This is the history part of our Redline episode and today I'm joined by an actual expert guest- author and longtime Japanese culture journalist Roland Kelts. Roland is the author of the very good book Japanamerica: How Japanese Pop Culture Has Invaded the U.S., as well as the upcoming (out in July!) The Art of Blade Runner: Black Lotus.  He's also an editor for the journal Monkey, which collects English translations of new Japanese writing, which is publishing a new volume this fall.Japanamerica profiles a lot of the Anime industry in the mid-2000s, while Redline was in production, and does a great job of breaking down the successes and issues in the industry. We talk about some of those today, as well as how (if) they've changed since. We also get into streaming's effect on the industry and the massive success of the Demon Slayer movie. Also we learn that Pete Townsend is a very good friend with a very good assistant. I am happy to befriend any rock legend that is listening (Rick Nielsen, I know you've subscribed).Much like Rick Nielsen, you can follow us:On Instagram (@nofuturenyc)On Twitter (@nofuturenyc)On Letterboxd (@nofuturenyc)Email us at:nofuturemailbag@gmail.com
It's the comedy part of our Redline episode with Natasha Li and Leah Ly.  We love improv. I can't stress that enough. We love it. And we like it when people make us do it. We also find out the hard way about space cocaine, pitch a much more emotional journey for racers in Redline 2, and find out a SHOCKING SECRET about Sweet J.P.Then we cash in our bitcoins and look into the benefits of a reverse mortgage, cause being the #1 otaku don't come for free. We play the game Weeb or Plebe where we see who can correctly guess how much different anime-based products cost. And OF COURSE you can play along at home. You can follow us:On Instagram (@nofuturenyc)On Twitter (@nofuturenyc)On Letterboxd (@nofuturenyc)Email us at:nofuturemailbag@gmail.com
A new film, and this time it's another 2009 classic- the Japanese sci-fi/Wacky Races fever dream anime film Redline. And by classic, I mean cult classic. I'm joined by Natasha Li and Leah Ly to break down our relationship with anime, pick out our favorite racers and die for JP. This movie rules. We like wholesome dummies on this podcast.  You can follow us:On Instagram (@nofuturenyc)On Twitter (@nofuturenyc)On Letterboxd (@nofuturenyc)Email us at:nofuturemailbag@gmail.com
Well, it finally happened. Kate Lindsay (The Atlantic) and Dylan Fugel (Sigh) have demanded their own segments. Dylan uses his on history's least problematic safari and Kate gives us a peek behind the SoHo yarn doors. We also talk the Met Gala, hilarious movie title conventions and of course, who are today's most famous celebrities that no one has any opinion of. It's actually a harder question than you think because so many of Hollywood's elite are famously bad people. But of course we manage to do it, because we're so smart and talented at our jobs. This is the history part of our The Secret in Their Eyes episode and I'm joined by Dustin Molina. In this one, we talk about two things- one of the architects of the Dirty War in the 1970s in Argentina and also what the director of The Secret in Their Eyes did after making his huge hit. He made the most expensive Argentine movie of all time. By like a lot. Well, I'm sure it's about something really important. He also made a sitcom about a professional womanizer- I love how weird Juan José Campanella  is.You can follow us:On Instagram (@nofuturenyc)On Twitter (@nofuturenyc)On Letterboxd (@nofuturenyc)Email us at:nofuturemailbag@gmail.com
It's the comedy part of our The Secret in Their Eyes episode with Andrea Cardenas and Dustin Molina.  We're the only girls in Boston (The Town), we have low grade Amelie Fever, and we are studying those Euphoria makeup tutorials. Then we fold our paper hats tight to protect us on the construction site, and play the game No More Secrets where we spoil the secrets of the following INCREDIBLY SECRETIVE MOVIES:National Treasure: Book of SecretsThe Secret of NIMHSecret ZooSorority SecretsThe Secret If you're like me, you absolute hate secrets and also play along at home. You can follow us:On Instagram (@nofuturenyc)On Twitter (@nofuturenyc)On Letterboxd (@nofuturenyc)Email us at:nofuturemailbag@gmail.com
Our first South American movie and it's a great one. In this episode, we're talking about the Argentine mystery/ thriller/ workplace romance film The Secret in Their Eyes with Andrea Cardenas and Dustin Molina. We hate law movies, learn to love Chile, and apparently we need to go rewatch Strangers with Candy ASAP. Juan Jose Campanella has a very surprising filmography. You can follow us:On Instagram (@nofuturenyc)On Twitter (@nofuturenyc)On Letterboxd (@nofuturenyc)Email us at:nofuturemailbag@gmail.com
It's another Intermission episode, where we take a break from watching movies and just chat. In this very good episode, we're joined by Kate Lindsay (The Atlantic) and also, sigh, Dylan Fugel. Dylan was recovering from COVID as we recorded this, which is why Hugh Bonneville made so much more sense to him this time. Speaking of Hugh, this episode we really ponder the question, "Why are people asking him these questions? Why would anyone care what Hugh Bonneville thinks?" We also talk about the very fun movie Spy, how websites like Refinery29 cover awards shows, and show off our cool posters in our cool dorms. It's the comedy part of our All Monsters Attack episode with Nick Milanes and Lani Harms. We spend all the important parts of this episode discussing the IMPORTANT character of the cowboy painter. Why did the cowboy lifestyle speak to him so much, besides holsterability in what ways is a paintbrush like a six shooter, and of course, will he be avenged? Then we tighten our detective's helmet and play the great game Win Ten Ten that does COINCIDENTALLY begin with a gif of Will Smith. What a lucky break for us. And, as always, you can get the real experience by playing along at home. This is the history part of our All Monsters Attack episode with Nick Milanes and Lani Harms (They Thought I Was You podcast). In this one, we're talking more about the life of director Ishiro Honda and we're tracing the evolution of the Kaiju film genre up through All Monsters Attack. Obviously the genre peaked with Hanna Barbera's classic 1978 cartoon Godzilla that introduced us to Godzooky, Godzilla's nephew. Here's a fun trivia fact about Godzooky from Gojipedia: "Many fans wonder if, since Godzilla is supposedly Godzooky's uncle, then Godzilla may have a brother and/or sister, although the show never says anything about him having one. It is more likely, however, that the term "nephew" is used figuratively, with no actual blood relation between the monsters."Wow. That's why you read all the way to the bottom of the episode description. You can follow us:On Instagram (@nofuturenyc)On Twitter (@nofuturenyc)On Letterboxd (@nofuturenyc)Email us at:nofuturemailbag@gmail.com
A new episode, a new movie. And in this episode, we're talking about the Japanese monster movie/parenting advice film All Monsters Attack (aka Godzilla's Revenge) with Lani Harms (They Thought I Was You podcast) and Nick Milanes. This might be a strange Godzilla movie but it dominated the Harms household and made them the people they are today. And we're all better for it. Thank you, TNT's Monstervision. Thank you.You can follow us:On Instagram (@nofuturenyc)On Twitter (@nofuturenyc)On Letterboxd (@nofuturenyc)Email us at:nofuturemailbag@gmail.com
It's another Intermission episode, where we take a break from watching movies and just chat. This is a very exciting episode we're joined by Kate Lindsay (The Atlantic) and also Dylan Fugel as we enter our Dakota era, consult our local saddler, and pick up another shift at the yarn store. We're also very proud to announce our new program: No Alibi. We will read an on-air alibi for any listener who gives the podcast a 5-star rating on Apple Podcasts, all you have to do is end the review with: (date, length of time, what you were NOT doing). Because you weren't doing that. Because you were with us. Email us at:nofuturemailbag@gmail.comYou can follow us:On Instagram (@nofuturenyc)On Twitter (@nofuturenyc)On Letterboxd (@nofuturenyc)
It's the comedy part of our Train to Busan episode with Nicole Adsit and Christina Song. We missed out on the remake rights to Train to Busan, so we put our Goofy costumes on, stuck our whole head and face into the candy mixture, and designed our own zombie movies. Plus we play a GOOD game about movie trains, a SUCCESSFUL game that people were wrong to doubt. And you can play along at home too! You can follow us:On Instagram (@nofuturenyc)On Twitter (@nofuturenyc)On Letterboxd (@nofuturenyc)Email us at:nofuturemailbag@gmail.com
It's the history part of our Train to Busan episode with Nicole Adsit and Christina Song. We follow the clues all the way to the political climate in Korea when Train to Busan was coming out. President Park Guen-hye's administration from 2013-2017 was riddled with scandals, corruption and incompetence, which helped inspired a whole wave of political thrillers in Korea and at least one zombie movie.Just as a heads up, we do talk about the Sewol ferry disaster, which is a genuinely heartbreaking tragedy, but we bounce back by covering how Park's closest advisor was the daughter of a cult leader who used her connections to Park to force companies to donate to her charities, which she was embezzling from. Man, there was a lot happening during Park's presidency. At least we know she'll be in jail for a long, long time- wait, what? She was pardoned "in the interest of national harmony" in December 2021 after we recorded the episode?? And I just learned this now when I googled what her release date was to make a joke about it??? It doesn't seem like her advisor Choi Soon-sil was pardoned- will someone please think of her equestrian daughter! You can follow us:On Instagram (@nofuturenyc)On Twitter (@nofuturenyc)On Letterboxd (@nofuturenyc)Email us at:nofuturemailbag@gmail.com
In this episode, we talk the 2016 zombie thriller Train to Busan with Nicole Adsit and Christina Song. We get in depth on how these zombies sprint, what would (will?) be different in the American remake, and who the REAL monster is.And as always, we swim with the fishes, we accept her love,  and we move the kill count bar much higher. It's our first Intermission episode, where we take a break from watching movies and just chat. This episode we're joined by Kate Lindsay and Dylan Fugel to talk about how to be a healthy movie person, why the MoMA is cancelled, and the worst movie I've ever picked out for a date. We want your feedback with any questions, comments and non-pedantic corrections. We also have an interMISSION for the listeners- watch a movie from a country you've never seen a movie from and let us know what you thought.Email us at:nofuturemailbag@gmail.comYou can follow us:On Instagram https://www.instagram.com/nofuturenyc/On Twitter https://twitter.com/nofuturenycOn Letterboxd https://letterboxd.com/NoFutureNYC/
This is the comedy part of our Wild Strawberries episode with Kate Lindsay and Dustin Molina. We remake the movie Rat Race, we read situations REALLY wrong, and we play the great game Dinner is the Movie. And you can play along at home with our contestants! You can follow us:On Instagram https://www.instagram.com/nofuturenyc/On Twitter https://twitter.com/nofuturenycOn Letterboxd https://letterboxd.com/NoFutureNYC/Email us at:nofuturemailbag@gmail.com
This is the history part of our Wild Strawberries episode with Kate Lindsay and Dustin Molina. We talk about the star of Wild Strawberries, Victor Sjöström. He was a leader of the Golden Age of Swedish Cinema and also never missed his 5pm whiskey. We also cover Dagen H, the LARGEST LOGISTICAL EVENT IN SWEDISH HISTORY. It happened on September 3, 1967 not New Year's Day like I might have said in the podcast- this was all a test to see if you guys read the podcast description. Good job- you passed! I love you so much more than those other morons who didn't scroll down this far.You can follow us:On Instagram https://www.instagram.com/nofuturenyc/On Twitter https://twitter.com/nofuturenycOn Letterboxd https://letterboxd.com/NoFutureNYC/Email us at:nofuturemailbag@gmail.com
In this episode, we talk about the 1957 Swedish existential road trip movie Wild Strawberries with Kate Lindsay and Dustin Molina. We go over exactly how smart and cultured we wanted to seem in college,  we're getting around to seeing Parasite, and we try to make sense of Ingmar Bergman's big year. We don't think there's any reason for people who are younger than 18 to listen to any of these episodes, so stop doing it. We don't know why our core demographic is 12-16 year olds, we have nothing in common with them and don't like them. All our stupid viral tiktoks are really coming back to haunt us....You can follow us:On Instagram https://www.instagram.com/nofuturenyc/On Twitter https://twitter.com/nofuturenycOn Letterboxd https://letterboxd.com/NoFutureNYC/Email us at:nofuturemailbag@gmail.com
It's the second part of our pilot episode, and like all great pilots, we've got a taste for bird murder. It's the comedy part of our Paddington Episode with Kate Lindsay and Dylan Fugel- Kate does some good improv, Dylan remembers there's already a Philly Paddington, and we all play a game of Years Mate!
