This is the history part of our Redline episode and today I'm joined by an actual expert guest- author and longtime Japanese culture journalist Roland Kelts. Roland is the author of the very good book Japanamerica: How Japanese Pop Culture Has Invaded the U.S., as well as the upcoming (out in July!) The Art of Blade Runner: Black Lotus.  He's also an editor for the journal Monkey, which collects English translations of new Japanese writing, which is publishing a new volume this fall.Japanamerica profiles a lot of the Anime industry in the mid-2000s, while Redline was in production, and does a great job of breaking down the successes and issues in the industry. We talk about some of those today, as well as how (if) they've changed since. We also get into streaming's effect on the industry and the massive success of the Demon Slayer movie. Also we learn that Pete Townsend is a very good friend with a very good assistant. This is the history part of our All Monsters Attack episode with Nick Milanes and Lani Harms (They Thought I Was You podcast). In this one, we're talking more about the life of director Ishiro Honda and we're tracing the evolution of the Kaiju film genre up through All Monsters Attack. Obviously the genre peaked with Hanna Barbera's classic 1978 cartoon Godzilla that introduced us to Godzooky, Godzilla's nephew. Here's a fun trivia fact about Godzooky from Gojipedia: "Many fans wonder if, since Godzilla is supposedly Godzooky's uncle, then Godzilla may have a brother and/or sister, although the show never says anything about him having one. It's the history part of our Train to Busan episode with Nicole Adsit and Christina Song. We follow the clues all the way to the political climate in Korea when Train to Busan was coming out. President Park Guen-hye's administration from 2013-2017 was riddled with scandals, corruption and incompetence, which helped inspired a whole wave of political thrillers in Korea and at least one zombie movie.Just as a heads up, we do talk about the Sewol ferry disaster, which is a genuinely heartbreaking tragedy, but we bounce back by covering how Park's closest advisor was the daughter of a cult leader who used her connections to Park to force companies to donate to her charities, which she was embezzling from. Man, there was a lot happening during Park's presidency. At least we know she'll be in jail for a long, long time- wait, what? She was pardoned "in the interest of national harmony" in December 2021 after we recorded the episode?? And I just learned this now when I googled what her release date was to make a joke about it???
