Description

Welcome to How Not to Run a Business. I'm your host Jeremy Jacobs, entrepreneur, mentor, and consultant with over 15 years of experience starting and running many of my own successful businesses.

In each episode, I bring you an inspirational entrepreneur, expert, or message to help you the established or aspiring entrepreneurs and business owners of the world to improve your chance of success, have less stress and have a more enjoyable life.

I'm here to normalise conversations around failure, mental health, and the reality of being an entrepreneur, and in this podcast, you'll see what it really takes to start and run a successful business from people who've been there and done it.

We'll take a unique look at what mistakes these successful entrepreneurs have made, what lessons they learned, and what they would do differently to give you actionable advice so you don't repeat their mistakes.

Ever thought about starting a business whilst you're working full-time? Well Mark did exactly that. He started an ice cream company when he was working a hectic job at Virgin Atlantic. He didn't just start a little something on the side, he went all in to launch a brand new ice cream brand to challenge an already saturated and competitive market. It didn't end well.  Mark very kindly agreed to come and share his story with us. And boy, it is a story! I am very proud to bring you this episode. Mark is an incredible man. Not only has he had an amazing career to Virgin Atlantic and British Airways but he's a thoroughly decent human. This episode is back to back with honesty, great advice and tips on How Not to Run a Business! ***Jeremy Jacobs is an experienced entrepreneur, business consultant, and mentor. It's almost mid way through 2023 and I have been reflecting on the year so far. I have been checking in with my goals and plans for the year. It got me thinking about how, we business owners, we're generally on one of two paths in our business journey. In this episode I pick apart what they are and ask some key questions for you to ponder to assess and evaluate your goals in business and life.  I also talk about one of the key mistakes people make with their approach to their business and life. The question is, which path are you on? Like this show? Dr Fiona Peters  is a UK based leading expert in Neurodiversity in the workplace and in her personal life, as well as an authority on the impact of the mixed-race classification in organisations and families. She has ADHD and she was diagnosed in her early 50s. We sat down to talk about ADHD, failure and how to heal post-diagnosis. Fiona has a mission to help support people in business with ADHD. Using her extensive experience and her personal experience of having ADHD we had a fascinating conversion about her journey to diagnosis and what impact that has had on her personal and professional life. We touch on the experience of being diagnosed in an adulthood as children of the 70s and 80s and growing up in a world where little was understood about ADHD and neurodiversity. It was a very deep, raw and honest conversation that I know will support those with ADHD or thinking they may have it.This is part 2 of a two part episode. Mindset is something we talk a lot about and it's the foundation for us all being successful. The truth is, we are going fail in our journey to grow and succeed. It's a part of life. An important part of failure is your mindset and approach to how you deal with failure. In this episode I discussed the relationship between your mindset and success. How does it impact on your ability to recover from failure. I open up about my grappling with failure since closing my business and a realisation I saw about my mindset and how it was stopping me and holding me back.  In this episode I talk about: What mindset is.Growth vs. fixed mindset.Theory of intelligence: entity theory vs. increment theory. How your approach may determine how you will react to failure. An example from my life around how my mindset has impacted my ability to be successful.Important things you need to know to help develop a growth mindset. How other people's opinions can shape your life. How we can reframe and reset our mindset to help us recover from failure. Like this show? How can we, as entrepreneurs improve our fitness levels and do more exercise? Fitness and exercise doesn't come naturally to everyone, unless you are fully committed or a personal trainer then you may find it a challenge to get out for a run or down the gym for a workout. This is even harder if you have dependants like kids or people you care for. The challenges entrepreneurs and business owners face only makes it harder. Especially when you start out or you are going through a rough patch. That said making exercise part of your routine is critical to support you in being successful in your business. In this episode I explore the topic with personal trainer, fitness expert and entrepreneur Lynsey Treharne. She is deeply passionate about helping women get into the weight section of the gym but anyone can benefit from her passion, knowledge and experience. How can we improve our fitness and wellbeing with the pressures of running a business? Is there a link between success in business and having a success fitness regime? How do you manage to fit exercise in when you have no two weeks that look the same?  Like this show? Why are business leaders still leading through fear and intimidation? Treating people with a lack of respect? Why does this seem to be more prevalent in the investor community? We see it on TV and I see it happening in the business community, investors speaking to their potential investees like crap. In this episode I explore what's wrong with this attitude and why it needs to change. This episode is useful for small businesses that are seeking investment from investors. Like this show? My friend Alex Chisnall did me the honour of joining me on the podcast to talk about his journey from cabin crew, to not being able to get a job interview at Tesco to becoming an entrepreneur. Come on his journey from serving drinks at 35,000 feet to having a number one podcast on its 500 episode after 6 years and his own successful podcast agency. He's the man responsible for helping me get How Not to Run a Business off the ground, so he's a very special guest. It's an open, honest, and frank conversation about his journey, his successes and failures. He started his journey having no idea what he wanted to do. After spending a year developing a business plan, he got started building a sports injury clinic. It all came crashing down around Alex to the point he had a debt collector park his car on his drive and refuse to move it until he paid up. Now he's running his podcast and his podcast agency. This is an important lesson in scaling too quickly and taking a step back from your business too quickly, not planning and avoiding paying your rent! We touch on his journey to launch his podcast from 2 downloads in the first week, then to 50,000 downloads a week. It's a great lesson is perseverance and determination. It's an incredible conversation, Alex's honest is refreshing and you will learn a lot! Hosted on Acast.
