In the great pantheon of movie monsters - vampires, Frankenstein, werewolves, zombies - there is one classic archetype that has gotten a LOT of mileage out of being a bit one-note – the Mummy. They are pretty meh, if you really think about it. Definitely not scary. Basically, mummies are just slow, undead creatures wrapped in dirty rags who are more sad than frightening. Yet, of the major cinematic monsters, they remain near the top for reasons we can’t explain. And there are a LOT of mummy movies out there, but only about 3 are worth watching… and we don’t mean the recent failed attempts by Tom Cruise or Lee Cronin. If you have to ask “What is a Creepypasta?” then the recent horror/thriller phenomenon from A24 Films - “Backrooms” - may not be for you. But even if you don’t follow internet trends, know that this movie is, if nothing else, one giant vibe. If that vibe is dread, disorientation, failure and entropy, but in an endless maze of empty yellow rooms under the persistent dead hum of faded fluorescent lighting. In that regard, “Backrooms” may be the perfect horror metaphor for middle age. That’s what it REALLY gets right. But it is those other liminal spaces of the story that we appear to have qualms with here. Are we the right demographic? Maybe not. This week on The Magnificently Huge Podcast, Brian, Chris, and Eric travel back to the impossibly distant world of 2019—a simpler time when our biggest concerns were whether Cats looked too horrifying and whether Martin Scorsese was going to make us sit still for three and a half hours. And holy shit, 2019 had some movies. We look back at a year that gave us Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Jojo Rabbit, Knives Out, Ford v Ferrari, Joker, Avengers: Endgame and approximately seventeen hours of Robert De Niro sitting down very carefully in The Irishman. Hanging over all of it is the knowledge that these movies arrived during the final full year before everything got very, very weird. Audiences were still packing theaters. Streaming hadn't completely swallowed Hollywood. People casually touched their own faces in public. Nobody had a favorite brand of mask. Death to Smoochy is a misunderstood, underappreciated classic so far as we’re concerned, and anyone who says otherwise is damaged goods. So say us! This 2002 comedy directed by Danny DeVito and starring Robin Williams, Edward Norton and Catherine Keener disappeared almost immediately after it was released to a chorus of negative reviews. Roger Ebert himself named it The Worst Movie of the Year (which is something, considering that ridiculous Rollerball remake had also come out back then). In short, Ebert and the rest were flat out wrong, kids, and that is a hill we are willing to die on. We love this one so much, we just had to discuss. But is it a true black-comedy or not?
