Baseball and BBQ

Episode 334 features Ed Banos, the son of Les Banos, a World War II spy who saved more than 200 lives during the Holocaust and later became a sports photographer, and Aaron Huentelman, competition meat manager at Mr. Brisket Ed Banos serves as the President and CEO for University Health and was recognized as a Healthcare Hero by the San Antonio Business Journal.  However, it is not his story we are focused on, but rather the story of Ed's father, Les Banos.  The following are excerpted from online obituaries, "Raised in Budapest, Hungary, Les Banos hid countrymen from the Nazis during World War II and infiltrated German SS headquarters as an Allied spy. He helped hide and save the lives of hundreds of Hungarians.  After the war, he immigrated to the United States, attended the University of Pittsburgh and worked as a cameraman for local TV stations and as a  photographer for the Pirates, Steelers, and Penguins.  Les Banos' favorite subject was his friend, Roberto Clemente, who died Dec. 31, 1972, in a plane crash during a relief mission to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.  Les Banos often said he should have been on that plane, but that was the day the Steelers, played Miami in the AFC championship. The game was made possible by the Steelers beating Oakland the previous week on the Immaculate Reception.  Les Banos captured Clemente's 3,000th hit in a frame-by-frame sequence, and many of his photos have been displayed in exhibitions through the years. A current collection can be seen at the Roberto Clemente Museum in Lawrenceville. Aaron Huentelman is the competition meat manager at Mr. Brisket, a premium quality butcher shop.  He has a degree in restaurant management, has worked in numerous kitchens over the years, and has also managed several restaurants.  His passion, however, is meat smoking. Episode 333 features LC's Bar-B-Q owner, Tausha Hammett carries on her grandfather's legacy and New York State Baseball Hall of Fame member, Tony Morante provide exceptional barbecue and baseball talk Tausha Hammett is the owner of LC’s Bar-B-Q in Kansas City, Missouri and the granddaughter of the founder, LC Richardson.  At 12 years old she began learning the business and helping.  Per Tausha, "My grandfather was a pillar and BBQ legend in the Black community and my goal is to keep his legacy and brand strong."  She is doing just that as she does everything needed to run the restaurant, "If I have to come in here after a full day, I come in here and if I have to open, I open. If I have to close, I close."  She also said, "When I make decisions that affect his legacy, I always have him in the back of my mind.  I feel like he's always looking down on me."  Ray Sheehan was instrumental in introducing us to Tausha and joins us as guest co-host. Tony Morante is a member of the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame and a Bronx, New York lifetime resident.  His father was a Yankee Stadium usher and Tony had the thrill of accompanying him to games and eventually working at the Stadium in 1958 also as an usher.  In 1973 Tony was offered a job in the New York Yankees Group and Season Sales Department.  In 1979 with the help of the Bronx County Historical Society, he began walking tours of the Stadium.  By 1998, George Steinbrenner helped Tony open a Tours Department.  Revenue accrued through the tours benefitted the Yankee Foundation, a charitable program that brought education and recreation programs to the inner-city youth.  Included among his many other accomplishments is that Tony is the author of the book, Baseball: The New York Game:  How the National Pastime Paralleled US History. Episode 332 features the coauthor of Attorneys in the Baseball Hall of Fame:  A Collection of Biographical Essays, Louis H. Schiff and up-and-coming pitmaster and barbecue aficionado, Brayden Estrela, and Johnny Mags as guest co-host. Louis H. Schiff is a retired judge, attorney, professor, historian and author. During college, he interned with the New York Yankees Class A farm club, serving as public relations director.  He declined a public relations job offer from Yankees owner, George Steinbrenner to pursue law school.  His latest book, which he coauthored with Robert M. Bob Robinson, godfather of Pellet grills and Joel Bradley, author of Death By Data, plus guest co-host, Chef Ray Sheehan, and feelings are discussed Bob Robinson is the man credited as being the godfather of pellet grills. Born and raised in St. Joseph, Missouri, Bob found his barbecue roots early on and helped create the barrel lid that pellet grills are known for today. Bob won many barbecue competitions while helping raise national awareness for the pellet grill segment.  Bob stopped competing in the mid-1990s, but in 1998, he made a cameo appearance on a team with Fast Eddy for the Jack Daniel’s World Championship Competition. They were the only team using a pellet grill at that time.  Bob discusses his role in the barbeccue industry and more specifically his role in helping the pellet grill become the cooking force it is today. Joel Bradley is a long-time scout and high school coach of future major leaguers Anthony Rizzo, Mike Fiers, Andy Painter, and many others.  His latest book, Death By Data: How Analytics And Technology Are Killing Baseball provides an inside look at how traditional player scouting and development have been replaced by a blind faith in algorithms and spreadsheets. A left-handed pitcher, Dave played for the San Diego Padres and the San Francisco Giants.  He was named an All-Star in 1983 and played with the Padres in the 1984 World Series.  In September 1988, Dravecky was diagnosed with a desmoid tumor in his left arm. He underwent surgery the following month. He returned to pitch for the Giants in August 1989 and won his first major league start of the season. In his second start, he broke his arm throwing a pitch. He retired from baseball after the season and, following a cancer recurrence, had his left arm amputated in 1991.  Following his baseball career, Dravecky became a motivational speaker and author. Episode two of the NYS Halls of Fame Podcast features New York State Baseball Hall of Fame members, Dom Scala and Mike Pagliarulo with hall of fame worthy stories and hosts Rene LeRoux, Jeff Cohen, and Leonard Aberman Dom Scala played in the minor leagues before making the decision to become a coach and in 1978 Dom earned a World Series Championship with the New York Yankees while working as their bullpen coach.  As Head Coach of the Adelphi University Panthers from 2003-2021, Dom has seen dozens of his former players drafted or signed to professional contracts.  In 2019 Coach Scala had an unprecedented season, clinching his 400th win at Adelphi University and being named the North East 10 Coach of the Year.  In 2021, Dom was inducted into the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame. Mike Pagliarulo aka Pags is a former Major League Baseball player and was inducted into the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame in 2020.  During his Major League Baseball career he played for the New York Yankees, San Diego Padres, Minnesota Twins, Baltimore Orioles and Texas Rangers and in Nippon Professional Baseball for the Seibu Lions.  Pags was the starting third baseman for the 1991 World Series winning Minnesota Twins. Former Major League Baseball pitcher, Steve Trachsel and Chef Jason Morse with help from pitmaster, Doug Scheiding, sling a heaping helping of baseball and barbecue talk on episode 323 Steve Trachsel was a Major League pitcher for 16 years.  Known primarily for his time with the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets, he also played for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the Toronto Blue Jays, and the Baltimore Orioles.  He first joined us on episode 127 and then again on episode 143 during which he discussed a masterful gem he threw against the Boston Red Sox as he outdueled Pedro Martinez.  In this appearance we discuss the game he pitched on August 26, 2005 as he returned to the rotation after an injury and beat the San Francisco Giants 1-0.  The one run was supplied by David Wright's solo home run in the second inning.  Steve is a huge fan of barbecue and we are joined by Pitmaster, Doug Scheiding as all of us talk baseball and barbecue.  Chef Jason Morse aka Chef J had his first experience grilling and smoking meats when he was a Boy Scout.  His passion was further stoked during childhood visits to the Hawaiian island of Kauai, where his grandfather served in the U.S. Army, exposing him to a culture that honors fire-smoked cuisine.  As a teenager, Jason was frying up tortillas at a Mexican restaurant and honing his knife skills at a steakhouse in the suburbs of Minnesota.  Jason then pursued a culinary degree at Johnson & Wales University.  Chef J serves as Ace Hardware’s national chef spokesperson and BBQ expert.  He also runs a culinary consulting business, 5280 Culinary.  He has led Colorado Proud campaign initiatives to promote the quality of locally produced meats and agriculture.  Chef J led a healthy cooking education program for nearly 70,000 Denver, Colorado kids. Episode 322 features Big Green Egghead, Captain Ron and former Major League Baseball player and current college baseball coach Frank Catalanotto Ron Dimpflmaier aka Captain Ron is taking the adage, "If you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life" and incorporating it into his career path.  As a representative for the Big Green Egg, Ron travels, cooks barbecue on his favorite cookers, and meets people who want to talk food.  His endearing personality makes him a perfect representative for the cooker which has developed a devoted fanbase.  We met Captain Ron at the National BBQ Festival where he was cooking and entertaining for large crowds. Frank Catalanotto is a former Major League Baseball player and the current head baseball coach for Hofstra University.  Frank played for the Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers, Toronto Blue Jays, Milwaukee Brewers, and New York Mets.  In his career, he played all infield and outfield positions except shortstop and centerfield.  He then went on to be the head baseball coach of the NYIT Bears and is the current head coach for the Hofstra Pride, leading the Pride to its first-ever NCAA tournament apearance in 2022.  Frank is a 2025 inductee into the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame. NYS Halls of Fame Podcast's Inaugural Episode With Former MLB Pitcher, David Palmer Welcome to the first episode of the NYS Halls of Fame Podcast as your hosts, Rene LeRoux, Jeff Cohen, and Leonard Aberman present interviews with members of the New York State Baseball, Basketball, and Hockey Halls of Fame.  We thank you for joining us. David Palmer was inducted into the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame in 2016.  He is a former Major League Baseball pitcher who played for the Montreal Expos, Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, and Detroit Tigers.  David played with exceptional players during his career, including Montreal Expos teammates, Gary Carter, Andre Dawson, and Tim Raines who are all members of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.  At one time David was credited for pitching a five inning perfect game which was cancelled due to inclement weather.  That accomplishment was later stricken from the record books due to a new rule requiring no hitters/perfect games to go at least nine innings.  David shares great stories and is a perfect guest for the show's first episode.   Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
