And so we come to the end of Season 1 of Two Chocolate Cakes, and it is with one of the most bland meals out of the entire series, but still a meal I love more than anything--it is a comfort meal that I eat even now, many years later.  It is also one of the only kinds of meat I can manage to cook myself! After my parents' divorce, Kay took over hosting Christmas. There was something about Portland that gave me courage. I don't know if it was the weather, or the fact that I had a job where I was respected, or if it was all that incredible beer (and let me tell you, the beer was OUTSTANDING) or if it was the rain, but it was something. What does goes into the lunchbox when you're working as a landscaper with your father?

What was the first thing you learned to make when you left home? Do you remember? Did you have some kind of crazy college dorm room food hack? I did and IT WAS DELICIOUS!  PS. You can actually hear Peat yowling on this one. I just did not have it in me to re-record. So you get two sad cat meows as a gift with purchase.

In that weird in-between time of high school and college summer jobs, in the days before internships and real jobs, I worked at the most magical summer resort. If you remember the movie Dirty Dancing--you know this resort.  

My father's signature meal. After he got sober and changed jobs, my mother started working two nights a week at a halfway house. Dad and I took turns making dinner but neither of us were particularly skilled in the kitchen, but we liked what we ate. 

The Bullocks were one of many families that became my family, but the first family where I was well and truly wanted.

When your childhood friends go on without you.

Sometimes, it isn't the holiday, but all the rituals AROUND the holiday that is the special part. Oh, and the leftovers.

This is the First Chocolate Cake. 

Let's set the table, shall we?  This whole series started out as a literal recipe box that I still have, more than 25? maybe more? years later. I was looking at it as a creative writing prompt. Even though I keep a lot of my recipes in an online recipe keeper now because I am afraid of losing them, I still have my little recipe box, and all the cards. And every single one of them, even the ones not represented in this series, tell a story.
