Anxious, afraid and better than ever, I awaited the setting of the sun. That evening marked thirteen days since I had survived a werewolf attack. My hearing had remarkably improved to astonishing levels. The dripping faucet in the bathroom came to sound like fat droplets of rain plummeting onto pavement. Even when I was on the other side of the house, the sound was crystal clear. The sirens of police cars produced a loud and sharp sound that was very painful to my sensitive ears. When I heard the sirens, a base urge to cry out built up within me. Had the sirens blared any longer than they did, I suspect that a terrible headache would have taken hold. The change in my hearing wasn’t the only remarkable change either. At night, I could see things that I had never before been able to see without a flashlight. It was the summer of 1989. What might have otherwise been a whimsical summer break, became the kind of nightmare that you only read about happening to other people. That particular summer was unusually hot and humid. Summers in New York’s Hudson Valley were typically fairly mild. Most days, the temperature ranged from the 80’s to low 90’s but that summer was different. Several sweltering heatwaves oppressed us with days of temperatures in the mid to upper 90’s. Wanting to play outside but not wanting to roast, we sought out adventures in the nearby woods to find some comfort in the shade of the trees. However, it was in the shade of the trees that Gator lurked.

Have you ever had a nightmare that was so scary, that you slept with the lights on? Have you ever had vivid recurring nightmares? Have you ever been afraid to go to sleep at night? I have. Folklore from various cultures around the world and across time offer explanations for where nightmares and night terrors come from. Though the names and the physical appearances of the creatures responsible for these frightful phenomena may vary, the lore generally agrees that they are a type of supernatural being or spirit. In Germanic folklore, the mare is the name of the malevolent spirit that is said to sit on and ride a person while giving them nightmares when they go to bed. In fact, this terrifying spirit is where the “mare” in nightmare comes from. In ancient Greece, a daimon named Epiales caused nightmares. In ancient Persia, nightmares were attributed to divs. In some of the lore from the Christian world, nightmares and sleep paralysis were blamed on witches and on the souls of women who were to be damned. Whether human, goblin or demon, supernatural powers and abilities were at the root of all these legends. Although science now offers physiological and psychological explanations for nightmares and sleep paralysis, could it be that there really is a supernatural source behind these frightful events? What if the varying folklore around nightmares are based on one real, terrifying, sinister, inhuman spirit?

Fireworks and the Fourth of July go together like the Stars and Stripes of the American flag. The Fourth was always one of my favorite holidays. What’s not to like about it? When Independence Day comes, it means that school’s out, the sun is staying up longer, the temperature is rising, girls shed their bulky winter clothing and a fun vacation is either underway or on the horizon. Fireworks were something that I always enjoyed and I had never questioned the safety of any particular place that hosted a Fourth of July event. That was a mistake that I’ll never make again. Small towns can harbor big secrets. Beware of fireworks in small towns. I still can’t believe what happened. What I saw and experienced in that small town was extremely shocking, horrific, wicked and twisted.
