Description

How do our ears see? Perhaps in a brighter, more dynamic technicolour than our eyes can begin to imagine.

Ears Have Eyes is an auditory exhibition space for sound art on the radio. Artists respond to a monthly theme, making new compositions and sharing existing sound artworks on CJSW’s radio waves.

Ears Have Eyes invites local, national, and international artists to share auditory aesthetics, spatial soundscapes, spoken word, experimental music, and other recorded media.

GRIEF: part 2 This is Part 2 of our GRIEF episode. Many of the works on today’s program commemorate those who have transitioned beyond life, but our GRIEF episode explores something broader and deeper than death. There is a sublingual thread tying the rawest expressions of grief with the creation of sound. There are no words strong enough to support the weight of grief. Grief is something you feel involuntarily, almost like an automatic response – a sound that leaks out of you. It is beyond our control or conscious understanding. And yet we all share this human experience. Grief is the price we pay for love. ARTISTS: An-Ting Cameron Naylor Henry McPherson Hui Kim Mattia Benedetti Omar Reyna Philip Mantione sunfear EARS HAVE EYES is available on CJSW in Calgary/Mohkinstsis, Golden Co-Op Radio in Golden (BC) and NAISA Radio in South River (Ontario). GRIEF: in it March is one of the worst months in Calgary. Winter darkness still falls across the land, but gone is the glittering white twinkle of those early snow-falls. We are in the long, interminable, muddy stretch towards Spring. This is a particularly dangerous time for human creatures: statistically, the highest rates of death in Canada transpire between December and March each year. On a philosophical level, March marks a pre-Spring mourning unfolding in each of us – grief as an expression of radical change. Many of the works on today’s program commemorate those who have transitioned beyond life, but our GRIEF episode explores something broader and deeper than death. There is a sublingual thread tying the rawest expressions of grief with the creation of sound. There are no words strong enough to support the weight of grief. THE VOICE WITHIN: solo, sonic, singular This month features a collection of experimental music, spoken word, field recordings, and soundscapes responding to our human capacity to create alone. Whether literally creating a new solo projects, travelling alone across vast geographies, or losing and finding one’s (internal) voice, our February episode invites you to listen – from your own perspective – to work made from the singular perspective of each acoustic artist on today’s show. NUM: a feature For the first episode of 2026, we’re shifting our focus to highlight one local duo, NUM. Comprised of sound artists, electroacoustic musicians, and multimedia artists, Maryam Sirvan and Milad Bagheri, NUM originated in Northern Iran. After studying in Georgia, Maryam & Milad moved to Calgary to continue their academic explorations several years ago. At the end of 2025, they released an album called “Seas Coming for Me.” This album was recorded at the National Music Centre with support from Calgary Arts Development. Our episode today follows Maryam & Milad’s journey through sound – music as a resistance, a collaborative life-long action, and a gateway to new worlds. We’re featuring work from their latest album, alongside older work that contextualizes this album. ARTISTS: Chris Cresswell & 315 Ensemble Clare M. RADIO WHISPERS: haunting radio & radio hauntings // Part 2 While the Northern Hemisphere enters into a festive winter season, we’re returning to the spooky spirit of Autumn for Part 2 of RADIO WHISPERS. This month's episode features experimental music, spoken word, and sound art leaning into the ethereal hauntings of radio. Artists explore the strange space between frequencies, literally or metaphorically, covering everything from field recordings on shortwave radio to spooky spoken word stories about the life (and death) of domestic silk moths. RADIO WHISPERS: haunting radio & radio hauntings // Part 1 We took a brief break in October to make space on CJSW for coverage of Calgary’s municipal election. This month we’re back with a belated Halloween episode featuring experimental music, spoken word, and sound art leaning in to the ethereal hauntings of radio. We’re featuring artists exploring the strange mysteries unearthed when wandering between frequencies, literally or metaphorically. We received so many submissions, we’ve decided to split this theme into two episodes. This is Part 1 of 2. WANDERING SOUNDS: ruminations for the end of a season This is our last episode of the Summer, and we’ve programmed a languid listening excursion through the sound-based work of 3 artists, each with an extended sound piece. This episode is intended as a sprawling meditation, allowing the listener a slower, more expansive listening experience. As we move between seasons, we allow ourselves one last stretch through the warmth of Summer into the cool swirl of Autumn. EMERGENCE: journeys through water, matter, and form For our languid August episode, we’re listening to two projects by artists reflecting on ancient Greek mythology and philosophy: The Odyssey by Homer, as seen through the eyes of Calypso, and Hyle & Eidos, understandings of matter and form first posited by Aristotle. These works are watery, abstract, mesmerizing, and elemental ~ a perfect end to Summer. A SHAPE IN THE CLOUDS: soft and sonorous, soaring skyward // Part 2 For our June & July episodes, we’re turning our eyes (and ears) skyward for an exploration of atmospheric sounds, ambient music, and cloudy noises. Part 2 deconstructs abstract and literal relationships with the theme, ranging from “mysterious powers,” sonic wanderlust, spatial compositions, and dreamlike worlds, to literal field recordings of jet-planes flying across the sky. A fun note: this program was edited in an airplane while we were, quite literally, "a shape in the clouds." THE SOUND OF HOPE: edge of darkness, brink of light For many, the last few months have felt hopeless. The cold & dark of winter, groundswell of totalitarianism, and regular seasonal malaise has left us straining to find anything good to hold onto. As Winter creeps towards the Spring, we’ve been seeking The Sound of Hope. Artists, musicians, and sound-based practitioners from around the world were invited to share their own interpretation of this sound, reflecting the place where their optimism resides and flourishes in an ever-expanding ripple of positive possibilities. STATIC/SHIFT: sonic shapes emerging from the snow For our February program, we are leaning into the double-meanings of “snow,” both as a natural weather phenomenon of Canadian winters, and a type of static or visual noise. The static on a television set is ever-shifting, like a blizzard. On today’s program, sonic forms vibrate in and out of being and familiar sounds hide in the static; artists share sounds that reveal themselves as you listen, emerging like shapes melting through the snow. SUBLIMINAL/SUBLINGUAL: under the ears & inside the tongue For the first episode of the new year, we’re exploring the strange and hazy sounds floating just out of focus – somewhere on the fringe between science fiction, tongue twisters, and the fantastic phonic frequency that can only be heard and not told. We’ve included Abstractions, stories, and experiments, including (but not limited to) experimental music, spoken word, fantasy, fiction, and more. FEASTING: delicious sounds for hungry ears For many, December is a month of feasting. For our last episode of 2024, we invited local, national, and international sound artists to submit delicious sounds, ranging from literal recordings of food being prepared and consumed, to the strange, hyper-specific noises that they just love. We’re setting the table for a veritable feast of strange, scrumptious, and occasionally disgusting sound art – this month, variety is the spice. MORE THAN HUMAN: voices beyond our understanding This month, we’re listening to the voices of animals, plants, and ecosystems outside our normal human understanding. From the barking of street dogs, to the whispering mycelial networks of forests, to the soundscapes of marine life in the world’s busiest sea, we’re sharing sound art that amplifies the “more than human” world – a phrase coined by ecologist-philosopher David Abram in 1996 to describe the living world beyond human beings. BELLWETHER: sounds at the edge of foreseeable futures A bellwether is an omen, soothsayer, or predictor of the future. For our September episode of EARS HAVE EYES, we’re responding to the changing seasons through an exploration of anticipation, anxiety, and sound as an agent of foreshadowing for things to come. From climate anxiety to rising waters, unidentified noises to literal bells, local, national, and international sound artists joined us in interpreting Bellwethers for today’s program.
