The Nazi uniform saga that engulfed NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet last week has led to a string of questions. Should he be held accountable for something that happened almost 20 years ago? Should he resign? Why did he admit it right before a state election? Lucy and James discuss all that and more, in this week's edition of Flash Drive. Plague. War. Pestilence. 2022 had just about everything. In this special edition of Flash Drive, Lucy McLeod and James Law go through the biggest stories from Australia, around the world, and in sport, that made ripples in the media. It was a year that started in lockdown, with most of Australia still dealing with outbreaks, and a rush to get everyone vaccinated. But February came, and with it, Russia's invasion of Ukraine. And there were still 10 months of chaos to go. These are the yarns that you'll remember for years to come.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The new Harry and Meghan docuseries is out and ... well, does anyone care anymore? It was meant to be a bombshell. Tabloids in the UK obsessing over it, people eagerly anticipating the drop but in the end it's a little .. meh? There was meant to be drama. It was meant to be an explosive about the privacy intrusion of life in the world's most famous family but in the end, it's all a bit expected. Lucy McLeod and James Law dissect the disappointment and disenchantment with the latest royal release. Meanwhile in NSW, renters are set for a huge boost with rental auctions set to be banned immediately. Is this a change for the better? And finally, the controversial Bali bonk ban has had another twist, with foreigners sensationally allowed a reprieve, with Indonesia's new sex laws set to spare visitors to the tourist Mecca.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Well, the commentators got it wrong. And they're still getting it wrong. Media all over Australia predicted it would be close, and potentially even a Labor loss.  Well, Daniel Andrews and Labor won. Convincingly. But why? It's not just the Coalition's unpopularity, it's the simple fact that people in Victoria still love the man. James Law and Lucy McLeod go over the election that guaranteed Andrews will become Victoria's longest-serving Labor premier, and just why the state keeps voting him in. Elsewhere, Scott Morrison's in trouble. The former Prime Minister will be censured by Parliament for his secret ministries scandal. What was behind his thinking? And what happens once he motion passes? And finally, it's schoolies time! James and Lucy discuss the fine Australian tradition and why this year is being dubbed the 'tamest ever'. Hosts are dropping like flies from Logie-award winning current affairs show The Project. Why? Network Ten's flagship program only one of the most popular shows on Australian television, but also one of the most criticised on social media. Hot takes are analysed intently. Hosts are criticised whatever they do or say. But is this targeted toxicity the real reason that Lisa Wilkinson is the latest to say she's leaving? James Law and Lucy McLeod talk about their experiences with trolls and how they affect journalists. Meanwhile there's a little tournament in Qatar that's capturing the world's attention, and not for all the right reasons. Fans from around the world have descended on Doha, but it's not all football they're talking about. Its treatment of migrant workers, LGBTQI+ people, women, and minorities has taken precedence over the football. But is it right to put it on the footballers to take a stand? And finally, Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter couldn't have been more chaotic if it tried. There's been mass layoffs. Staff asked to commit to 'hardcore work' or told to leave. Other staff locked out of the office.  Will Twitter survive the next few weeks, or will Elon drive it into the ground? Yep, it happened. Donald Trump has officially announced his intention to run for President again in 2024.  But does America want him? Not only will he have to compete with a Democratic nominee for the presidency, but Trump also faces a tougher challenge from within the Republican Party as Florida governor Ron DeSantis looking a formidable candidate in the primaries. Lucy McLeod and James Law break down what we can expect over the next two years, and if Trump can be successful. In our own backyard, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has met with Chinese president Xi Jinping, bringing an end to a frosty six year relationship between Australia and China. How did it go? What does it mean? And finally, we've hit eight billion people! The world population has jumped by another billion in just 12 years. Can we sustain this growth? Will we sustain this growth? Unlikely, as Lucy explains why we're set for a decline sooner rather than later. A reminder if you like it, hit the subscribe button to get notified whenever a new episode goes live 👆 New to Flash? It was meant to be a reckoning for the Democrats but the US midterm elections have been anything but. While the Democrats look likely to lose the House, it wasn't a result that was unexpected. However, what was unexpected was the disappointing performance of Donald J Trump-backed candidates in certain seats. James Law and new Flash presenter Lucy McLeod break down the results of the US midterms and what it may mean for Trump's re-election bid in 2024. Back in Australia, would you want to live next to an ex-ISIS bride? Some mayors in Sydney are up in arms about the potential of bringing home family members of terrorists who went over to fight for Islamic State in the Middle East. And finally, there's been yet another hack on an Australian company. Medibank has been compromised and millions of Aussies are affected. But this time, it's even scarier with personal health data included in the data breach. How bad is this going to be? What can the average punter do moving forward? And will we ever see reform on data retention law? Lucy and J.Law discuss. A reminder if you like it, hit the subscribe button to get notified whenever a new episode goes live 👆 New to Flash? America feels more divided than ever. Inflation is skyrocketing, the economy is in tatters, abortion is once again on the agenda, and there's a looming threat to its entire democratic system on the horizon. It's all set to come to a head next week when Americans go to the polls to vote in the midterm elections, which will effectively be a referendum on Joe Biden's presidency so far. Can the Democrats keep control of Congress? Or will the Republicans capture the House or the Senate and put an end to any major legislation that Joe Biden may try to pass? Senior Fellow at Sydney University's United States Studies Centre Bruce Wolpe joins James Law for a special edition of Flash Drive. We discuss the issues that could decide the election, the state of play, and what this could mean for 2024 and the potential return of Donald Trump. The budget is in and it's not good news for regular Aussies. Wages aren't going up as quickly as inflation, power bills are set to skyrocket, and your groceries aren't getting any cheaper. Strap in, because the next few years are going to be expensive. James Law and news.com.au deputy editor Liz Burke break down what the Albanese government's first budget means for you. In short, it's grim. Meanwhile 'go woke, go broke' is back in the news after Gina Rinehart's Hancock Prospecting pulled a $15m sponsorship of Netball Australia. Is it a case of players standing up for their beliefs, or have they gone too far?   And finally, the United Kingdom has a fourth prime minister in three months, with Rishi Sunak elected after Liz Truss' resignation brought an end to her 44-day reign. Who would've thought we'd be talking about nuclear warfare in 2022? The prospect is realer than ever with Vladimir Putin seemingly becoming bolder and more desperate as Ukraine continues its counteroffensive in the Donbas and surrounds.  James Law and news.com.au deputy editor Liz Burke talk about the chances of the Russian leader resorting to the unthinkable, as he is ever embarrassed on the world stage by Ukraine's resilience. Meanwhile on the other side of the Atlantic, the investigation into the US Capitol insurrection took a dramatic turn when the committee voted to subpoena former president Donald Trump to hand over documents and testify under oath over what role he played in sparking the riot. Could we see some real consequences now, or will the teflon man escape once again? And with just weeks to go until the midterm elections, how will it affect the Republican Party? And finally, a Trump ally is also in the headlines for all the wrong reasons as Kanye West made a series of controversial pronouncements in recent weeks. From his 'White Lives Matter' shirts at Paris Fashion Week to anti-Semitic rants on social media, what's Kanye going through? Liz and J.Law discuss. EDITOR'S NOTE: We mention in the podcast that Stage 3 tax cuts will begin in 2023. This is incorrect; they are scheduled to begin in the 2024/25 financial year. Liz Truss won the gold medal for tax cut backflips this week, but will Anthony Albanese and treasurer Jim Chalmers follow suit?  With the Reserve Bank of Australia delivering a sixth-straight monthly interest rate rise, and recession fears rising across the globe, is Labor about to go back on its election promise to hand out tax cuts to the highest tier of earners?  James Law and news.com.au deputy editor Liz Burke discuss if it's the right move to give Australia's wealthiest a tax cut, or if Labor should try and save some money in the budget for the 'storm clouds' gathering. Meanwhile, the religious freedoms debate is back and raging, after 30-hour Essendon CEO Andrew Thorburn stands down after his links with a Victorian church that holds questionable views on abortion and homosexuality were uncovered. And finally, winter sport season is officially over after the Penrith Panthers steamrolled Parramatta in the NRL Grand Final. But did their bragging go too far? Some in the footy world are up in arms after they were called 'bad winners' for the showmanship in their celebrations. Are they right to be called out?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Another week, another PR disaster for a major Australian company. This time, Optus has been the victim of one of the largest cybercrimes in Australian history, but customers and politicians alike aren't buying the excuse. It took Optus 24 hours to email its customers after going out to media, and since the news broke, it's been trainwreck after trainwreck in front of television cameras and reporters. What does the cyberattack/hack mean for the everyday Aussie? What can you do to protect yourself? And what could Optus possibly do better? James Law and special guest news.com.au deputy editor Liz Burke break it down for you. While Optus struggles with the media, Vladimir Putin pulls some strings and delays a conscription and 'mobilisation' announcement just long enough to take the attention completely away from Queen Elizabeth's funeral, and makes some nuclear threats to make sure he really makes headlines. But how has the 'mobilisation' gone down in Russia? Not well according to reports, with tens of thousands of able-bodied men fleeing the country, as well as protests breaking out across the country. We dive in to how the news has been received, and what could be next in the war in Ukraine. On a lighter note, a new meme is born: Adam Levine's sh** sexts have broken the internet. The Maroon 5 lead singer has made headlines around the world for cheating on his wife with an Instagram model and influencer, and his dirty laundry being aired in the worst possible way. Well, there it is. The Queen has been buried, and more than two million people lined the streets of London to farewell her. But nothing's ever straightforward with the royals, and alongside the ceremony were all the side stories that stole the attention. Have Harry and William made up? Why was Charlotte crying? Did Meghan Markle fulfil the royals' expectations? Is King Charles now trying to send Harry further down the chain of succession? Liz Burke joins James Law to discuss all the pomp, pageantry and ceremony around the final farewell to the monarch that ruled over the United Kingdom over the last 70 years. Back in Australia, the economy is about to take centre stage once more as we edge towards yet another rate rise to fight inflation. The Reserve Bank governor Philip Lowe is under more pressure than ever before, is his luck running out? But he's not going down without a fight, arguing they have to keep raising rights to get the situation that no one could have predicted under control.  And finally, Ukraine has taken more territory in the last week than Russia has since April. What does this mean for the conflict? Could we see a light at the end of the tunnel, or are things just going to get even worse now? Mark it in your calendars. September 22. The official day of mourning for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. James Law is going to be sitting at home silently and reflecting on her reign. And definitely not at the pub. No sir, most certainly not enjoying the fine Australian tradition of an alcoholic beverage with some friends.  It's been a huge few days in news with the death of the monarch, the ascension of the new king, and a whole bunch of juicy gossip about the inner workings of the royals in between. But do you even care? And what's all this chat about a republic? J.Law and news.com.au's Liz Burke go into what happens next, and whether Australia is nailed on to become a republic after the Queen's death. Short answer, probably not, but maybe, if it's right. There's nothing like a tragedy to bring everyone together, and it looks like this may have just brought Harry and William back together. Is it for good? What happens next in the Meghan Markle royal soap opera? We discuss. And finally, television's night of nights has taken place and one network has absolutely scooped up all the awards. We go through exactly what needs to be on your bingelist, from Succession to Euphoria to The Bear and beyond.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Don't worry, this wraps up and puts a tidy bow on it, and tells you everything you need to know about the saga so you can impress your millennial, zillennial, and zoomer coworkers. Well, it's done. The trial that stopped Australia has a verdict: former teacher and rugby league player Chris Dawson killed his wife Lynette Dawson.  Judge Ian Harrison handed down a marathon five hour verdict on Tuesday on the murder trial that had caught Australia's attention. Georgie Tunny and James Law sum up the verdict, and talk about just why Australia has been obsessed with this case, and why the Hedley Thomas podcast Teacher's Pet may be to thank for Lyn's family finally getting justice after four decades. Elsewhere, we mark Anthony Albanese's 100 days in charge with a quick analysis of how the Labor Government has fared, from their highs and their lows, and just what we might expect next. Georgie lets loose her inner fangirl and reveals just how excited she is about Taylor Swift's 10th album, and the other cultural moments that came from the VMAs. And finally, Flash Drive farewells Georgie on her new adventure to Channel 10's The Project, and we mark a beautiful 30 episode run.
