Description
Nurse, author and Director of Born at the Right Time, Rachel Wright talks to fellow parents of people with disabilities and others in their community. With the power of story telling, laughter, swearing and useful information they create solace in knowing the warts and all truth of this off piste version of parenting.
Whether a well seasoned parent, newbie, one of many practitioners supporting families or simply someone wanting to peak over the fence - you’re welcome to listen in. We are better together, whatever Skies We’re Under.

It’s been a looooong summer!
You’re all invited to a wee celebration of surviving the summer, celebrating the wins, navigating the tricky parts, and transitioning back to a new term.
Rachel, Sarah and Lucy get right back into it, from Rachel’s erroneous winking, Sarah’s paddle boarding with her Dad’s ashes and Lucy’s big pat on the back for some epic milestones and summer achievements. We have it all, including what we have learned about starting a new term well.
To help us get back to podcasting and planning for season 5 we’d LOVE it if you could support the podcast, like, subscribe, review and share. The more listeners we get, the more we’ll be able to provide things to listen to - and we’re chock full of ideas!
We’d love to hear from you – we love sharing stories, we love hearing how things are going, the good, the bad, the snotty-crying ugly.

It’s the end of Season Four — and true to form, we’re going out with laughter, chaos, honesty, and a few tears (obviously). In this unfiltered finale, Rachel is joined by the ever-brilliant Sarah Clayton and Lucy Parr for a raw and riotous debrief on what’s been a monumental season.
We chat about Brecon’s last-minute bungalow miracle, navigating adult social care (DIY included), and that never-ending sense of "it'll be easier once…" — spoiler: it never is. From half-finished makeup and eye puffiness to trauma tap-outs and euphemisms for death, no subject is off-limits.
We reflect on the highs, heartbreaks, and hilarity of the past 44 episodes — covering everything from trauma and mental health to communication, connection, and end-of-life planning.
We’ve got advice for the summer holidays (it involves not looking at instagram) and just genuinely reflecting on how being together is basically free therapy. Pull up a chair, breathe through the madness, and join us in celebrating everything we’ve shared this season under these endlessly complicated skies.

We’ve got a not to be missed interview with super Stephen Unwin, he’s on a mission to make people rethink how we view people with Learning Disabilities, as well as shining a light on the world's families like ours navigate.
In his book ‘Beautiful Lives - How we got Learning Disabilities So Wrong’ Stephen uses his knowledge, experience and research to provide insight and challenge, and today’s episode provides a wonderful snapshot of his brilliance, as well as his wicked sense of humour.
You can find more about Stephen on his website at: https://www.stephenunwin.uk/

What if all the things we doggedly pursue to help our children are inherently toxic to their relationship with their own body and disability? After Episode 40's genuinely core-shaking discussion with Amy Hogan, Rachel, Sarah and Lucy discuss where their perspectives align and deviate both parents and professionals.

Join us for the brilliance of Professional Geek Amy Hogan, she’ll make you rethink and reframe disability, and help bridge that gap between the experiences of a parent of a disabled child and the experience of the disabled person themselves.
After the usual catch up with Sarah and Lucy, Rachel talks to Amy about the limitations of interventions like physiotherapy and the need for mental health support for parents and children processing a life they hadn’t imagined. She discusses the outcomes we really should be focusing on with our children, as well as challenging concepts around disability and helping us to confront our own (and other people’s) Ableism.
There is SO much we cover, that we’ve had to split this episode in two. Join us on Friday for our bonus episode where Rachel, Sarah and Lucy reflect on the magnificent wisdom of Amy.

Puberty, sexual consent, sexuality and gender are some of the topics making Rachel blush in her conversation with Michael Fullerton in another must-listen episode of The Skies We’re Under Podcast. 🙌 These are conversations we need to have with our young people and Michael supports us to better understand how we support our children with profound disabilities - especially when our emotions aren’t keeping pace with their bodies. 💫

To celebrate Learning Disability Week Rachel is joined by the dynamic duo Olly and Natty. A perfect pairing, who were introduced by parents Sally Philips
and Hayley Newman. They talk through how they met, describe their perfect day and have a sing-a-long not to be missed.
Rachel, Sarah and Lucy also reflect on the joy of knowing and loving someone with Learning Disabilities - and quite what it’s like to be a parent of somebody with a Black Belt in Mindfulness.

Grief comes in all shapes and sizes, be that anticipatory, or following the death of a child. In Rachel’s authentic and resonant conversation with Gabriella Walker, she reflects on how grief can be made more complex, and more difficult when the services she worked for failed to support her daughter and family in a way she needed.
In one of our broadest episodes to date, we cover how it feels to work within a system you thought would be there to catch you but doesn’t, and how hard it is when you realise you’ve been failed by something you believe in. You can find out about the fantastic work Gabriella is doing to support families on her website https://irisfamilysupport.org
We also talk about;
bereavement and complex grief
systems generated trauma
how a universal health care system struggles even more when faced with complex disability
the importance of self compassion

We’re thinking about the times of transition, from starting to use equipment or bringing carers into your home for the first time. Who and what helped us in the times where we need to think with both our heads and our hearts.
The trio share the things that have made those transitions easier*, and the impact that changes have on us both emotionally and practically.
We also cover consistent naming conventions for genitalia, how on earth you could ever predict when someone’s birthday might be (?!) and the general challenges and joys that life throws at us.

As a bonus episode, to coincide with Dying Matters Week we bring you an insightful conversation with Dr Tim Wright (GP), and Lucy (Paediatric Sister), members of Rachel’s family who both work in the local children’s hospice. This beautiful, tender and raw conversation has the reality of both sides of the bed. Providing care for families of children who have life-limiting conditions and at end of life, as well as loving someone with a life-limiting condition.
Dying Matters is a campaign run by the charity, Hospice UK. Hospice UK work with organisations, decision makers and the public to make things better for people who are dying or grieving. The hardest conversations are often the most important and here we talk about some of the jargon you might come across, having a take-away at a hospice and the ‘brutiful’ (beautiful and brutal) reality of fighting for a good death. The tech wasn’t to the standard we would typically aim for but the conversation was real and raw.
CONTENT WARNING
We realise that these will be tricky topics for some, so please be aware this episode will contain discussions around Death, Dying, End of Life Care and DNACPR.

We’re going back to school - and thinking about those people who demonstrated innate humanity and kindness, and really ‘got’ our children.
Rachel and Sarah reflect on their experiences with school days, from those scary first days of school to college days. The need to trust, and build relationships with the many people who are involved in supporting disabled children in education settings.
In addition, Sarah is trying to exercise some self compassion, and Rachel has been creating waterfalls (quite literally) in her home…

We reflect on the people who have helped us hear the news we don’t want to, as we continue to receive diagnoses, which never get easier to hear, no matter how ‘used to it’ we are.
Thanks to the lovely folk at Jiraffe for sponsoring this week's episode. You can find more about them and their work here.
We’d love to hear from you – we love sharing stories, we love hearing how things are going, the good, the bad, the snotty-crying ugly.

Join Rachel, Sarah and Lucy as we celebrate those people who change the world, be it campaigning for the right to medical treatment, supporting other parents, breaking down barriers, or just making a nuisance of themselves to get the voices of disabled people heard.
On this week’s episode we open up by reflecting on some of the world changers we know*, and reflect on why and how this is different for the disability community.
Rachel is then joined by Hannah Deacon, whose dedication to campaigning for patients' rights succeeded when the law changed on 1 November 2018, which led to cannabis becoming legal as a medical treatment. Her successful campaign on behalf of son Alfie Dingley, who lives with a rare and severe form of epilepsy, led to his doctors receiving the first schedule one license to prescribe whole-plant cannabis in the UK.
You can find more about Hannah and her work at her website.

The ability to connect with others is a joy. Rachel reflects on the things that support and prevent connection (technical and human!) with the brilliant Dr. Beth Moulam, Paralympian, researcher, advocate and award winning all round super human.
Beth shares her thoughts on the communication tools we all use, and the tools she uses. The challenges she faces (spoiler alert - it’s normally other people), and the joy she finds in creating new connections, and creating community around her, in the breathtaking number of fields she’s involved in.
Rachel, Sarah and Lucy bring updates and reflections, there's news from the Moths, and Lucy broke a TSWU record, by swearing right from the outset - having to bring “all your BLEEPING podcast BEEP to work is not the best way to start the day!
You can find more about Beth on her website and you tube page.

We get by with a little help from our friends…This week’s episode of The Skies We’re Under we’ve gone right back to the 1980s and made our very own mixtape!
In our series on community and connection we turn focusing on our friendships. The people who are a shoulder to cry on, a partner on the dance floor or just the unexpected person who shows up.
We hear from some of our wonderful listeners who left speakpipes recognising and thanking their own friends as well as Lucy Parr chatting to her “shit life off” friend Sarah - (not podcast Sarah). And Jo, who works behind the scenes on the podcast, chats with her friend and neighbour Lyndsey.
It’s all about the love stories of friendship.
We’d love to hear from you – we love sharing stories, we love hearing how things are going, the good, the bad, the snotty-crying ugly.
