Description

Taking Note is a music podcast by Scottish fiddle/piano duo Charlie Grey and Joseph Peach.

Each episode features a unique collaboration and conversation with a guest artist from across worlds of folk, classical, jazz and electronica. The podcast is a celebration of new music, creative processes, and a wide range of artistic voices.

The guest artists - friends, colleagues, musical heroes, are asked to bring the seed of an idea to the table. Over the course of a day-long writing session, this was developed into a complete piece of new, collaborative music. Each writing session and the new music created then became a podcast episode

The podcast allows the listener the rare perspective of becoming a fly on the wall of the rehearsal room. It is an invitation into that process of collaboration, where conversation and ideas become new music, as well as a chance to hear the end results.

Duncan Chisholm is one of Scotland’s most recognised and accomplished fiddle players and composers; Duncan’s music contains the rarest of chemistries, a glorious combination of invention, tenderness and passion. Born and brought up near Inverness in the Highlands of Scotland, Duncan has spent most of his life developing his unique musical voice. Fiddle playing at its best, Duncan’s feather-light handling of dynamics and ornamentation, allied with his pure-distilled tone, lend his characteristic spine-tingling magic to his music.Winner of the 2018 Scots Trad Music Awards ‘Album of the Year’ for his latest studio album Sandwood, Duncan creates music which is sumptuously layered and awash with dazzling colours, textures and rhythms. It is music that requires no introductions or programme notes to carry you on its journey. The sound may be traditional but this is 21st Century traditional music which is sophisticated, exhilarating and meltingly beautiful.Duncan’s well-established musical career has taken him throughout the UK, Europe and the USA, both through his solo work and while playing with other musicians and bands. With such a personal interest in and connection to the Highland landscape that so deeply inspires him, Duncan has worked hard to instil great pride and passion into recording musical masterpieces influenced by Scotland’s wild places.“My creative world widens with each passing year and the possibilities for self-expression are limitless. Enjoy the music.” Duncan Chisholm. Please consider supporting this podcast by subscribing on Bandcamp Hosted on Acast. Josie’s original songs were receiving airtime on Radio 2 before she even left university, and by the time she had graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, audiences at festivals all over the world, from festival stages in Australia to basements in Glasgow, had come to recognise her as a vital figure within Scottish folk music. The intervening years have led her to become an expert in crafting heart-warming songs which delicately balance traditional idioms and a contemporary outlook. Her own band offers a rich listening experience where captivating and melancholic vocal harmonies melt effortlessly into upbeat, searing melodies.Josie’s Links:Website | Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | BandcampPlease consider supporting the podcast by subscribing on Bandcamp Hosted on Acast. Quee is one of the most creative people we know. We first met and worked with him making music for an outdoor theatre show in the woods in the North East of Scotland, and have been lucky to continue hanging out and playing together since. He’s a member of acid-croft legends Shooglenifty, and a composer of music and soundscapes for dance and theatre.Quee’s Links:Website | BandcampPlease consider supporting the podcast by subscribing on Bandcamp Hosted on Acast. Last year, we released our fourth album, titled Spiorachas - A High Place. We wrote and recorded it in the winter, the quiet of the world around us gave us time and space of mind to really get into the music, to find ways of playing as freely and honestly as we could - chasing these qualities that define our music-making together. For these episodes we thought we’d do a listen through of the album, with some introductions to and background about the music on there. Website | Facebook | Instagram | BandcampPlease consider supporting the podcast by subscribing on Bandcamp Hosted on Acast. Blair Coron is a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter from Springfield, a small village in Scotland. His music blends modern classical, folk and poetry, with nature, people, time and place being common themes throughout. After a number of months of recording these podcasts with a wonderful array of guest artists, we thought we’d make an episode just the two of us, talking about what lies behind our music making as a duo, and making a new piece of music. Please consider supporting the podcast by subscribing on Bandcamp Hosted on Acast. Our pilot episode! We recorded this way back in autumn 2020, whilst in residency at Snape Maltings supported by Britten Pears Arts. We spent a week testing ideas and basically figuring out how the Taking Note podcast would work. Our guest and guinea pig for the week was the wonderful Owen Sinclair. A talented multi-instrumentalist, and member of the bands Tannara, Inyal and Westward the Light, he helped us shape the podcast into the form you’ve heard over this series. Eventually, Owen became the podcast’s producer, and played a huge role in its creation - thanks Owen!
