You know how a total stranger can rub you the wrong way? You can feel put off by them, even if there's no obvious reason for it. Fun fact: In the early days of my Yoga Teacher Training, we had to do this really uncomfortable exercise in which all 25 of us walked around a room without talking. After about a minute, we put our hand on the shoulder of someone who "rubbed us the wrong way" — someone we were triggered by, for some reason. Then we did the same thing with someone we felt comfortable around. (I repeat: This was uncomfortable! Who wants people to know what you think of them, especially if it's negative?) But the reflection was: "What is it in each of these people that I see in myself?" Because in reality, everyone is a mirror to you. Everything you can see in other people, you can see in yourself. And if something you see triggers you in a negative way, it's something you (probably subconsciously) don't like about yourself. This episode is about shining a light on those subconscious thoughts, so you don't have to be at their whim anymore — and so you can stop being triggered by your teen. Today's guest, Psychotherapist and Coach TJ Matton, is sharing what play really is, and why everyone - adults included - needs it! She defines "play" to clarify that it's not just one kind of behavior, but a state of being in the body. And it's a primal drive, just like hunger, thirst, and sleep. While we can't avoid this drive in our bodies, culturally, we really suppress play - which is why people need help re-engaging it. Listen to find out: What the play state has to do with learning, safety, and fear What happens in the nervous system during the play state How parents can best help their teens engage in the play state (without accidentally pushing them into the fight/flight state) Why ask "When's the last time you felt free" and what to do with your answer What life-changing benefits you'll get when you have more play in your life! -- Apply to work with me Join my free parent group for connection and parenting tips. -- About TJ TJ Matton is a social worker, psychotherapist, coach, and educator focused on helping adults learn to liberate their minds and bodies through play. In this episode, we delve into the impact of having a narcissist in your life, how to navigate co-parenting with a narcissist, and how to support your teen when they've developed a relationship with a narcissist. Laura explains the two things that make a narcissist a narcissist: They use harmful tools to get their needs met They lack the ability to have self-awareness or empathy for the person in front of them This naturally presents a challenge for people in any kind of relationship with narcissists. They feel emotionally attacked — they're sent into fight/flight mode — they're trying to survive and get their needs met. This means they're more likely to people-please the narcissist, just to make things calm and peaceful again. Over time, they can end up in a whole quagmire of terrible feelings and confusion. In this episode: What to do to support your teenager when you know their other parent's narcissism is impacting them A good approach to parenting if you're still married to and/or living with a narcissistic partner The best responses to seeing your teen develop a relationship with a narcissist (and what not to do) -- Join Jennifer's free group for parents of teenagers for more tips and support. Schedule a complimentary consultation with Jennifer to learn more about my programs and together, we’ll decide if coaching is the next right step for you and your family. -- About Laura: Laura Bytheway is a Certified Life Coach specializing in helping her clients reach their impossible goals while dealing with their impossible person. If your Middle Schooler is struggling to find friends, is being isolated from the friends they have, or is in the middle of a friendship transition, this episode is for you. So many of my clients struggle with friendships: Keeping them, finding them, finding the right ones. If your teen doesn't have close friends — if they don't feel like they have a group they belong to — it can be really isolating, and their self-esteem can take a hit. In this episode, we explore exactly why Middle School is such a challenging time for friendships, including important data from multiple studies. And I offer 7 Solutions for you to help your teen respond to those challenges and make friends. So why is Middle School present such challenges for making or keeping friends? Bodies, brains and social skills are all changing, and all at different rates. It can be really challenging for teens to find someone at their similar level. 25% of 5th-8th Graders consider popularity to be more important than friendships, which can really tear friendships apart. Confidence is at a low point in adolescence, with girls' confidence dipping by as much as 30% between ages 8-14. Big emotions at this age, combined with a still-developing prefrontal cortex, can result in some irrational and impulsive behavior — which can affect your teen's ability to make or keep friends. What can you do to help your teen make friends? Help them build social skills (show an interest in others, active listening, being kind) Direct their focus away from themselves and onto others to lower stress and increase their ability to interact and connect Encourage them to pursue their hobbies and interests, which can help them meet like-minded people Help them look outside their immediate social circle — to strike up conversations with new people or get to know their friends' friends Suggest they text or DM people on weekends, to start bridging the gap between being "school friends" and outside-of-school friends Talk to a Guidance Counselor, who has a pulse on the student population and can help make connections Reach out to me! Helping Middle Schoolers feel more confident is one of my specialties, and I have a new program designed specifically to help this age group. -- Join my free parent group Apply to work with me Follow me on Instagram -- Episode mentioned in today's podcast: 5 Ways to Build Confidence
