Cinema Classics Number 23 - "This is my life! It always will be! Nothing else! Just us, and the cameras, and those wonderful people out there in the dark!" Cinema Classics is back for 2026! In a very apt choice we're looking at classic cinema reflecting on classic cinema this month, as we head down to Sunset Boulevard — Billy Wilder’s venomous, melancholic love letter to Hollywood and one of the most iconic films of the Golden Age. Regular host Michael is joined by stalwart returning guest and fellow first-time viewer Tobi to discuss Wilder’s refusal of subtlety, the film’s ruthless focus and moral ambiguity, and how its heightened dialogue and stylised performances blur the line between tragedy, black comedy, and outright horror. From its famously fatalistic opening to an ending that fully commits to madness, we explore how Sunset Boulevard is a film about illusion, performance, and an industry that devours its own ghosts. We also dig into the film’s meta-casting, gothic production design, dive deep into the themes, and explore why Norma Desmond isn’t meant to feel like a real person — but a movie star who never stopped acting. Is the film slow, or simply uncompromising? Are its clichés dated — or foundational? And who, exactly, is it cruelest to? Fire up your old-school projector, get nostalgic for the past and join us for our thoughts on the ultimate Hollywood fable. What a wonderful next year it's going to be! What fun we'll have! D.K's Cult Classics Episode 45 - "Tear down the wall!" Our new season of Cult Classics opens with a special episode to benefit the 'Fill the Stein' suicide prevention charity. Series 1, Episode 10 - "Because something seems impossible. We try, it doesn't work, we try again. We learn, we improve, we fail again, but better, we make friends, we learn to trust, we help each other. We get it wrong again. We improve together, then ultimately succeed. Because this is what being alive is. And it's better than the alternative. So come on, you brilliant humans. We go again and we win. Deal?" It’s that wibbly-wobbly stretch of the year when time feels a bit out of sync, so what better moment to dive into some classic Doctor Who time-loop chaos? To close out our Dalek deep-dive series, we’re ringing in the New Year a little early with Jodie Whittaker’s festive special, “Eve of the Daleks.” Host Mike has swapped the turkey sandwiches and leftover chocolates for the microphone one final time this year, joined by two fantastic returning guests for a truly international episode. From Germany comes our good friend Tobi, and calling in from the USA is our favourite filmmaker and fellow geek Michael Whaley. Our globe-spanning panel kicks things off with a Hit or Miss look at four previous festive specials before debating the best of the rest. Then it’s straight into the main event: a deep dive into “Eve of the Daleks,” covering the angry tin despots themselves, Yaz’s big reveal, the Groundhog Day-style structure, the guest stars, the criminally underused Dan Lewis, and more. We also take a peek at the critics’ reactions before offering our own highlights and final scores. So settle in, unwrap another chocolate, maybe skip the “beef and beans,” and warm up your voice for the Auld Lang Syne singalong by shouting at some Daleks as we wrap up the year with a bang. It’s not quite fireworks… but it’s definitely a celebration. Cinema Classics Number 22 - "Strange, isn't it? Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?" “Merry Christmas, you beautiful old podcast!” It's here! Our Silver Screen Christmas Special this year lands with Cinema Classics as we dive into possibly the definitive holiday movie: Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life. Host Mike “Bailey” is joined by Guardian Angel-a, Sandy “Claus”, and Rob(in) Lunt for a bumper-length festive deep dive. We kick things off by chatting through our favourite Christmas films and regular seasonal viewing before exploring the origins of It’s a Wonderful Life—from its beginnings as a self-published booklet to its historical context, legacy, possible Muppet connections, and even why some at the FBI once frowned upon it. (Bah, humbug!) We unwrap the film’s themes, the messages that resonate today, and what makes it such an enduring seasonal favourite. There’s praise for Capra’s direction, the beautifully crafted sets, its emotional score, and the grounded performances—from James Stewart’s iconic turn, to Donna Reed’s underrated heart, to Lionel Barrymore’s despicably villainous Mr. Potter, and more. Finally, we close with critical context, our favourite elements, and our traditional ratings out of five heavenly stars. So grab a mince pie, put your feet up, ring a bell for Clarence, and enjoy this Christmas cracker of an episode. Episode 137 - "As I was saying, I'm a woman and can't be taken for granted. Life's a bitch, now so am I." The Silver Screen Signal is lighting up the night sky, and that can only mean one thing: it’s time for another seasonally relevant episode of this here movie podcast. Host Mike has emerged from Wilson Manor for a December deep dive into Tim Burton’s festive, freaky, feisty superhero sequel, Batman Returns. We’ve assembled two outstanding ladies for their own returns to the podcast—and trust us, they have thoughts. First, racing in like Batwoman to rescue us once again from unreliable guests and co-hosts alike, it’s Sandy Eavenson. Joining her is a woman who has made Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman her personal life goals—Vean. Strap into your Batmobiles, folks… this one’s a doozy. Our intrepid trio digs into the troika of the Bat, the Cat, and the Penguin—what each brings to the film, who gets sidelined, who’s the most Burton-esque, and who ultimately steals the whole show. And that’s before we even touch on Max Shreck and his creepy dual relevance as both an expressionist boogeyman and the real-world villain who doesn’t need a costume. We dive deep into the film’s themes, its unforgettable visuals, Burton’s iconic direction, and the script’s evolution from early drafts to that final, unplanned proof-of-life shot of Catwoman. There’s also talk about our first encounters with the film, its cultural impact, the stellar performances, the instantly quotable dialogue, and so much more. So grab yourself a glass of milk, adjust a neon sign or two, watch out for any suspicious umbrellas, and join us—because, like Selina Kyle's answering machine, the party never stops on the Silver Screen Podcast. "One thing about living in Santa Carla I never could stomach; all the damn vampires." For the final Cult Classics of 2025, D.K. is joined by the bloodsucking Brady Bunch, as a collection of guests, old and new, descend upon the murder capital of the world to discuss Joel Schumacher's 1987 action horror 'The Lost Boys', and answer the question, would you give up your humanity for Jami Gertz? Head down to the boardwalk and join them, maybe pick up a comic book, or two. Episode 135 - "You wanna hurt me? Go right ahead if it makes you feel any better. I'm an easy target. Yeah, you're right, I talk too much. I also listen too much. I could be a cold-hearted cynic like you... but I don't like to hurt people's feelings. Well, you think what you want about me; I'm not changing. I like... I like me. My wife likes me. My customers like me. 'Cause I'm the real article. What you see is what you get." Happy Thanksgiving, or just Happy Holidays! This timely episode of Silver Screen Podcast is taking the ultimate nightmare road trip, joining Steve Martin and the late, great John Candy and breaking down John Hughes' rare adult comedy 'Planes, Trains & Automobiles'. Our "Hughes Crew" will be very familiar to anyone who caught last week's review of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, as host Mike is joined once again by Michael Whaley and Sandy Eavenson, much better companions than Del Griffith, and not a spilled beer in sight. Our Turkey Day Trio will give their favourite moments of comedy in this hilarious adventure, break down how this complements the all-important emotional heart, and discuss the importance of John Hughes' script and direction, as well as the incomparable performances of Martin and Candy. There's talk of our personal experiences and connections to the movie, how it's popularity has been a slow burn over the years and how it's increasingly become a holiday tradition, on both sides of the Atlantic. Host Mike even presents his bold thesis that it's more of a Christmas movie than a Thanksgiving one, though it's placed in the context of that holiday too. As always we wrap up with audience thoughts, conclusions and scoring. There's lots to enjoy so chuck on this episode with your turkey, or just your average Thursday dinner and don't think about the looming menace of Black Friday! Join us instead doing the Mess Around, swearing at rental agents and ultimately forming connections and getting home, one way or another. Series 1, Episode 9 - "Crush the lesser races. Conquer the galaxy. Unimaginable power. Unlimited rice pudding, et cetera, et cetera." Welcome back friends of the Doctor. It's been an uncertain time for our favourite Time Lord but with matters settled (for now) we're back with more of our classic reviews to keep the TARDIS fires burning. This month and next we'll be concluding our 2025 series of Dalek-themed episode reviews, and boy do we have a big one (and a relevant one) here right now. Releasing on the very day of Doctor Who's 62nd anniversary we're following the Seventh Doctor and Ace back to the time and place it all began, for the legendary classic serial "Remembrance of the Daleks". Host Mike has fired up the transmat and beamed in a couple of great returning guests to join him and co-host/travelling companion D.K. Firstly it's actor, raconteur and Imperial Dalek lover Cliff Chapman. And last but certainly not least, she has more opinions on the Doctor than Davros, but she loves him really, it's Jillian Speed. Our fearless foursome begin with a brief discussion of favourite Seventh Doctor stories, before the return of the titular "Hit or Miss" section. This time around we're taking in a fitting Dalek ship, an equally relevant special model of the old pepperpots, the last big anniversary specials and a recently dearly departed Doctor. Then it's off to Shoreditch where we're diving very deep into this packed story, taking in themes of racism, the folly of nostalgia, the new master manipulator Doctor, the "surprise" reveals and just why this story ranks among the best to feature the dreaded Dalek menace. We'll cover the outstanding acting, the role of Counter-Measures, which Dalek faction we prefer and even in what way "Remembrance of the Daleks" is like the Barbie movie. We conclude by opening the Subwave Network to gather audience thoughts, sharing our personal highlights and then giving conclusions and scores. So don't go getting close to any suspicious soldiers, do not call Ace small, set down the baseball bat and get ready to enjoy this dense, geeky, informative and fun podcast episode with a nice cup of tea. Maybe some sugar? Would it make a difference?... oh, let's not start all that again. Episode 134 - "Ladies and gentlemen, you are such a wonderful crowd, we'd like to play a little tune for you. It's one of my personal favorites and I'd like to dedicate it to a young man who doesn't think he's seen anything good today - Cameron Frye, this one's for you." Ohhh yeah. Welcome back film fans to a brand new episode of the Silver Screen Podcast where this week, well, we're ditching our responsibilities, having some fun and joining our friends on Ferris Bueller's Day Off. D.K is MIA, possibly on his ninth sick day (#SaveDK) so host Mike is joined by returning guests Michael Whaley and Sandy Eavenson to break down the fourth-wall breaks, the madcap adventures, the relatability vs the implausibility and the bigger themes and great character work at play in the movie. There's discussion about John Hughes' writing and direction, from the genesis of the script to how it fits within the Hughes ouevre. We'll also discuss the iconic performances; from Matthew Broderick's career-defining lead to Alan Ruck's reflection of our insecurities, right down to minor roles like Charlie Sheen's method acted cameo or Edie McClurg's scene-stealing hilarity, and much more. There's in-depth discussion about why Cameron is the most important character and why his storyline still impacts us today, even being the impetus for Ferris' actions that gives playing hookie a necessary nobility. We'll talk about how the film reflects perfect days in our younger years and captures the moments of uncertainty and doubt as we transition into adulthood. We'll also discuss our favourite jokes, best moments and personal experiences with the film. As always we end with thoughts from our audience and our conclusions, star ratings and final score. So join us and help "save Ferris" as we Twist & Shout into the review... Cinema Classics Number 21 – “And remember, my sentimental friend, that a heart is not judged by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others.” Just in time for the release of Wicked: For Good, certified Oz-head and regular host Mike Wilson gathers returning guests Nita and Tobi to click their heels together and head over the rainbow for a deep dive into the timeless 1939 classic, The Wizard of Oz. The team explores the film’s monumental cultural impact — from the infamy of the Wicked Witch of the West to the iconic dialogue, songs, and performances that hit harder than a falling farmhouse. They also unpack the troubled production, the rough working conditions, the near-misses, and even debunk the infamous “hanging Munchkin” rumour. But it’s not all dark clouds over Kansas. There’s plenty of laughter, love, and admiration for this cinematic marvel that the U.S. Library of Congress officially named “the most seen movie of all time.” Expect reflections on why the film still resonates, why the story’s been reimagined so often, and why that first burst of Technicolor still takes our breath away. We’ll look at the stunning set design and costumes, the movie’s enduring ideology, and the personal impact it’s had on us all. As always, we wrap things up with a critics’ perspective and our own highlights, conclusions, and scores. So follow the yellow brick road — or just press play — and pay no attention to that man behind the curtain. We’re off to see the Wizard!... Series 7, Episode 10 - "I don't know how I got here. I was at a seminar in Santa Barbara, the next thing you know I'm crawling around in cat shit!" Welcome back aboard, gallant podcast listeners, for this finale epilogue episode of the seventh series of Hit or Miss: Star Trek. Throughout this run, we’ve explored some of the best Bajoran and Cardassian-focused stories — and we couldn’t conclude any other way than with the definitive Cardassian tale: the Star Trek: The Next Generation two-parter “Chain of Command.” Captain Mike returns to the bridge, joined by resident Sci-Fi Queen and shift rotation regular Nita, and we’re delighted to welcome back Rick Everson after far too long away from the podcast. We open with a brief intro and the last Hit or Miss section of this season, taking in episodes of TNG and DS9, the original "Space Karen" and a briefly glimpsed ship from Strange New Worlds. The bulk of the podcast comes next, and is a deep dive into the focus episode. Expect spirited discussion about the fine lines between different command styles and bad leadership, questions over whether Picard was truly the only man who could navigate styrofoam rock, and — of course — intense talk about the incredible but deeply uncomfortable torture scenes (which some listeners may find distressing). From real-world allegory to Star Trek’s long-standing social conscience, we dig into what makes this two-parter so powerful — alongside plenty of well-earned praise for its outstanding writing and acting. To wrap things up, we share your audience thoughts and critical reflections on why “Chain of Command” remains one of Trek’s most revered episodes. Our final scores won’t surprise anyone — but let’s just say, we could be heading to maximum warp. So get comfortable, grab something more appetising than a taspar egg, and join us as we break down two of Star Trek’s finest hours. NB: Apologies for the slight audio issues on part of this episode. This week, hosts Mike & D.K. are joined once again by zombie superfan Nita — plus some fresh meat in the form of Josh — as we hit the food court, try on some fancy new accessories, and take a joyride sliding down the escalators. That’s right, we’re heading to the mall for a review of George A. Romero’s 1978 classic Dawn of the Dead. Our quartet of survivors barricades themselves in to discuss Romero’s razor-sharp allegory of consumer culture, satirical jabs at materialism and greed, the sometimes jarring tonal swings between horror and comedy, and the rich blend of character drama and tragedy. Mike dives into the film’s three different cuts — including a deep dive into the extended “Cannes Cut” and touching on Dario Argento’s European version (Zombi) — including how the latter led to the bizarre tangle of international sequel lines and conflicting titles. D.K. digs into the film’s production history, the genesis of the idea, original scripted ending and spotlights Tom Savini’s groundbreaking gore and zombie FX (along with the one decision he’s admitted regretting). Expect a thoughtful discussion on how the film impacted us all, favourite and least-loved moments, deeper critical analysis, and more. So grab your shopping cart, raid the back rooms, and resist the pull of nihilism as you tune in — this episode hits harder than a helicopter blade scalping or a machete to the skull. Cinema Classics Number 19/Living Dead Crossover part 1 of 3 - "They’re coming to get you, Barbra…" Spooky season is here, and Silver Screen is kicking it off with something big: a crossover deep dive into George A. Romero’s legendary Living Dead Trilogy. This week we're kicking things off on Cinema Classics. Mike and D.K. are joined by our own Sci-Fi/Scream Queen and zombie fangirl "Nita of the Living Dead" to tackle the one that started it all: Night of the Living Dead (1968). From its scrappy independent origins to its seismic cultural impact, we explore how Romero’s debut redefined horror, created the modern zombie, and still shocks nearly six decades later. We dig into the film’s production, themes, performances, legacy—and decide if it still deserves its reputation as a cornerstone of horror cinema. Board up the windows and doors, stay out of the cellar and join us as we enter the darkest night... Episode 126 - "I have a feeling this is going to be just delicious." Benvenuti! A warm welcome, faithful friends, to a brand-new episode of the Silver Screen Podcast. This time we’ve reassembled our “Discord Crew”: regular host Mike alongside returning guests Adrienne, Sandy, and Tobi. Adrienne and Sandy have chosen one of their all-time favourites for us to look at — Moonstruck (1987). But will first-time viewers Mike and Tobi fall under its spell as strongly? We’ll be breaking down the making of the film in our Behind the Scenes sections — from inspired casting and precise directing to the evocative score and more. Expect discussion of Nicolas Cage’s... noteworthy unhinged performance, the Oscar-winning turns from Cher and Olympia Dukakis, and the film’s plotting, sexual politics, romantic flourishes, and deeper themes. We also explore how Moonstruck blends sharp comedy with Italian-American culture and the heartbeat of New York City. Finally, we share audience reactions, highlight our personal stand-outs, and wrap up with conclusions and scores. So don’t just stand there howling at Cosmo’s Moon — pour a glass of champagne (sugar cube optional) and join our movie-review family. Episode 125 – "I'm Your Huckleberry" After a little break, the Silver Screen Podcast o.g. is riding back into town with a modern Western classic that’ll have you quoting along in your best Wild West drawl. Michael is back in the hosting saddle with right-hand gunslinger D.K. riding shotgun, and they’re joined by good friend, special guest, and film-chooser Adrienne. That’s right—this week we’re reviewing 1993’s Tombstone. We kick things off with first impressions (including Mike’s fresh take as a first-time viewer), Adrienne shares why she picked the film, and D.K. goes the extra mile by also watching rival release Wyatt Earp to break down the differences—and why he thinks Tombstone claimed the cinematic glory. Along the way we dive into behind-the-scenes troubles, the rumoured uncredited direction of Kurt Russell, the sprawling script, actor preparation, endlessly quotable lines, and much more. Adrienne even treats us to some impromptu Latin translation! As always, we wrap up with our stand-out moments, audience responses, and final scores before riding off into the sunset. So press play and enjoy the episode—you're a daisy if you do. Cinema Classics Number 19 - "He says the sun came out last night. He says it sang to him." “We are not alone…” but we are in for one unforgettable discussion. This week on Silver Screen Cinema Classics, host Mike is back as ever to lead our celluloid exploration. He's joined by his right-hand man and occasional translator D.K., making a triumphant return. But that's not all, this episode also has two stellar guests: Silver Screen first-timer (but Trek podcast regular) Justin Avery Smith, and filmmaker, raconteur, and cinephile extraordinaire Michael Whaley. Together, the crew takes flight with Steven Spielberg’s spellbinding 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' — diving deep into its genesis, Spielberg’s masterful cinematic direction, and John Williams’s iconic, otherworldly score, complete with the unforgettable five tones. Expect praise for the writing and acting (with a dash of critique), admiration for its breathtaking pre-digital special effects, and a few surprising Easter eggs (want to know where R2-D2 and a TIE Fighter pop up?). For Mike, it’s a first-time close encounter; for D.K., it’s one of his all-time greats; and for our guests, plenty of fresh insights await. So grab your flashlight, tune your radio to the stars, and prepare for contact. Because when it comes to cinematic classics, the truth isn’t just out there — it’s right here, waiting to be discovered.
