Listening is the first essential language skill that humans use to learn. Babies and very young children cannot read, write, or speak, but by "hearing" rich vocabulary, they are later able to reproduce language structure and vocabulary in speaking and in writing. The infant brain is developing rapidly and it is critical that intellectual stimulation is nurtured. The truth is that children cannot produce what they have not heard and/or seen. Reading is critical to their language development and this is why the Avant-garde Books Team has created this special and engaging podcast.

This educational video for kids is about baseball legend and philanthropist, Roberto Clemente who was born in Carolina, Puerto Rico in 1934. Clemente spent his entire professional career with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1955 - 1972). He was the first Hispanic baseball player to be inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1958, Clemente enlisted in the Marine Corps as a reserve infantryman. For six years until 1964, he spent his off seasons serving on duty. Clemente spent six months on active duty at Parris Island, South Carolina, and Camp LeJeune, North Carolina. He was inducted into the Marine Corps Hall of Fame in 2008. Clemente married Vera Zabala in 1964. The couple had three sons. Kwanzaa is a week-long, cultural celebration that starts December 26th and ends January 1st. During Kwanzaa, people light candles on a kinara. There are three red candles, one black candle, and three green candles. Each day of the holiday, people discuss one of the empowering principles that promotes community and unity. The seven principles of Kwanzaa are (1) umoja (unity); (2) kujichagulia (self-determination); (3) ujima (collective work and responsibility); (4) ujamaa (coperative economics); (5) nia (purpose); (6) kuumba (creativity); and (7) imani (faith). The holiday was created in 1966 by the civil rights and cultural activist, Maulana Karenga to reflect upon, commemorate, and recommit to constructive African ideals.
