Episode 21 - Shanelle

2022-11-1101:38:0810

Lyn's oldest daughter, Shanelle Dawson, walked into a Sydney courtroom and spoke from the heart about the killing of her mother, the selfishness of her father, and the ongoing damage to her life as a result of the murder. Shanelle's extraordinary victim impact statement, delivered by her through tears, sorrow and anger, brought witnesses and even court staff to tears. Lyn's siblings, Greg Simms and Pat Jenkins, shared their pain too, as Justice Ian Harrison weighed the sentence he will impose on convicted killer Chris Dawson, 40 years after Lyn's death. “A brilliant piece of writing.” That’s the verdict of acclaimed author Matthew Condon on Justice Ian Harrison’s 238-page judgment. Our in-depth analysis of the decision begins with the lie that brought Chris Dawson's defence undone: a call – supposedly made by his wife, Lyn – to  the Northbridge Baths on January 9, 1982. Hedley, Claire, David, and Matthew also take a closer look at the evidence of JC, turning up damning details of how Dawson would buy the teenage student chocolate before they had sex in his car. The convicted killer’s sex with JC continued in his school office, at his university, his twin brother’s home and in his own home when Lyn was in the shower or asleep. We revisit comments by the former Director of Public Prosecutions, Nicholas Cowdery QC, in 2018 that Lyn could still be alive, that shocked her family. And Hedley and Claire meet The Honourable Geoffrey Davies, a former judge of the Queensland Court of Appeal, who says it’s hard to understand how it took 40 years to prosecute. Hedley Thomas is a hero. Full stop. I hope the students who were violated by those disgusting teachers are able to get justice, and are able to find healing and peace 💗

This case is just the tip of the iceberg of sexual assault during the 70's and 80's. I had a teacher in primary school (Years 4-5) who would run his fingers up the back of my legs while marking my work. He would run his fingers around the edges of my underpants. I wasn't the only one. A lot of the pupils referred to him as a "sex maniac" - probably the only way we knew to describe this as kids. Adults said we should not show such disrespect for our teacher. I regret sincerely not reporting him, but I was concerned, even at age 10, of the repercussions for his son who was in my year 6 class. Mr Mann came into our classroom and totally humiliated his son (I can't remember why) in front of the whole class and the Year 6 teacher. His son could not help but cry and then his father berated him for crying. I have so much regret that I did not stand up and confront Mr Mann. Later I had a total lech of a Year9-10 English teacher who told me personally that he was "fascinated by sex", gave us a

I get the impression that the judge is just trying to be conservative in his acceptance of evidence of Lyn’s murder in order to circumvent any appellate court overturning the conviction. It was probably a smart legal decision, though I wish he could make it clear that his excluding the evidence doesn’t necessarily mean it didn’t happen.

I’d be LIVID if my testimony was dismissed by the Judge in such a cavalier manner! Is he really suggesting that ALL those women were lying!?! And…I bruise like a peach - one knock - and two seconds later - massive bruise! That Judge might like to speak to a doctor before making silly comments like that…

Did his solicitor brother really just say that lots of women abandon their children never to be seen again? I'd counter that actually lots of women are killed so it looks like they've abandoned their children and are never seen again because they're in the ground.

I guess it’s better late than never, but he’s effectively lived out the most quality part of his life. Seen his kids grow up. Just ashame it took so long to get it right.

I am so relieved for Lynnette's family and friends, they deserved justice after their long ordeal, and to finally see Chris Dawson behind bars for what he did to their beloved Lynn. I fear Chris may be too much of a narcissist to admit guilt, but I pray he eventually confesses to where her body is, so at the very least her loved ones can lay her to rest where they wish her to be. Bless everyone who helped bring about the guilty verdict❤️
