On this month's episode of Start Spreading the News we talk about a news story that dominated social media, a Nat Geo study that shows what happens to our brain when we doom scroll, the only thing Russ and I both like abut Mayor Eric Adams, the senseless murder of Iryna Zarutska, the developing case of Celeste Hernandez and singer David, a new segment we are adding to the show and so much more!! On this episode of Wife of Crime I tell Russ about the CIA’s secret mind-control program known as MK Ultra. In the 1960s, a CIA scientist named Frank Olson fell from a 10th-floor Manhattan hotel window. His family was told it was suicide. But that “official story” would turn out to be the first crack exposing a web of corruption, cover-ups, and shocking experiments performed on unsuspecting citizens. This case isn’t just about one man’s mysterious death, it’s a reminder of how easily truth can be buried when powerful institutions control the narrative. Moral of this story... In the ‘60s it was LSD. Today it’s algorithms. Either way, someone is always trying to influence how you think. Big Shout out to Myrtle for helping me research this heavy hitter! But after learning he was murdered with a SWORD... cops started to realize there had to be way more to this story! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
On this episode of Wife of Crime I'm telling Russ the insane case of the Pike County Massacre. When 8 members of the Rhoden Family are all murdered, in a single night, in 4 separate locations... it leaves a small town shocked and terrified! Until one day when she invited her ex husband's family over for lunch. Within 12 hours all 4 of her lunch guests would be in the ICU, in critical condition and by the end of that week, 1 of them would be in a coma and 3 of them would be dead. Did Erin poison her lunch guests? Or was this just one big accident?? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On this episode of Wife of Crime I'm telling Russ about the senseless murder of Lauren Giddings. Lauren had just finished law school and was studying to take the Bar Exam. When friends and family didn't hear anything from her for a few days however, they started to get concerned. Among the friends searching for her was a man none of them knew too well... her next door neighbor Stephen McDaniel. Soon everyone would discover that while Lauren was simply just being neighborly to Stephen, waving and smiling at him in passing, he was building a fantasy world in his head and it completely revolved around Lauren. Moral of this story... We never truly know what's going on behind closed doors. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
On this episode of Wife of Crime I'm telling Russ the harrowing and tragic case of Judy Malinowski. In 2015 Judy was in a volatile relationship with her boyfriend Mike Slager. One afternoon while stopping at a gas station for cigarettes the two of them get into a fight and Mike pours gasoline on Judy and sets her on fire! Over the next 2 years she would fight through unfathomable pain to stay alive. She not only changed the law in Ohio but would be the first person in US history to testify in her own murder trial! Moral of this story... "we will either find a way, or make one." - Hannibal Barca  Huge shout out to Myrtle for helping me research this episode!  Learn more about your ad choices. On this episode of Wife of Crime I'm telling Russ the shocking case of The Chicago Ripper Crew. We have talked about serial killers many times but I have never heard of a group of serial killers that murdered together. These 4 men unfortunately found one another, killed together and performed disgusting "satanic" rituals. I have never covered a case this brutal and I'm not lying when I tell you I have 2 nightmares this week about this case. Moral of this story... On this episode of Wife of Crime I am telling Russ all about the rise and fall of the most well known mafia boss of our generation, John Gotti. I also tell you guys about what got me so interested in the mafia and why they are some of my favorite cases to research! John Gotti's story is full of drama. He was all over the media in the 80s and 90s and he absolutely loved the attention. The media dubbed him "The Dapper Don", he was a cold blooded killer in a $2000 suit. Unfortunately, like most megalomaniacs the fall from the top comes swift and hard. In a world that prides itself on loyalty John Gotti's disloyalty to his closest ally would lead to his own undoing as well as the fall of the entire Gambino crime family. Moral of the story... On this episode of Wife of Crime I am telling Russ all about the diabolical cult leader Reverend Jim Jones and his church The Peoples Temple. Most people have heard the expression "Don't drink the kool aid..." but not everyone knows where this warning actually stemmed from. Jim Jones started his church with a mission to help Black Americans at a time when racial tensions were at an all time high. He preached a socialist message and in the early years did many good things for the poor and homeless as well. But as time passed something sinister was growing inside of him. The power he held went unchecked and that power became a hell of a drug... In Part 1 we discuss Jim's childhood and the early years of his church. You may find yourself asking... can someone who does evil things also have good in them?? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

I grew up in a city in between Houston and Galveston and I can confirm that no one there calls it the highway to hell. That's just made up by media and Podcasters for dramatic effect. 🙄

I think this was the FIRST true crime audio that I almost couldn't listen to. That recording was wild...and terrifying. Excellent episode, though! I hadn't heard of this, thanks for sharing.
