I finally got my first real opportunity at a buck with my recurve—and what happened after the arrow hit is a reminder that not every hunt ends the way we hope. Season 26 is officially underway, and in this episode I’m giving you a real-time update on my 2026 whitetail season. I break down the hunt from start to finish, my recurve setup, the 15-yard opportunity, the shot, and the five-plus-hour tracking job with Taylor and Mace that followed. I’m also talking early October deer movement, acorns hitting the ground, the water hole and scrape setup that brought this buck in, and a new 10-point that recently showed up on camera. Early October can be one of the most overlooked opportunities of the entire whitetail season—but when the acorns start dropping, the deer can change their patterns fast. In this episode, Arron sits down with Alex to talk about preparing for the early season, finding deer as food sources begin to change, and the importance of putting the pieces together before hunting pressure ramps up. They break down this year’s heavy red and shingle oak crop, how it’s influencing bedding and travel, and how they’re using fresh sign, scrapes, and doe family groups to begin narrowing down where mature bucks are spending their time. Arron also talks about making the switch from a compound to a 57-inch recurve and the challenges of shooting traditional equipment from a saddle, while Alex shares his thoughts on hunting hill country, managing thermals, and the realities of side-hilling to keep the wind in your favor.
