So you ditched dieting, stopped tracking and decided to start doing intuitive eating, and therefore you gave yourself permission to eat whatever you want. And now it feels a bit chaotic, unstructured, and you find yourself wondering, "Am I doing this right?" as you watch the number on the scale go up, and your labs get worse. You might think you're doing intuitive eating, but if you're feeling frustrated, uncertain or stuck…there's a good chance that you're not actually doing it the way it's meant to be done. No shame in that, this is really common. In this episode, I'm going to walk you through 5 signs that tell us you're not doing intuitive eating correctly or in its entirety, and what you need to do differently to make it work for you. If you're curious about intuitive eating but still secretly hoping it leads to weight loss, this episode is for you. Let me be clear: Wanting to lose weight does not disqualify you from intuitive eating. At the same time, trying to use intuitive eating as a weight loss strategy will sabotage the entire process. Eating disorders aren't always obvious, and they are often overlooked in the intuitive eating space. I've seen way too many people feel frustrated that they're not making progress with intuitive eating - and blame themselves - when the real issue was that there was an underlying eating disorder preventing them from making progress. How many times have you been told that being healthy means being at a certain weight or BMI? The reality is that weight and BMI tell us very little about your health. A much better way to know how healthy your body is are your labs. Whenever I'm working with a client who has health concerns, the first thing we do is gather some data by looking at what their specific health concerns are, and their bloodwork that would give us clues as to how their health is looking. Your weight tells us one thing: Your gravitational pull. Your labs tell us many things: How well your organs are doing their jobs, how well your body is regulating its blood sugar, your risk of certain things like cardiovascular events, if you are sick with an infection, if you have systemic inflammation, whether or not you have certain diseases, and so much more. In this episode, I'm walking you through the labs that I look at and recommend most frequently as a dietitian. These are the labs that tell us what to focus on when it comes to gentle nutrition strategies, and it's a way of listening to what your body is communicating (which is absolutely part of intuitive eating). *DISCLAIMER: I'm obviously not a doctor, and you should ask your doctor about all of this and work with them to understand what lab tests are most appropriate for you and your unique health needs. A member of my community shared that she's enjoying her new found food freedom with baking this holiday season - and her boyfriend isn't thrilled. He's still dieting, and she's worried about sabotaging him. Can you relate?
