EPHESIANS SERIES: Episode 5 Chapter 5 covers two important themes: obedience to the example of Christ, and the relationship between husbands and wives. First, Paul discusses how believers are to be imitators of God through a focus on the love demonstrated by Christ (Ephesians 5:1–21). Second, wives and husbands are given clear biblical teachings regarding mutual love and submission in relationship to Christ (Ephesians 5:22–33). In Proverbs 3, we learn that if we acknowledge God, He will direct our paths. If God directs our paths, we can trust that direction with all our heart. Mark 14 is a fascinating chapter that contains the plot to kill Jesus, his anointing by a woman, the Last Supper, predictions of his betrayal and Peter's three denials of him. Jesus spends this entire chapter explaining that the Jewish religious and civil leaders are not nearly as wise or honorable as they claim to be. Their lack of understanding about what God values and intends for the world leads them to reject the truth they claim to teach. They turn obedience to God into a method for accruing honor from people. This chapter marks the last time Jesus is recorded teaching in the temple courtyard and the last public teaching of His ministry. Psalm 23 reminds us that in life or in death — in times of plenty or want — God is good and worthy of our trust. The psalm uses the metaphor of a shepherd's care for his sheep to describe the wisdom, strength and kindness of our God.
