And that's exactly what I had, when Max Holloway did THAT at UFC 300! As per the title of this episode, Ilia Topuria showed that his run to a championship fight was no fluke and he really was as well put-together as he looked, overcoming a typically tricky Alexander Volkanovski to smash him into oblivion in the second round. As the new champion will Topuria spark the interest of fans by taking on all-comers, or will he chase uninteresting 'super' fights against the likes of Conor McGregor? I look into the fight that everyone is talking about right now as well as what the future may hold for both Topuria and the now dethroned Volkanovski, and if you want to hear my thoughts about the rest of UFC 298 please head on over to the Combat Chronicles Patreon! Dricus du Plessis is the NEW UFC middleweight champion after a hard-fought split-decision win over Sean Strickland, and this episode will bring you all my thoughts on that fight. To say I was excited about former UFC middleweight champ Alex Pereira facing off with former UFC light-heavyweight champ Jiri Prochazka would be an understatement, I was certain it wouldn't disappoint. And now that the shoot-out has taken place, I'm happy to say that it didn't, bar one thing that I'm sure anyone that has seen it will already have an opinion on! Well, in this episode you'll get to hear all of my opinions on the fight, from my takes on the technical details, to my thoughts on the division overall and the current standing of both men and what we might see from them in the future. To hear more of my thoughts on UFC 295 (including the big heavyweight clash between Tom Aspinall and Sergei Pavlovich) head on over to the Combat Chronicles Patreon where the full one-hour episode is available right now! It seems that we all got the news we were hoping for this past week when Tyson Fury versus. Oleksandr Usyk for ALL the marbles of heavyweight boxing was apparently signed and sealed. But what needs to happen before it gets delivered? My thoughts on how much we can take from this apparent GREAT news in this episode, and if you want to hear my thoughts about everything else that happened in boxing this past weekend (including the mega-fight between Canelo and Charlo!) head on over to the Combat Chronicles Patreon! After a shaky fight week and a late-notice catch-weight agreement, we finally got to see Rodtang and Superlek face off in a ONE Championship ring and the fight absolutely delivered! A gore-fest with plenty of excitement, a knockdown, and a variety of superb technique on display, Superlek prevailed by decision, turning away the challenge of the iron-chinned fan favourite Rodtang. But some fans cried robbery after the fight, and some fans seem to think that despite Rodtang's best efforts he was barely in the fight at all. Are either true, or is the truth somewhere in the middle? On this episode, I look to find out!As always if you like this episode and want more content like it please do check out the Combat Chronicles Patreon! Don't call it a comeback because...well, I've been dropping episodes with regularity on the Patreon! So head on over there if you need a more regular fix of the podcast. In episode 55 on this feed, I look at just why Israel Adesanya couldn't figure out what to do with Sean Strickland. Naoya Inoue showed again why he's nicknamed 'Monster' with a dominant and destructive performance against two-belt super-bantamweight champ Stephen Fulton. But just how impressive was it and what resistance could Fulton really hope to offer? Two fighters who will likely prove much sterner rivals battle it out for all the marbles at welterweight this coming weekend, as two undefeated Americans lay it all on the line for divisional supremacy! A fight years in the making deserves a top-notch guest to talk through it with me, and I got Boxing News head honcho Rob Tebbutt in to talk all things Spence-Crawford. If you liked this episode and want to hear more like it--including an exclusive post-fight breakdown of Spence versus Crawford--head on over to the Combat Chronicles Patreon! The pro debut of amateur boxing legend Andy Cruz of Cuba finally took place and he looked predictably terrific. In this episode, I'll mainly be looking at the pros and cons of his style (no shock to say there's more of the former than the latter!) and then looking at UFC welterweight banger Jack Della Maddalena's latest fight and why I'm not pushing the panic button just yet. Also: K-1 comeback? Fury-Ngannou?! ARE THE SAUDIS TAKING OVER HEAVYWEIGHT BOXING?!? Just give it a listen and tell your friends, you know the drill. The title should be self-explanatory, as this episode is entirely a tribute to the great 'Ruthless' Robbie Lawler who went out as he came in, smashing some poor soul into the realm of unconsciousness. Hear me wax lyrical about what Robbie means to me as I try to encapsulate what made him so darn great and easy to root for.If you want to hear my thoughts on the rest of the bloody good UFC 290 card head on over to the Combat Chronicles Patreon where you can also gain access to the brand-new 1-hour audio documentary 'How to Catch a Spider' which looks back at the first fight between Chris Weidman and Anderson Silva as it celebrates its tenth anniversary. Even though I covered a little bit of the MTGP card this weekend that had combat sports twitter buzzing, I could not pass up the opportunity to put the record straight with fighter, coach, and fellow podcaster 'Baba', who was present for the whole thing.Topics include: What the 'eff was going on?! The fights (including the shocker that saw up-and-coming French fighter Alexis Sautron knock out the well-known visiting fighter Taiju) and just how vicious Takeru's body shots sound from ringside. Where Takeru ranks among the best that Baba has seen up-close-and-personal. And the final section, that looks at all things ONE Championship, including whether we think the must-see bout between Takeru and Rodtang will happen, as well as what could potentially happen if Rodtang tries to steer away from it. Special thanks to my guest and more importantly friend Baba who I'm sure you will agree is a wealth of knowledge and very reliable in terms of the details. On this weeks edition of Combat Chronicles we're having breakfast in France with the triumphant return of kickboxing star Takeru on a card that will unfortunately be remembered for how much of a shit show it was rather than the talent involved. And then we're flying over to Florida for supper as Ilia Topuria force fed his fist down Josh Emmett's throat for much of their five-round fight. Lawrence Okolie did his best to spoil Chris Billam-Smith's big homecoming, but the Bournemouth man prevailed in a fight that was as bizarre as one of its scorecards.Talking of bizarre, the big rematch between Mauricio Lara and Leigh Wood brought surprises before the first bell had even rung, and the fight itself played out in a different fashion than many expected! If you want your title fights straight as a pear cider made from 100% pears, then Luis Alberto Lopez vs. Michael Conlan is the one for you! An absolute brawl from start to finish featuring a highlight-reel knockout! I look at what went wrong for Conlan and go into why Lopez is such a fun fighter to watch. UFC 289 is in the books and surely Kamaru Usman's time at the upper echelons of MMA is as well? In this episode I look at how Leon answered questions I've had on him FOR YEARS and also take a look at Usman's career from pre-to-post title, injury concerns and the fact he might well have aged out and also lost some of what made him so great in the first place. Not to detract from 'Rocky' Edwards though, who has now cemented himself without a shadow of a doubt as the premier 170lber worldwide. Plenty more to talk of on the card including the potentially dodgy decision in the absolutely terrific Gaethje-Fiziev fight, but also Marvin Vettori being uninteresting (and Roman Dolidze being unequipped to deal with that) and the a potential clash between rising British stars being scuppered by the hubris of one of the combatants.
