Matt  Zerker said that all modern men have these three characteristics: 1)  They are open about their struggles, 2) they are comfortable with  emotional intimacy, and, 3) they take care of themselves. All three of  my guest exudes these qualities. On today’s show, we examined my first  book “It’s Not a Man’s World” and discussed some of the chapters (i.e.  Surrender, Purpose, Success is self-defined). A group of men being open  about their challenges and life experiences is a rare occurrence. This  episode was one of the most powerful discussions I have been a part of.  K Join  me this Wednesday as I sit down with Andy Misick, Demond Lightbourne  and Sirano Hunt as we dive into my book “It’s Not a Man’s World” and  have a open discussion about manhood. The Hope  Foundation for Autism Awareness (TCI) Inc. began in April of 2013 to  provide awareness to the community, support to parents and teachers and  HOPE to all of the families and children affected by autism in the Turks and Caicos Islands.  The foundation is a Non-Profit Organization that provides free workshops  three times a year to parents, teachers and to the community with over  20 families that have children affected by Autism. CD  researchers reported that autism rates in the United States increased  from 1 in 150 children in 2000 to 1 in 54 in 2016, and the rate now  stands at 1 in 44 children. Some argue that autism's prevalence is  rising because of environmental causes like vaccines. On this episode Almando Rigby discussed his activism for Autism and also his experience parenting his 13 year old son Isreal who was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder 10 years ago. Mr. Rigby is a family guy who loves his community dearly. It was a pleasure learning about his experiences in raising awareness about Autism here in the  Turks and Caicos Islands.
Gabriel Saunders, the son of Deputy Premier Hon. Erwin Jay Saunders, Founder of Decomp, and Social Entrepreneur shared on the season finale of Bourne to Lead  that pursuing social entrepreneurship is the way forward to creating  more affluence for Turks and Caicos Islanders. Many are saying "we are Not living our best life" in the Turks and Caicos Islands and Gabriel  believes a solution to this is creating business incubators for aspiring entrepreneurs to develop their business ideas and grow them into lucrative globally recognized companies. Gabriel also shared his journey with Decomp and the company being a better solution to plastic waste pollution. Decomp has received some international awards since its founding and recently was selected as the winner of the Commission for Environmental  Cooperation's Youth Innovation Challenge, representing Canada. The company was awarded $15,000 in non-dilutive seed funding. During the interview, Mr. Saunders advocated for the expansion of the MSME program as it is needed for locals to nurture their creative ideas. Mr. Saunders also shared his views on Climate Change, and the advice Honorable Norman Saunders gave him as a child. L.T. Demond Lightbourne knew nothing about the hospitality industry when he graduated high school but your calling does not require you to have it all figured out. Demond's open and empathic personality allowed him to connect instantly to guests in the hotel industry and seeing them happy ignited his passion for service. Demond has worked at most levels in the hotel industry from line staff to middle management. In 2017, he became the first individual in the Caribbean to join the elite concierge society called "The Golden Keys" based in the United Kingdom. Having 10+ years of customer service experience, Demond is now the owner of a concierge company called Island Buzz Concierge. Speaking with Mr. Lightbourne, I couldn't help but feel like this is the beginning of his journey. A true ambassador of the Turks and Caicos Islands hospitality industry, Demond is poised for greatness as an Entrepreneur.  Listen to this insightful discussion we had on Bourne to Lead today about his career and goals. I could not have chosen a better guest for this week’s show. Greg poured his heart over the airwaves so much so that it has prompted me to do some introspection of my own. Greg Been, formerly known as Techno Sounds talked about his experience being the most requested DJ of his era and shared some tips other up-and-coming DJs could use to get some exposure. When asked about his biggest failure during his DJing career he responded "My greatest failure, was my success ". Mr. Been shared that his success ruined his relationship with his family which led to him seeking therapeutic intervention in the end. We rarely see men expose themselves the way Mr. Been did today; it was a powerful experience. No longer a DJ, Mr. Been serves his church and community, mentoring at-risk males amongst other  ventures. Mr. Been ended the show by saying that we should make “God our centerpiece” to avoid some of the mistakes he made. L.T. Hon. Marcus Garvey said “We are going to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery because whilst others might free the body, none but ourselves can free the mind. Mind is your only ruler, sovereign. The man who is not able to develop and use his mind is bound to be the slave of the other man who uses his mind.” On this episode, I was grace with the presence of the Pan-Africanist and Wellbeing & Mental Health Practitioner, Tinashe Masango, who spoke about the  importance of addressing mental illness in Afro-Communities. In this  discussion we touched on the origins of our traumas, the importance of  priotizing mental health on the road to economic prosperity amongst  other pressing topics surrounding mental health. You will need you  notepad for this one; Mr. Masango shared a lot of helpful information during the discussion. L.T. Honorable Edwin Astwood is the nephew of  the founders of the People's Democratic Movement. I had the privilege of interviewing Hon. Astwood for the first time since the general elections were held on February 19th, 2021. I was blown away by the four leaders he draws inspiration from; Hon. JAGS McCartney, Minister Louis  Farrakhan, Muammar al-Gaddafi, and Fidel Castro. What do all these leaders have in common? They were willing to die for the progress of their people. Honorable Astwood sounded like he was channeling his uncles at times during the discussion. During the interview Hon. Astwood  touched on the following areas: The Vision of the PDM His childhood experiences Why did his government lose the past elections? His support on amending the constitution Views on getting the vaccine The type of leadership style he favors The adjustment he had to make in this new government L.T. I've had the pleasure of speaking with some of the greatest leaders, thinkers and creatives of our generation. I have found similar patterns in all of their stories. One in particular is an early sign of their "soon to be" greatness; most of the greats begin to exhibit behavioral traits that aligns with their purpose at an early age. This is why I believe some of these individuals were Born to Lead. Wellington Williams is no different from these "Bourne to Lead" individuals; from an early age he demonstrated his desire to create jewelry and products, and today he owns a store with his brand on it in Grace Bay, Turks and Caicos Islands all before  the age of 30. I enjoyed listening to Wellington talk about his  journey into entrepreneurship. His story wasn't all sunshine and rainbows, Wellington had to overcome some obstacles as well, namely rejection from large hotels who wouldn't give his products a try. In this interview he also shared his thoughts on the controversial "wages high school graduates should be paid" comment he made. We also talked  about his experience being an Dominican-Turks Islander.  L.T. My mother always tells me "to put God  first in everything I do ", and I wanted to honor God in the season finale of Bourne to Lead. I've known Darron for years and I've always admired his walk with God but what I didn't know before this show was that his walk with God only begun this year. I can only describe the events that took on this episode as a "spiritual  phenomenon " Some will say that the "spirit of God", spoke through  Darron as he delivered a powerful message to our young men. Get your notepads ready, this is one episode you will want to rewind! L.T. Lockdown forced most of us to look at other ways of diversifying our incomes and the economy. The Film Industry is one of the largest industries in the world and in the Turks and Caicos Islands have not scratch the surface of the opportunities and benefits it can provide for its people. Son of the soil, Benson Williams recently returned home from the United Kingdom along with his Fiancé Georgia Grant-Anderson to take cinematography to the NEXT LEVEL. On this episode they shared their journeys into their careers, challenges of the industry, advantages it will bring to the social development of the people, and ways the audience can support  their mission. I can truly say both of them were “Bourne” to do this. L.T. Bourne is an Author, and Speaker from the Caribbean that writes about life as a man in a world dominated by men, raised by women. I have conducted a lot of interviews in my life and this one was special because spoke with someone who embodies the phrase “Trust The Process”. Although Mr. Adlin Pierre intentions were clear from the beginning; in wanting to be a success story. His  journey was not a “Forced” process, instead opportunities flowed to him and he followed the instructions that he was given. Each opportunity took him closer to his goal. He did not seek it, they found him. It is like Mr. Pierre has been walking blind all his life and listening to every instruction God gave him. I heard the phrase “Walking with God” numerous of times but to listen to it and see it first hand was a powerful experience. L.T. A country being steered requires a careful, innovative, thoughtful steady hand to lead its people through a  time-frame where many challenges faces its people on a daily basis! This leader must be ready everyday for what lies ahead, he must be  experienced & wise, and most of all, born to lead! On this episode, I sit across from the Premier of the Turks & Caicos, Hon. C.  Washington Misick to discuss his first few months as the new Premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Coming from a home of 12 siblings, he learned how to compete for the things he wanted. In his teenage years, he began to become influenced by the Former Prime Minister of Jamaica Michael Norman Manley, Former Chief Minister of the Turks and Caicos Islands Norman Saunders, and Civil Rights Activist Stokely Carmichael. He credits these gentlemen for shaping his political views. Hon. Misick revealed  that he uses an empathetic leadership style that gives him the ability to lead while understanding the experiences and needs of others. There has never been a leader from the Progressive National Party that served two full terms uninterrupted. Hon. Misick assured the audience that he will complete his term and hand the keys over to the next leader of the party in the end. He intends on leaving a lasting legacy as he is on the verge of another historical feat. I left the show wanting to hear more  from Hon. Misick, who is filled with wisdom and leadership experience. I  pray this is the first of many more live discussions to come between us. L.T. On this episode, Community Activist and Entrepreneur Jeffrey Nicolas, stopped by to share his experience in leading one of  the nation's largest clean up campaigns. Mr. Nicolas wears many hats, from being a Customer Service Specialist to owning and operating his own VIP transportation service in the Turks and Caicos Islands. I learned a lot about Jeffrey Nicolas. Although he was born into difficulty circumstances with the title of "Haitian Turks Islander" he overcame his environment and societal labels to lead one of largest clean up campaigns in the history of the Turks and Caicos Islands. He credited his mindset to the Cumminings Family who showed him what love  looked like, the books he reads specifically Myles Munroe books and his mentors namely Devon Cox, Darron Hillaire, and a lot more.
