Description
The Habitat Podcast is a podcast for land and wildlife habitat managers, and for hunters who learn and utilize different types of habitat in their hunting strategy. We interview hunters and habitat managers from across the country, picking their brain to learn their success's and failures. We are different in the fact that we are not the experts. This podcast is for us and the listeners to learn a thing or two, from the experts we analyze.

Habitat Podcast #378- In today’s episode of The Habitat Podcast, we are back in the studio with co-host Andy and Matt Bullins!
We discuss:
Overhunting the same spots quickly pushes mature bucks into nocturnal movement
Poor entry and exit routes alert deer before you ever reach your stand location
Mature bucks avoid main trails and use subtle, low-pressure travel routes
Hunting the wrong wind can ruin your chances before the hunt even begins
Staggering feed keeps deer checking during daylight instead of bedding nearby
Pressure is often the biggest factor limiting mature buck daylight activity
Simple mistakes repeated over time are what cost hunters their best opportunities
Strategic access and timing matter more than adding more habitat improvements
Once a mature buck daylights, you often have a very short window to kill him
Hunting less and being more intentional leads to more consistent success
And So Much More!

Habitat Podcast #377- In today’s episode of The Habitat Podcast, we are back in the studio with co-host Andy and Ryan Lawrence of Antler Anchor Co!
We discuss:
Finding shed antlers is a strong indicator of quality winter habitat.
Green food sources like clover often produce the most shed finds.
Shed hunting reveals bedding areas and late-season deer patterns.
Edges between food and cover are prime locations to search.
Fence crossings and terrain changes often cause antlers to drop.
Walking slowly is one of the most important shed hunting tactics.
Habitat improvements can increase deer use during winter months.
Shed hunting is a powerful scouting tool for the next season.
Mature bucks often drop antlers earlier due to testosterone changes.
Displaying sheds preserves the story of the deer that grew them.

Habitat Podcast #375 - In today’s episode of The Habitat Podcast, we are back in the studio with co-host Andy and Waylon Meyer of Earth Blinds!
We discuss:
Water sources often become social hubs for whitetail deer
Mature bucks may only visit specific areas they feel safe
Water holes create predictable movement opportunities
Strategic placement near bedding or transition zones can be deadly
Water sources are excellent trail camera locations
Proper pond design prevents wildlife from getting trapped
Preventing muddy edges can reduce disease transmission
Deer often prefer stagnant water over flowing streams
Pond size should match herd density and property size
Water holes are best used in low-pressure sanctuary areas

Habitat Podcast #375 - In today’s episode of The Habitat Podcast, we are back in the studio with co-host Andy and Cory Godar of Latitude Outdoors!
We discuss:
Weight savings matter most deep into multi-day hunts.
Saddle hunting isn’t just for public land — it’s a lethal private land tool.
Frame packs purpose-built for whitetail are filling a huge gap in the market.
Efficient packing systems reduce noise, stress, and fatigue.
Packing out a deer is often easier than dragging.
Simplicity wins — don’t overcomplicate your mobile setup.
Family life shifts priorities, but efficient systems maximize limited time.

Habitat Podcast #374 - In today’s episode of The Habitat Podcast, we are back in the studio with co-host Andy and Sam Tumberg of Purpose Filled Habitat Management! We discuss:
Most hinge cuts fail because they aren’t aggressive enough
Flush cutting is often more reliable than hinge cutting in northern timber
Mature bucks are nomadic — focus on security cover, not “buck beds”
Half-acre bedding cuts are a strong starting point for most properties
Downed large-diameter trees create high-value structure
Layer hinge heights to control sightlines and security
Ash trees can barber-chair — extreme caution required
Water sources inside staging areas can dramatically increase daylight activity
Cutting junk oaks increases acorn production from healthy oaks
Always bring two chainsaws
And So Much More!

Bad decisions still happen to experienced hunters
Land can be monetized beyond hunting alone
Deer density doesn’t equal hunt quality
Long-term vision beats short-term success

Switchgrass is useful—but often overused for bedding
Living on your property helps hunters more than deer
Cutting harder early speeds up timber regeneration
Water control quietly dictates deer movement and use
Less hunting pressure beats perfect habitat design
Food plots help hunters more than deer if misused
Small properties win by being different than neighbors
Mature bucks survive pressure better than most think

Habitat Podcast #367 - In today’s episode of The Habitat Podcast, we are back in the studio with our good friends Adam Miller and Nate Rozeveld! We discuss:
Private land deer move differently than pressured public land deer
Equipment upgrades can unlock major habitat improvements
Small plots can be movement tools, not just feeding destinations
Doe harvest is a critical but often underused management lever
Seeing deer doesn’t always mean appreciating the hunt
Out-of-state habitat diversity changes deer movement drastically
Transitions matter more than acreage size
Boots-on-the-ground scouting still beats digital maps alone
Late-season doe harvest can improve herd health
Hunting mindset matters as much as strategy

Habitat Podcast #366 - In today’s episode of The Habitat Podcast, we are back in the studio with our good friends Erich Long and Cody Altizer! We discuss:
Managing for grouse improves deer habitat across the entire property
Grouse are specialists; deer benefit from the habitat they require
Forest health is the foundation of all successful wildlife management
Everything done for grouse benefits whitetails, not the other way around
Deer thrive as generalists; grouse expose weak habitat
Young forest habitat benefits deer, turkeys, birds, and pollinators
Invasive species quietly destroy forest-floor wildlife habitat
Responsible logging creates life, not destruction
Managing from the forest floor up changes everything
Grouse are a gateway species for better land stewardship

Hunting is about restraint, not just killing deer
Mature bucks are killed before the hunt begins
Access matters more than stand placement
Less pressure equals more daylight movement
Soil health directly impacts antler growth
Habitat beats gadgets every time
Let good bucks walk to grow great ones
Cover keeps deer home year-round
Patience is the most valuable hunting skill

Habitat Podcast #364 - In today’s episode of The Habitat Podcast, we are back in the studio with Co-Host Andy Hutchens and our good friend Blaine Becker! We discuss:
Habitat success is built through long-term, consistent work
Pressure management matters as much as food and cover
Timber work can reshape deer movement patterns
Mature bucks react more to pressure than attraction
Seasonal context should guide every habitat decision
Observation beats forcing hunts or overplanning
Less intrusion often leads to better daylight movement
Habitat improvements benefit deer year-round
Smart access is critical to protecting core areas
Patience and discipline separate good habitat from great habitat

Very informative and entertaining podcast. Been listening for a few years, and turned several others that are trying to manage their properties on to this podcast. Thanks for doing it.
when you put these pockets in, are you connecting them with strips of thicket? or leaving patches of open hardwoods?
nice pod. I will be in the woods this weekend dropping trees..
Great episode. Very informative. Thanks for sharing.
I just inherited a 10 acre plot from my Grandpa where all we do is deer hunt out of it, no structures on site near the Tawas area. I’ve been trying over the years to start putting in food plots and work the land to make it hold more deer and try to help with a teller growth but have been struggling with exactly what and how to go about this. I just listened to the Wired to Hunt podcast and found out about you and loved what you had to say. I’m hear to learn more to hopefully start having great success for years to come when my kids get old enough to enjoy it also. Thank you for the help!
I really enjoy listening to something different from a podcast. I love podcast that you learn a thing or two and these guys seem to be helping everyone listening. Keep up the good work!
Awesome resource for hunters and general habitat managers. Great content and intriguing guests! Keep it up Habitat Podcast!!
