Episode 42 of Quirky Cooking Chats (Season 2): Biological Dentistry & Nutrition Diagnostics... and Detoxing from Metals, Amalgams and Root Canals. [Learn about my gut-healing retreat in the Italian Alps, June 2024] A year or so ago, I realised that two root canals I'd had done years ago were both infected. I knew they were affecting my health and needed to be removed. However, after one removal, a bone graft, and a bad experience in the dentist's chair which resulted in my face and right side of my body being paralysed for hours, I decided to fly 2000 kms to the nearest biological dentist for help... From June to October 2023, I worked with Eric Davis Dental and Nutrition Diagnostics in Brisbane and had a 'total dental revision'. My dental health and body chemistry were reviewed in great detail (blood tests, mouth swabs, urine tests, energetic testing and more) and the links between the whole mouth and the health of my overall system were examined and explained. It has been fascinating and I've learned so much! After months of working to detox metals (old amalgams, environmental toxins), reduce inflammation from the infection under the root canal-filled teeth, improve sleep and insulin resistance, and balance my overall body chemistry, I was able to have the surgeries needed and continued with the protocol to heal. In this podcast you will get to sit in on my last appointment with Nutritionist Owen Davis BHSc (NutMed) as he goes through the results of my 'before and after' blood tests. He explains for my listeners the how and why of the healing protocol I've been doing for the past months, talks about the mouth-body connection, and explains the importance of balancing body chemistry to detox and heal. As you walk down the track from the house, sunlight flickers through the trees and the sound of rainforest birds and cicadas grows louder until it feels like you are immersed in tropical 'surround sound'. There under the rainforest canopy are row after row of lush vanilla vines, propped up by poles and trellises so that the flowers (or beans, depending on the time of year) are easy to access. Wondering how you’ll manage to eat healthy meals while you’re on the road? In this podcast Jo chats with her young friend from the UK, Tori, who is backpacking in Australia for a few months. Tori is a nutritional therapist with a passion for good food (and good coffee!) and she shares her tips for eating well, on a budget, while travelling. Jo also shares her advice for healthy eating while travelling, gleaned from years of travelling around Australia and overseas for her health and cooking workshops. Jo and Tori understand the struggle for those travelling with special diet needs. Oliver (Olly) James is a World Barista Competition Judge (and founder of the Tattooed Sailor Coffee Roasters) and is a keen supporter of local, indigenous produce and direct farm-sourced ingredients. Recently he was invited to help showcase the *Bush Beef from Normanby Station and help to get this uniquely flavoursome, sustainable meat out to the market. Jo and Olly discuss subjects ranging from the amazing variety of produce grown in Far North Queensland, locally-grown coffee and wild 'bush beef', to vanilla, seasonal cooking and how a trip to Ethiopia opened Olly's eyes to a wider definition of local food. This seems to be THE question right now. In this episode, Jo invites Dr Pran Yoganathan onto the show to share his thoughts on the meat question. Dr Pran is a gastroenterologist and founder of The Centre for Gastroenterology in Sydney. His aim is to empower his patients to embark on a journey of self-healing using the philosophy of “let food be thy medicine”. Dr Pran has a strong interest in the field of human nutrition. He practices an approach to healthcare that assesses the lifestyle of the patient to see how it impacts on their gastrointestinal and metabolic health. He believes that the current nutritional guidelines may not be based on perfect evidence and he passionately strives to provide the most up to date literature in healthcare and science to provide “Evidence-Based Medicine”. Dr Pran has a special interest in conditions such as Gastro-oesophageal Reflux (GORD), Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and abdominal bloating. He takes a very thorough approach to resolve these issues using dietary manipulation in conjunction with an accredited, highly qualified dietician, rather than resorting to long-term medications. Welcome to Episode 25 of Quirky Cooking Chats (Season 2), with Jo Whitton: Cooking with Joy & Deliciousness (+ 'Sweetness' is Not a Dirty Word!) - Jude Blereau Food is about nourishing the body AND soul! We often look at all the nutrients needed for the physical body to survive, but forget that the soul needs nutrients too. Wholefood chef Jude Blereau is a big believer that joy and deliciousness are nutrients in their own right. Jude says that the idea that wholesome sugars and fats are "bad" has done nobody any favours. "I’ve worked many years doing food coaching, and my average client was women in their 40’s that had followed this [low fat, low sugar diet] to the letter and their bones were shot, they were deeply unhappy in their life and [they'd followed] this harsh kind of, restrictive diet. Being constantly worried about ‘good and bad foods’ is a very stressful way to look at food... [and] arises from the loss of food culture." In the "health food" world, there's been a huge shift against sugars, even wholefood sugars. In this episode, Jude discusses why 'sweetness' is not a dirty word and why a little bit of wholesome sweetness in your life is actually a good thing. She also gives a clear argument against fake sweeteners, including the 'natural' ones made in laboratories. When you base your food decisions on foundational, whole-food principles, everything falls into place and decisions over what to eat and what not eat become much clearer.
