Description

Comedians, actors, writers, everybody wants their "big" break, that elusive gig that will take them from being an artist with a day job to the next level. But HOW does it happen? What does it really feel like in the green room of the Tonight Show five minutes before your first TV set, or when a post goes viral and suddenly your comedy heroes are not just following you, they want to work with you? Or in theater seats while your film debuts at a major festival? Comedy writer Laurel Cummings interviews successful comedians, actors, award-winning filmmakers, producers, and other people she finds interesting to learn all about their first big gig. Each episode is about 30 minutes or less because she's busy, and knows you're busy too. Respect. Laurel talks to comedian and very nice guy Joe List whose new special “This Year’s Material” has over a million views on YouTube and covers, well, this year’s material.   Hosted and produced by Laurel Cummings. Original theme music by Benton Bohannon. Original album art by Rhiannon Blouin. Thanks for listening, and please follow Laurels Little Show on instagram and YouTube for more.
This week we top off Pride with Laurel’s interview with award-winning producer, gifted photographer, writer, and Laurel’s wonderful friend, Tony Morrison. When he’s not on his digital producer duties at the Good Morning America studios, Tony is co-hosting the D23 Inside Disney podcast interviewing the biggest stars in the Marvel Universe and beyond. He recently made waves from here to the UK when he announced his HIV status, and has since quickly been embraced as a beloved advocate and influencer. Have a listen, and don’t forget to tune into his brand new show, “Truth Be Told”. Thanks for listening, and please head to @laurelslittleshow on Instagram and our YouTube channel for more.
For the season 3 premiere, Laurel caught comedian and writer Andy Haynes (Fallon, Conan, Corden, Comedy Central) on his Apres Ski tour to talk about his first Late Night set (aptly on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, where she may or may not have fetched him a greenroom Fiji), how writing for animation differs from writing stand-up, married life with SNL writer (and last season's guest) Rosebud Baker, and the secret motto of France. Have a listen, then tee up his brand spanking new (and very funny) special "The Coward of Gramercy" on YouTube.LC NOTE: Please excuse a few audio glitches, and head to @laurelslittleshow on Instagram and our YouTube channel for more.
This week Laurel takes a break from comedy to learn about the drama writing hero's journey (see what we did there?) from old friend and talented writer Samir Mehta (Narcos, The Sinner, Fear the Walking Dead). They talk about how the Narcos writers room works, the 2007 Writers' Strike and the path from school to a staff writer position on a drama.
You know him from America's Got Talent, Conan, Last Comic Standing, and This Week at the Comedy Cellar, but do you know he got into Harvard with magic? (I still want my money back, Rick Singer) On the premiere of Season 2, Laurel learns about the dark and not so dark arts of the magic community from comedian, magician, Harvard alum, Harrison Greenbaum.
On the now infamous Election Day 2002 Part 1, Laurel talks to comedian Jacob Williams about his time on America's Got Talent, 9 seasons on MTV's Wild 'N' Out, and his high school chess team (hey, "Queens Gambit" fans). Just 2 more episodes left of season 1. Thanks for watching, subscribing on Spotify, iTunes, I Heart Radio, and generally being great!
Laurel chats with comedian and musician Isabel Hagen about her TV debut on The Tonight Show, the audition process for The Tonight Show, performing for industry and normies at Just For Laughs, and the art of getting energy from unexpected sources (like Leo, but with less private planes).
When she's not making delightful short film sendups to Sofia Coppola (see: "The Bird House" on her YouTube), comedian Mary Beth Barone is doing the Lord's Work with her Drag His Ass show aimed at connecting and supporting anyone who's ever been burned by an emotional unavailable fling (see: everyone). Take a look then check out her succinct and supremely funny deadpan standup.
IT'S OUR 25th EPISODE!!! Thanks for watching, liking, and subscribing, we really appreciate it. In Part 1 of Laurel's interview with documentary film director Erin Lee Carr, they talk about her HBO films "Mommy Dearest and Dead," about the Gypsy Lee Blanchard (too crazy to explain, watch it) case, "I Love You, Now Die," about the Michelle Carter (suicide by text) trial, "At the Heart of Gold" (about the Larry Nassar Olympic Gymnastics sex abuse scandal), and "How To Fix A Drug Scandal" (starrring my former improv teacher, Shannon O'Neill) on Netflix. Have a watch if you're into true crime, which is everybody. EDITOR'S NOTE: This interview was recorded in June 2020.
Laurel learns about the comedy hustle at the iconic Just For Laugh festival and starring in FX's "The Americans" alongside Keri Russell from today's guest, comedian Evan Williams.  Star of Amazon's "Inside Jokes," SNL writer, and hilariously acerbic comic Rosebud Baker chats with Laurel about being a Covid Bride and crafting her act.
Philadelphia born comedian Chanel talks to Laurel about opening for Michael Che and helping lovelorn OKCupid users. Chanel shares her unique perspective not just on being a rising voice in modern comedy, but on being a cop's daughter. Check back soon for Part 2, in which she concludes the story of a mentally ill child whom a police officer shot for having scissors.
In Part 2 of Laurel's interview with comedian Chanel Ali, nothing is off limits as we get into sex ed (and lack thereof), what it means to be New Black, and shitty comments in Atlantic City.
Laurel talks with the very funny Usama Siddiquee (who just moved up on America's Got Talent!). Usama cracks us up and spills the secrets of his "Cash Cab" episode. Watch Laurel trying not to be look jealous and don’t miss his cameo in Netflix’s “Inventing Anna”!
When she's not playing Beth on "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" or starring in Netflix's The Comedy Lineup," Emma Willmann makes delightful sound effects and conversation. Here's Part 1 of our interview, where we discuss her late night debut on Colbert and John Mulaney's killer suits.
Rising MTV darling Maddy Smith tells Laurel about her early days on the gritty underground roast circuit, her high-energy stand-up style, and how exactly an episode Wild 'N Out gets made. Have a listen, then YouTube the Comedy Central Roast of Alec Baldwin for which she penned jokes, and her hilariously savage Ariana Grande impression. EDITOR'S NOTE: This episode was recorded in June 2020 prior to Nick Cannon’s firing and contains strong language.
Delightfully deadpan comic Carmen Lynch and Laurel talk trolls, crafting one's on-stage persona, and answer the age old question: do you need to have been bullied as a child to do comedy, or can well-adjusted people do it too (whoever they are)? Check out at the Comedy Cellar or on her very funny albums "Dance Like You Don't Need The Money," and "Vertically Obsese," which just dropped on Spotify!
Comic and pun enthusiast Matthew Broussard explains the calculus of comedic self-deprecation and the Monday Punday origin story as he and Laurel bond over a shared knack for getting fired.
