Welcome to our very first Bite-sized episode from our Emerging series! This is a mini episode where I'll be talking about some of the skills and tips that have helped our interviewees from the creative and performing arts. Last week I spoke to the lovely art student and poet Elaoise Benson about how she has handled having so much taken away from her as a result of the pandemic. Elaoise speaks candidly of struggling with anxiety and the many hurdles she has successfully navigated to not only cope but really thrive. In this mini episode I touch on three strategies she has used which you can use too. If you're feeling a little demotivated, a little meh or just want some inspiration, have a listen. And if you missed last week's interview with Elaoise catch up with it here too!#artstudent #pandemic #thriving #mentalhealth #wellbeing #bitesized #emerging Hosted on Acast. We are not well equipped to navigate our way through life given the unprecedented pace of change, complexity, technology shifts. We are overloaded with information, we pay attention far less and are massively distracted for most of the time. Although we have all the information and knowledge we could possibly need at our fingertips when it comes to living our lives with purpose, passion and happiness we are not effective. In this podcast I explore just why the 7 soft skills are the only ones we need to be successful and happy. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Adaptability is an attractive quality. We all like to think of ourselves as being flexible and adaptable, a team player, “going with the flow”. It means that we are not rigid or stuck and that are open to change and challenges. I think if you were to ask most people if they consider themselves to be open and adaptable, they would tell you ‘yes’. If you truly are adaptable then you are more likely to handle change with grace and ease, not be thrown by the unexpected and be a lot happier. Yet most of us are actually a lot more resistant to change than we might perceive ourselves to be. In this podcast I’ll explore why we are hard-wired to be adaptable but also why we are so resistant to change and some ways to build our adaptability skills. Hosted on Acast. As a future skill critical thinking is about complex problem-solving, originality, fluency of your ideas and active learning. It’s also about leveragingy our brain’s capacity to be creative, have ideas and truly flourish. Recent research and insights by neuroscientists are discovering that our brains can be rewired and trained each and every day and indeed throughout our lives. In this podcast I’ll be talking about how to bring critical thinking into our everyday skills so that we become much better at it and enhance everything we do as a result. Developing skills that are uniquely “human” such as active listening, caring and nurturing are key for the world of the future. These things can’t be outsourced or automated and are still going to be important for whatever job you have. Empathy is has been proven to be essential for enhancing our interpersonal relationships, overall life satisfaction and improving our ability to respond well to challenges. In this podcast I’ll be talking about how nurturing your empathy skills will supercharge all your relationships and some easy ways to get it into your day-to-day. Hosted on Acast. Well be discussing the crucial role of resilience, how education is rising up to meet these needs and why the future really is soft. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
We live in a world of fake news, in a world where we can reinvent ourselves online and fabricate our lives however we want to. If you are authentic in your actions and words, keep your commitments, take responsibility for your choices and are sincere this makes you stand out and it builds TRUST. Today I’ll be unpicking what integrity is, what it isn’t and how understanding what your values are and how to manage your time help to build it. Hosted on Acast. People with optimistic explanations of life generally feel happier and more energised to cope with obstacles, seeing them as challenges rather than failure experiences. Although of course how you feel matters, most people will respond to the world BASED on how they are feeling. However you are feeling, real optimism is about awareness and about functioning well even when you might feel sad. Instead it’s about building in positive behaviours that enable you to build and nurture your ability and your skill to be optimistic. In this podcast I’ll be exploring how you can easily build optimism into your life and be far happier as a result. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
I’m delighted to welcome Sarah Mercer to our podcast today. I first met Sarah at a conference for Business English teaching last November in Malta. And I really connected with her talk about socio-emotional competences as 21st century life skills and the key role that emotional intelligence plays. Naturally for me there was a strong link with some – possibly all – of the seven skills but I am particularly interested in Sarah’s views on self-awareness, the role of mindfulness, empathy and understanding about our strengths. When we face uncertainty, so much uncertainty around us and circumstances that are definitely outside our control we can feel less in control over our lives. As a result many people struggle with anxiety, lack of sleep, worry and even depression connected with the circumstances they face, such as job loss or insecurity, financial problems, fear of the future and other stresses including the famous FOMO – fear of missing out activated through our social media use. Being proactive is a way of feeling more in control of our lives and of our futures. In this episode I’ll discuss how taking action has a transformative effect, why we are all procrastinators and the link between being proactive and optimism and resilience. Hosted on Acast. Do you rise or do you fall in the face of adversity? Resilience is a HUGE topic right now – really high on government and education agendas. It’s an interesting skill – linked strongly with optimism and being proactive. Resilience is the ability to respond well to pressure, deal with set-backs effectively, respond well to change and challenges and, basically, bounce back. In this podcast I’ll be talking about why resilience isn’t afixed character trait but an ability and a capacity, which means it can be developed. Research suggests that people who are more psychologically resilient have higher levels of emotional stability, gratitude, purpose in life and altruism. Resilience and happiness definitely seem connected.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Social media – we are all on it every day for better or for worse. How we use social media has a huge impact on our happiness and wellbeing levels. In this episode I explore some of the latest research with you and show you some creative and different approaches to help you manage social media in positive ways to make it work for you. Doing so will really sharpen your natural critical thinking skills – something we all need to do both now and in the future! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
When we think of improv we think of jazz or comedy. In comedy improv the actors must work together to create a compelling story and plot without a script. Ingenious? Maybe – but these actors are highly trained and use techniques and principles that enable them to do this. In this podcast I’ll be exploring how you can take these sorts of principles and apply them to your own life. This will help you apply all 7 skills. Hosted on Acast. I used to have a deep fear of dogs. I avoided them all my life because as a child I was bitten by one. 3 years ago we acquired a Golden Retriever puppy named Oscar and I became a dog owner. Oscar has taught me so much about empathy. In this podcast I’ll be talking about how we can learn empathy skills in most life situations, why we absolutely must do this and how using empathy can transform our personal and professional relationships.  Hosted on Acast. Could you tell the truth for a whole day? Why should you? Why would you? Is integrity about being honest and truthful? In this podcast I’ll be exploring why we lie each and every day and why that doesn’t necessarily mean that we don’t live with integrity. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
