Could this be a (rede)sign of things to come? I sat down this week with Nebraskan VexHead Luke Schroer, whose interest in redesigning flags goes back to 2021 when the state capital of Lincoln held a contest to redesign their city flag. Luke's design didn't win, but it started him on a journey to eventually redesign flags for all 50 U.S. states and territories, as well as several fantastic upgrades for city flags around the country. His redesigns on every level show how good flags can be both distinct... and related. SHOW NOTES incl. transcriptBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/flagged-for-content--5732422/support.
The craic's 90 this week as I sit down with Vexhead Evan Stewart (Rowhouse Vexillology Project) to talk all about the peculiar state of flags in Northern Ireland. We go into different sporting associations' (and video games'!) flag choices, different ways of marking territory and how they've evolved, and as always, talk about hydrophobic paint.SHOW NOTES HERE!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/flagged-for-content--5732422/support.

We held a live roundtable episode today on 3/11, two days after the Newtah Flag became official. It was a blast just like the Minnesota one in December, and I plan on doing more of these! Guests are Michael Green from  @FlagsForGood , Tara Stark from the Keystone Flag, Erik Nystul, a Utahn who was instrumental in the change, and Utah Senator Dan McCay, who sponsored the legislation to get the ball rolling. Thanks to all who participated in any way, shape, or form! Y'all make this show great.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/flagged-for-content--5732422/support.
The 2024 Flag March Madness tournament is upon us, and to wave the green flag on this race to the top of the pole, I sat down with the legend behind it all, Rob Quebral of the Twitter account @FlagsThtGoHard. We had a great chat about starting the account, how he picks the flags (and some other behind-the-scenes details), and, of course, the 2024 Tournament. It's shaping up to be a banner year.Be sure to check the show notes HERE for better-quality versions of some images! All the show links HEREBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/flagged-for-content--5732422/support.
We did it, VexHeads! It's Episode 50! To celebrate, I invited Frédéric Lindboe back on the show to not only give us some spicy new under- and overrated flags, but to debut my new Family Flag he created for my wedding and beyond! Speaking of which, I'm beyond honored that he designed it and it may be one of my new favorite flags, full stop. Don't miss this thing. Plus, Frédéric takes us on a tour of his personal flag, his wife's, and THEIR family flag that had a big role in their big day.Don't forget to check out the SHOW NOTES here, they're more organized every go-aroundFrédéric on Norwegian podcast "198 Land"Frédéric's InstagramLinktreeDiscordTikTokInstagramTwitterMerchBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/flagged-for-content--5732422/support.
Hear, hear, VexHeads: The March Pursuivant Extraordinary & Honorary Vexillologist has entered the chat! That's right, Philip Tibbetts, the world's only (we looked it up) state-appointed vexillologist, pays a visit to tell us all about the Lyon Court and his role in it. We talk all about the newest Scottish flags and their adoption process, start to finish. We'll get into a little bit of heraldry, an emotional tale of flags bringing people together, and how absence can make our vexi-hearts grow fonder. Plus, a nice whiskey to cap it off. What's... what's up and what's down, VexHeads?! I truly don't know. This week I had Alex Tomberlin on the show to teach me about the show I run. And I'm not being sarcastic--Alex has an encyclopedic knowledge about this thing, and I'm truly and visibly flattered. We talk a good deal about his Flag Wars project on Tumblr, which you should absolutely check out and vote in, and then Alex drops some truth bombs on me about the show that I had no idea about. This one is really fun. They all are. Are you still reading this? Reply with "Wow what a great episode!" if so. Wh*t's *p, V*xH**ds?! This week I sat down with Graham Houser for... well, he can explain it better than I can. Let's just say he brought with him a slideshow entitled "Sexy Vexi Flags" and leave it at that. This one's obviously not for the kids, but you do you, Vexillantes!SHOW NOTES W/ SLIDESHOW HERE!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/flagged-for-content--5732422/support.

Anong meron, y'all?! This week I'm packing up and taking the VexHeads over the mountains into North Carolina yet again. We have Elaijah Lapay and his green screen here in the studio this week to chat about teaching a Vexillology class at a(n attempted) football school. We get into his roots both in the Philippines and the American South, which gives a different lens to look through than usual. Then, we get into what it means to have a "favorite flag". Who am I to disagree?Välkommen, VexHeads! This week we're headed up to Sweden, to learn a thing or two about that country's heraldry and how that translates to flags. We have Max (u/Smiix on reddit, @new_vexillology on IG) here to help us wade through the varying ways Swedes are updating their flags, if even just on a personal level. Then, we get into Nordic Cross flags, which you know I was excited about. G'day, VexHeads! This week, we head Down Under to the Magical Land of Oz, to chat with Golden Wattle creator, Jeremy Matthews. Jeremy runs the Flags for Australia Instagram (@flagsforaustralia) and, along with many other Aussies, has been pushing for a new, more representative flag for 'Straya. Then, we get into a few more designs for the states and territories, using the "be related" principle. Plus, a look at the Aboriginal Flag and its history and meaning. Beth sydd i fyny, VexHeads? I had the immense hono(u)r this week of hosting Mr Flag himself, Charles Ashburner, FFI! We have a chin wag about everything from Charles' time as the CEO of the UK's Flag Institute to his founding of Mr Flag, the UK’s top ranked flag brand. Obviously, we get to talking about a rivalry between two Welsh cities while we're at it, as well as the intricacies of sewing little red dragons on flags.LINKTREE with everythingThe Patreon!Show notes/graphics HEREBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/flagged-for-content--5732422/support.

Hey VexHead Family! Join me this week as we haul out the bigger table that seats 5, as this week's episode is a crossover with A Kiwi, Two Brits & a Yank ( @flagsession , @Flagsin50 , past guest Joe Billips). We have a good chat about some not-so-savory flags from history that should probably stay there, and go over the various reasons they keep rearing their ugly heads. Maybe don't watch this one at work! Up to you!Show notes/Transcript HEREBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/flagged-for-content--5732422/support.
Get ready for a jump into hyperspace this week as I invite David Davis to the virtual studio to chat about some high-flyin', sci-fi-in' space flags! We blast off into David's comic "Cosmic Dash" and get a glimpse into what it's like making flags for different factions in a galaxy far, far... abroad. Hola from the Great North, VexHeads! This week I sit down with Raquel Maestre, a Spanish comic based in Montréal, because ¿por qué no, eh? We trek all across Canada to bring you some of the most... let's say "interesting" flags, from Calgary to Fort Whoop-Up (yes, you read that right). We've got a fast-food-looking flag, an American QR code of a flag, and a dormouse that never says die. Bear arms, lion arms, stag arms... We've got 'em all in this one, folks! I had the pleasure of sitting down with Scottish heraldry specialist and vexillology enthusiast Scott Thomson (@saoradair) to chat about the interplay between the two, and what makes Scottish heraldry specifically so unique. Scott tells me all about the Lion King... er... Lord Lyon and his Court, the official process for registering arms, and some common misconceptions (especially here in the U.S.) about heraldry writ large. This is a great show if you like flags but don't want to get too bored hearing about them. They keep it entertaining.
