Why did kings and queens have spectators on their wedding night? Who had the very first boob job? And did our ancestors have their unmentionables pierced?
Join historian, Kate Lister, Betwixt the Sheets as she unashamedly roots around the topics which seem to have been skipped in history class.
Everything from landmark LGBTQ+ court cases, to political scandal, to downright bizarre medieval cures for impotence. The etymology of swear words, gender bias in medicine, and satanic panic and cults - there’s nothing off limits.
She'll be bed-hopping around different time periods; from ancient civilisations, to the middle ages, to renaissance and early modern...right up to now.
You’ll laugh, you’ll wince, and you’ll ask yourself how much has actually changed.

thank you, once again, for a super podcast 👏
Awesome episode! All of the bizarre, arrogant stuff men invented about our genitalia made me reflect on how learning about women's history & feminism has been particularly helpful for my knowledge/appreciation of my body/sexuality, but studying feminism had the opposite effect when it comes to men. Now that Utunderstand the way trad. masculinity works within the patriarchal hierarchy, I can't stop seeing how much that men do/say goes back to their fear of women and all things feminine.
Kate, how about an episode about Sporus, the boy Nero had castrated and married?
When I 1st ran across "Q" as an orientation (as in LGBTQ) years ago, it supposedly meant "questioning" just as mentioned here for the question mark. I think most ppl these days think it stands for queer, so maybe it has morphed, but I've always thought of it as questioning.
I HAD Barbie and Sindy in the 60s/70s. I perceived Sindy as English and " real" with her flat chest and big thighs, whereas I saw Barbie as American, therefore an unreal glamorous, fantasy figure.
your link to the podcast award failed. would be happy to vote
Sarah Bernhardt was a French actress not British as the guest stated.
