going to be a gamechanger, albeit a costly one. I also go a little Charles Dickens talking about it being the best and worst of times in the spirit world. On this week's episode I am talking about some biographical movies and documentaries that I have recently watched, all while tasting through some interesting samples that you guys have been kind enough share with me. It's Gone Too Far

It's Gone Too Far

2024-02-0501:25:42

This week I had a whole episode all planned out, and then I saw a video on Instagram that got me so fired up that immediately went home, hit the record button, and let all my thoughts out. The self importance of some people in the Bourbon world has gone too far, and I couldn't let it go. This may be the most off the cuff episode I have done. A Disappointing Start

A Disappointing Start

2024-01-2901:29:48

Welcome to 2024 and welcome back to the podcast. My plan for the return of the podcast was to focus on more music, movies, books and other cultural things. But a few things happened in the borderland between the end of last year and the start of this one that I just had to get out. These include 3 disappointing Whiskies to start the year off with. But it's not all bad. On this episode I taste some alcoholic and some non alcoholic stuff and share some thoughts on the industry. Overall it's a good feeling to be back. 2023 Wrap Up

2023 Wrap Up

2023-12-1901:19:43

This is the last episode of 2023 and I am taking some time to reflect on an amazing year. I did this one with no breaks, no notes, and no plan. I ended up tasting some of the whiskies that I enjoyed this year, and name my whiskey of the year. The end of the year is quickly approaching, and that means it is time to reflect on the past year, and put together Best Of Lists. On this episode I am breaking down this year's Whiskey Advocates Top 20 Whiskies of 2023, and I definitely have a few issues with it. As we roll in to December, it becomes time to reflect on the past year, and put together ratings. On this episode I am talking about 5 of my favorite biographies that I have read this year, while drinking whiskey from a new distillery that I discovered this year, ASW out of Atlanta. On this episode I am talking about the season, some of the cultural things I did this week, and the future of this podcast. I'm also tasting one of the most disappointing whiskies of the year, as well as one of the best.
