Description

The beauty in the Bible can be challenging to appreciate, and that's where I, an enthusiastic English Major, come in. Together, we explore the dang good drama, bizarre ancient context, and creative artistry in the Bible. Taking a different angle every two weeks, we approach a Bible story through a series of fun and accessible 20-minute episodes. Then, because the best part of any good story is getting to talk about it with friends, I invite a guest to come and chat about it. If you're looking for a fresh take on familiar stories or are curious about how Biblical authors used irony, symbolism, and humor to make a point, listen and follow The Bible and the English Major today!

Welcome to this new series on Mark 5:21-34! This mini-episode is a personal introduction to one of the bravest women in the Bible: the bleeding woman found in the Gospel of Mark. What could women in the Bible have to say to the ancient historian Pliny the Elder? Probably quite a lot, as long as they aren't bleeding. Here's some historical context, on Mark 5:21-34, to help us understand the immense faith required of a desperate woman who must ask the question, 'What do I do when my religion is killing me?'Join the Conversationhttps://www.instagram.com/maren.jo.schneider https://www.facebook.com/maren.jo.schneider Learn MoreIf you would like to learn more about Maren, invite Maren to speak, or read the article versions of The Bible and the English Major visit https://marenjo.com. How do we best understand the Pharisees and scribes in the Gospel of Mark from a literary point of view? And what does the juxtaposition of one of their own with a desperate, bleeding woman tell us about taking risks, faith, and healing? With even more artistry, the writer of the Gospel of Mark uses juxtaposition, symbolism, merism, and a 6-foot party sub to make a very big point about Jesus' renewal of Israel and the faith lying at its heart. We conclude our series on Mark 5 with a conversation with Pastor Bobby Harrison from The Church We Hope For. He shares the story of his dismantling journey toward advocating for justice and equity in the church, tells a great story about his son as a framework for seeking God wholeheartedly, and explains how he relates to Jairus. Then he turns the tables on Maren to find out why she's doing all of this, anyway.Join the Conversationhttps://www.instagram.com/maren.jo.schneider https://www.facebook.com/maren.jo.schneider Learn MoreIf you would like to learn more about Maren, invite Maren to speak, or read the article versions of The Bible and the English Major visit https://marenjo.com.To learn more about Bobby Harrison and The Church We Hope For, visit them at https://thechurchwehopefor.comSupportTo financially support The Bible and the English Major, please visit Maren’s Patreon page.https://www.patreon.com/marenjoschneider

Gospel writer John knows a thing or two about romance. His Woman at the Well story contains the same juicy narrative elements as Rachel and Jacob's betrothal in Genesis 29. Scandalous, you say? An angelic tour guide takes the prophet, Ezekiel, on a trippy journey through a restored temple gushing with Living Water. John clearly digs the imagery because he uses it over six centuries later in his story of the Woman at the Well to reveal God's groovy side. Are you Team Mary or Team Martha? Luke’s story about the two sisters has left scholars debating for centuries, leading to character analysis paralysis. Let’s get past the heroine/villain question to find out what Jesus’ “one needed thing” is. Hint: it’s not the bean dip. A properly read parable has never caused a case of the warm fuzzies. Parables were meant to confuse and disturb, to help the audience question the ways of this world and engage in the counter-cultural kingdom of God. Find out how the lawyer, so certain of his righteousness, responds to a good tweaking. NEW: SupportIf you can, please financially support The Bible and the English Major. Inspired by the Midrash of the ancient rabbis, Maren takes a crack at Biblical Fanfiction. What do you imagine the lawyer thought about Jesus' Good Samaritan parable? What if Martha heard it, too? And the bottom line question: can creativity can also be a tool in biblical interpretation? You decide.Connect on Social MediaWe love to hear from listeners.
