Series 2, Episode 7 - “We Cybermen are superior in every way. Except when it comes to navigating stairs.” Welcome back, Doctor devotees and Cyber converts alike. This week our journey through all-time Cybermen stories takes us to the 26th Century, aboard a doomed freighter captained by an elderly British comedy legend, hurtling towards prehistoric Earth… and moments away from one of Doctor Who’s most shocking losses. Yes, it’s time for Earthshock. There’s a lot going on in this one, and our own ragtag crew are here to break it all down. Captain Michael is back in the host chair, with first officer D.K., returning guest Joshua (for the second week in a row), and HoM: DW first-timer Jenny rounding out the group with some impressive geek credentials — and maybe a surprising take on this particular adventure. We kick things off with the usual pre-amble, this time putting newbie Jenny through the Who initiation process: her introduction to the show, favourite stories so far, and her Cyber shout-outs. From there we briefly touch on the pleasantly surprising recent discovery of missing classic episodes and share our own excitement about what it could mean for fans. After that it’s a slightly shorter Hit or Miss section, where we debate a couple of big swings from the most recent series, a legendary antagonist, and a certain Sixth Doctor Cybermen encounter. As always, the final hour is devoted to the deep-dive review. D.K. talks through the behind-the-scenes decisions that shaped the story — including the secrecy around the return of the Cybermen and the devastating conclusion. We get into the Doctor and Adric’s surprisingly petulant behaviour in episode one, the effectiveness of the Cyber plan, some questionable stunt casting, issues with direction and effects, and the tension that still manages to land despite it all. There’s also a lively debate about pacing, nostalgia versus modern sensibilities, and whether the story still hits as hard today. As ever, we wrap up with audience opinions, our favourite moments, and final scores. So don’t just sit there watching old clips like the Cyber Leader — enjoy this podcast the way you’d enjoy a flower, a sunset, or a well-prepared meal. Hopefully it can be one of those small, beautiful things that life is all about. "Excellent!" D.K's Cult Classics Episode 50 - " I move the stars for no one" For Cult Classics' 50th episode, DK is kicking off the 80s fantasy season with a trip to the undergound. He only has thirteen hours to solve the riddle of the Labyrinth. Join him and guests Vean, Sandy and Jenn as they brave the bog of eternal stench and the Goblin city to face off against the Goblin king, himself. There's plenty of discussion to be had so jump in on the podcast where everything seems possible and nothing is what it seems. Series 2, Episode 6 - “My Sky Striker! My glory!” Hold on to your time rings, faithful podcast fans, because this week we’re heading back into the Cyber-review fold on a course for Nerva Beacon and the fabled planet of gold, Voga, for a main-episode review of the… “divisive” Tom Baker serial Revenge of the Cybermen. Host Mike and co-host Companion D.K welcome back returning guests Cliff Chapman and Joshua Merkley to help untangle a messy web of intrigue, espionage, viruses, missile strikes, crash landings, and some rather uncharacteristic cyborgs. But first, we warm up with a chat about our favourite Tom Baker stories and the best seasons of classic Who. Then it’s the section as familiar as a reused set: Hit or Miss. This week we debate a somewhat maligned Matt Smith Cyber-encounter, Doctor Who’s own superhero, a classic Hartnell serial, and a very recent companion. Then things get intense as we confront mishandled viruses, civil war, fighting over gold, oddly behaved AI, and people with questionable loyalties. And no, that’s not just us reading the news from any random day over the last seven years. Camps begin to form between those who despise the story, those who passionately defend it, and those who let nostalgia triumph over logic. Along the way we explore how the script changed from genesis to final form, the spooky behind-the-scenes tales of the Wookey Hole curse, the location and studio filming, the electronic music, and how the story ultimately left each of us feeling. We round things off with critic and audience reactions, our favourite moments, and our final scores. So try not to cause any rock slides or detonate explosives, and definitely avoid any crash landings while you join us for another opinionated and entertaining episode. HARRY SULLIVAN IS AN IMBECILE — but you’re not. So press play now, and don’t disappoint the Doctor. Links: Cliff: • facebook.com/cliff.chapman • cliffchapman.bsky.social • https://ko-fi.com/clif... Series 2, Episode 5 – “There was a dog pissing up against our tent, hold me Ianto.” We’re back for the next in our Hit or Miss: Doctor Who Cyber Season, and we're heading to 2000s Cardiff and into our first Whoniverse spin-off review. Yes, we're tackling the infamous “Cyberwoman” from Torchwood — the episode that asks, “What if body horror… but make it awkward?” Host Michael is joined by returning favourites: Pasty Sheep maestro and semi-pro Matt Berry impressionist George White, plus Who mega-fan, voice actor and self-declared No.1 fan (with heavy sarcasm) of Chris Chibnall, Cliff Chapman. We kick off with a big-picture Torchwood chat — the highs, the lows, the why did they think that was a good idea? — plus favourite Cybermen stories from across all Doctor Who media. Then it’s time for “Hit or Miss,” where quick critiques fly at another Who spin-off, a Cyber sidekick, a controversial modern Doctor and a Third Doctor romp. And then… the main event. If you’ve ever accused Mike of being too generous — or too quick to defend Chibnall — this may shock you. What starts as critique slides rapidly into venting, then mutates into something resembling group therapy. We break down the episode’s wasted potential, the rare moments that shine, and a genuinely strong performance from Gareth David-Lloyd… but there’s no escaping the frustrations. From infamous costuming choices to clunky “adult” dialogue, muddled character motivations, dated direction, sloppy scripting and an astonishingly misguided climax — nothing is spared. We round out with critic and audience reactions (apologies to the fans), pick out our favourite scraps of goodness (we try), and deliver final scores. Could this be the lowest rating we’ve ever given? Don’t slather yourself in barbecue sauce and fight a pterodactyl. Tune in and find out. If you dare. CONTENT WARNING: This episode's main review contains strong language, adult themes, and discussions of horror and sexuality. Like Torchwood, it is not intended for children. Cinema Classics Number 25 - "The total potential here must be nothing less than astronomical!" Prepare yourself, listener, for a new scale of science-fiction cinematic value. Dare you come with us and visit the Forbidden Planet? Skipper Mike & First Lieutenant D.K are joined on this amazing voyage by returning interplanetary specialist Justin Avery Smith as we head to Altair IV and arguably the birth of the sci-fi genre as we know it. Celebrating 70 years since it's initial release our intrepid trio dive deep into the genesis of this cinematic landmark, explore the groundbreaking ideas, effects, and Shakespeare-inspired plot. There's a lot of praise for the visuals, the acting (mostly) and the sheer imagination and directorial vision. There's also fair critique of the elements that don't hold up so well, from dated sexism to creepy crewmen and a view of humanity’s guardrails that feels retroactively naive. But ultimately, perhaps unsurprisingly, things devolve into a Robby the Robot love-fest, as we attempt to explain just how this mechanical marvel has charmed audiences and captured imaginations for seven decades. We conclude with the usual critical response, along with an extended look at this film's unique and lasting legacy, finishing with our highlights, critical conclusions and scores out of five interstellar stars. So have your own Robby whip you up a drink (maybe not 60 gallons of bourbon), press play and enjoy this imaginative space odyssey. D.K's Cult Classics Episode 49 - "Hydrolyzed vegetable protein, soybean meal, niacin, dextrose, and sodium nitrate flavoring.""Yup, that's what we call "meat" back home." Many copycat movies were produced in the wake of 1977's Star Wars. But perhaps none are as legendary as Roger Corman's Battle Beyond the Stars AKA The Magnificent 7 in space. Join DK and Nigel the Kaiju Whisperer as they take a deep dive into the movie with more alien species than you can shake a stick at, a sublime James Horner soundtrack, and arguably the most erotic ship in fiction. Series 2, Episode 4 - "My name was Ashad. I did spare your son...because he's a useless runt, sickly and weak. And I did have children. I slit their throats when they joined the resistance." Clouds are gathering, lightning strikes, and a familiar mechanical clank is moving in from Lake Geneva. Welcome to a spine-tingling episode of the Hit or Miss: Doctor Who Cyberman season, as this week we're investigating The Haunting of Villa Diodati. Host Michael is joined by a group of returning guests whose intellect and wit could rival any gathering of literary geniuses... or at least three Whovians and podcasters who turned up. It's regular contributor Tobi and newer recruits Stephen and Lynn. Our frightful foursome begin by discussing the highs (and lows) of the Whittaker era, then blast straight into the Hit or Miss section. This week the debates involve our famous time traveller's wife, a NuWho spaceship, a gender-swapped arch nemesis and a recent controversial cyber innovation. Then it’s off to Switzerland, 1816. Against the storm-lashed backdrop of Villa Diodati, our ghost hunters explore Frankenstein’s genesis, deliciously chilling atmosphere, and the seismic impact of Ashad — the Lone Cyberman. There’s praise (and some criticism) for the writing and performances, deep dives into the historical and thematic context, and an exploration of the Doctor’s seemingly unwinnable moral dilemma. So put the ghost story contest on the back burner, ignore the dreadful weather, grab a sandwich, and settle in for a mechanically macabre episode. Series 2, Episode 3 – "Another artist replaced by A.I!" Hello again Whovians and Cyberfans, and welcome to another episode of Hit or Miss: Doctor Who. This week our Cyberman explorations take us back to classic black-and-white Who, as we try not to trip any traps or wake any frozen armies during our deep dive into Second Doctor classic The Tomb of the Cybermen. Host Mike and co-host D.K. are joined by two returning guests for this expedition to Telos: regular fixture Tobi, and Lynn, back again following our The Tenth Planet review. Proceedings begin with an analysis of Tobi and D.K.’s choices for favourite Cyberman storylines, before heading straight into our regular Hit or Miss segment. This week’s mini-debates take in a Key to Time adventure, the most recent Master, a particularly relevant classic companion, and the Seventh Doctor’s sole clash with our featured silver nemesis. Then it’s on to the main event. Our tomb-raiding crew dig deep into the story’s growing reputation as a once-missing adventure, the evolution of the Cybermen, Victoria’s first trip in the TARDIS, the contrast between human and Cyber villains, and the sheer brilliance of Patrick Troughton and Frazer Hines. It’s not all praise, though — we also confront the story’s unfortunate racist tropes, over-ambitious effects, studio limitations, and a slightly flimsy world-conquering plot. Audience thoughts, final conclusions, and scores close things out as ever. So don’t touch any suspicious doors, don’t stand between obvious weapons and training dummies, never make a deal with the Cybermen — and press play to navigate your way out of the catacombs with us. Series 2, Episode 2 – “Extreme Makeover: Human Edition” Welcome back, Cyber-converts, to the second episode of our new podcast series exploring Cybermen stories old & new. This week we shift focus to NuWho. So watch out for zeppelins, and hope your doppelgänger isn’t a dog as we step into a world that’s familiar… but just a little bit different. That’s right: we’re diving into the alternate-reality two-parter “Rise of the Cybermen/The Age of Steel”. Host Mike is broadcasting this week alongside our very own makeshift Preachers; returning guests Michael Whaley and Stephen Rogerson, plus first-timer Joshua Merkley. We kick things off by grilling Josh on his Doctor Who origins and favourites, share our own standout Cyber stories, then head into the ever-reliable Hit or Miss segment. This week’s debates include a semi-lost Cyberman adventure, a bang-up-to-date design, a true Who icon, and a group of Dalek fighters. Our main review covers everything from emotional performances (and occasional scenery-chewing) to the effectiveness of the Cybermen’s reintroduction, the alternate-world concept, character arcs, and deeper thematic meanings. Along the way we explore early script ideas, BTS facts, audience reactions, and — as always — wrap up with individual scores & combined podcast rating. So keep an eye on your earpods, put your phone down for a bit, and enjoy the episode. Cinema Classics Number 24 - "Dear God. Did you have to send me news like that - today of all days? I know, I know we are the chosen people. But once in a while, can't you choose someone else?" Hello again, movie fans and cultured classics aficionados! Welcome back to another episode of Cinema Classics on the Silver Screen Podcast feed. This month, host Michael has endured hardship, guest cancellations, and the challenge of keeping this episode balanced like a certain musician on a rooftop, as we turn our attention to the emotionally charged classic musical Fiddler on the Roof. Thankfully, first-time guest and devoted Fiddler fan Lynn McKinnon steps in to save the day — ensuring this is anything but a Tevye-worthy monologue. We begin by exploring Lynn’s favourite classic films and both reviewers’ history with this particular cinematic landmark, before diving into behind-the-scenes trivia, the deeper thematic currents, and our thoughts on its lasting effectiveness and impact. Along the way, we examine how the film tackles tradition, family, faith, politics, and its vital cultural and historical context. There’s plenty of well-earned praise for the performances — especially powerhouse lead Topol — and an attempt to answer how this story continues to resonate today, and what it might offer our own lives. As always, we close with contemporary critical reception, our final verdicts, and the all-important podcast score. So don’t spend your time wondering what you’d do if you were a rich man — grab a drink, raise a glass, and join us with a hearty “L’Chaim!” — To Life! Sequel Season #1 - “The way I see it, someone’s out to make a sequel. You know, cash in on all the movie murder hoopla. So it’s our job to observe the rules of the sequel.” We’re back! Silver Screen Podcast (regular flavour) returns for 2026 and — well — do you like scary movies? I sure hope so. What’s your favourite scary movie? If you said Showgirls, then you’ll be right at home with this deep-dive review of slasher sequel Scream 2. We’re covering this film for two reasons: firstly, to tie in with the imminent release of Scream 7, and secondly to serve as a soft launch for our brand-new Silver Screen “Sequel Season.” This is essentially our pilot, but if all goes well we’ll be back later in the year to take a closer look at even more film follow-ups. Hopefully you’ll stick with us — but for now, it’s back to Windsor College… Regular host and podcast supremo Michael (or should that be Mickey?) is joined by two great guests to analyse the carnage candy. First up is returning guest — and first-time viewer — Tobi. We’re also joined by first-time guest Kevin, fellow Scream aficionado and horror podcaster. Together, our terrifying trio discuss their first impressions of the film, its personal and cultural legacy, what works (and what doesn’t) in the writing and post-modern commentary, Wes Craven’s masterful directing touch, and how this sequel stacks up against the iconic original. We also play detective along with the movie itself, diving into behind-the-scenes drama including spoiler leaks, script rewrites, and rushed schedules. Along the way we discuss the returning and new cast, our favourite characterisations, some iconic (and criminally underused) guest cameos, the gore factor, and much more. As always, we conclude with audience thoughts, a brief round-up of critical response, and our own conclusions and scores. So grab your popcorn, cover your ears if you go to the bathroom, pause your debates about James Cameron sequels, and strap in as we take another stab at analysing this killer franchise. Series 2, Episode 1 - “We are equipped to survive. We are only interested in survival. Anything else is of no importance.Welcome back, faithful friends, to a brand new series of Hit or Miss: Doctor Who. Things are getting decidedly chilly as we head to Snowcap Base in the South Pole — and into our first examination of the cold, brutal logic of the chilling Cybermen. D.K. is your host, guiding our podcast party through the debut appearance of the menacing cyborgs in a hugely important story that also just happens to feature the first ever regeneration. Joining D.K is regular co-host Michael Wilson. We’re also delighted to welcome two first-time guests with plenty of experience of their own — Stephen and Lynn. Before the main review, D.K. lightly interrogates our guests on introductions to the Whoniverse, favourite stories and personal best Cyberman appearances. Then it’s the return of the Hit or Miss segment. Our intrepid crew then jumps into the main review, navigating those all-important firsts, examining the animated fourth episode, critiquing Hartnell’s final regular performance, and rating the companions and guest cast. They discuss whether the Cybermen make a strong first impression, the pacing and limitations of 60s television, Hartnell’s unfortunate absence from Episode Three, and a whole lot more than you can shake a Z-bomb at. As always, we wrap up with audience thoughts, our own conclusions, and final scores. So grab your radiation rods, keep your eyes on the skies as you hit play — and for goodness’ sake, keep warm. Cinema Classics Number 23 - "This is my life! It always will be! Nothing else! Just us, and the cameras, and those wonderful people out there in the dark!" Cinema Classics is back for 2026! In a very apt choice we're looking at classic cinema reflecting on classic cinema this month, as we head down to Sunset Boulevard — Billy Wilder’s venomous, melancholic love letter to Hollywood and one of the most iconic films of the Golden Age. Regular host Michael is joined by stalwart returning guest and fellow first-time viewer Tobi to discuss Wilder’s refusal of subtlety, the film’s ruthless focus and moral ambiguity, and how its heightened dialogue and stylised performances blur the line between tragedy, black comedy, and outright horror. From its famously fatalistic opening to an ending that fully commits to madness, we explore how Sunset Boulevard is a film about illusion, performance, and an industry that devours its own ghosts. We also dig into the film’s meta-casting, gothic production design, dive deep into the themes, and explore why Norma Desmond isn’t meant to feel like a real person — but a movie star who never stopped acting. Is the film slow, or simply uncompromising? Are its clichés dated — or foundational? And who, exactly, is it cruelest to? Fire up your old-school projector, get nostalgic for the past and join us for our thoughts on the ultimate Hollywood fable. What a wonderful next year it's going to be! What fun we'll have! Series 1, Episode 10 - "Because something seems impossible. We try, it doesn't work, we try again. We learn, we improve, we fail again, but better, we make friends, we learn to trust, we help each other. We get it wrong again. We improve together, then ultimately succeed. Because this is what being alive is. And it's better than the alternative. So come on, you brilliant humans. We go again and we win. Deal?" It’s that wibbly-wobbly stretch of the year when time feels a bit out of sync, so what better moment to dive into some classic Doctor Who time-loop chaos? To close out our Dalek deep-dive series, we’re ringing in the New Year a little early with Jodie Whittaker’s festive special, “Eve of the Daleks.” Host Mike has swapped the turkey sandwiches and leftover chocolates for the microphone one final time this year, joined by two fantastic returning guests for a truly international episode. From Germany comes our good friend Tobi, and calling in from the USA is our favourite filmmaker and fellow geek Michael Whaley. Our globe-spanning panel kicks things off with a Hit or Miss look at four previous festive specials before debating the best of the rest. Then it’s straight into the main event: a deep dive into “Eve of the Daleks,” covering the angry tin despots themselves, Yaz’s big reveal, the Groundhog Day-style structure, the guest stars, the criminally underused Dan Lewis, and more. We also take a peek at the critics’ reactions before offering our own highlights and final scores. So settle in, unwrap another chocolate, maybe skip the “beef and beans,” and warm up your voice for the Auld Lang Syne singalong by shouting at some Daleks as we wrap up the year with a bang. It’s not quite fireworks… but it’s definitely a celebration. Cinema Classics Number 22 - "Strange, isn't it? Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?" “Merry Christmas, you beautiful old podcast!” It's here! Our Silver Screen Christmas Special this year lands with Cinema Classics as we dive into possibly the definitive holiday movie: Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life. Host Mike “Bailey” is joined by Guardian Angel-a, Sandy “Claus”, and Rob(in) Lunt for a bumper-length festive deep dive. We kick things off by chatting through our favourite Christmas films and regular seasonal viewing before exploring the origins of It’s a Wonderful Life—from its beginnings as a self-published booklet to its historical context, legacy, possible Muppet connections, and even why some at the FBI once frowned upon it. (Bah, humbug!) We unwrap the film’s themes, the messages that resonate today, and what makes it such an enduring seasonal favourite. There’s praise for Capra’s direction, the beautifully crafted sets, its emotional score, and the grounded performances—from James Stewart’s iconic turn, to Donna Reed’s underrated heart, to Lionel Barrymore’s despicably villainous Mr. Potter, and more. Finally, we close with critical context, our favourite elements, and our traditional ratings out of five heavenly stars. So grab a mince pie, put your feet up, ring a bell for Clarence, and enjoy this Christmas cracker of an episode. Episode 137 - "As I was saying, I'm a woman and can't be taken for granted. Life's a bitch, now so am I." The Silver Screen Signal is lighting up the night sky, and that can only mean one thing: it’s time for another seasonally relevant episode of this here movie podcast. Host Mike has emerged from Wilson Manor for a December deep dive into Tim Burton’s festive, freaky, feisty superhero sequel, Batman Returns. We’ve assembled two outstanding ladies for their own returns to the podcast—and trust us, they have thoughts. First, racing in like Batwoman to rescue us once again from unreliable guests and co-hosts alike, it’s Sandy Eavenson. Joining her is a woman who has made Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman her personal life goals—Vean. Strap into your Batmobiles, folks… this one’s a doozy. Our intrepid trio digs into the troika of the Bat, the Cat, and the Penguin—what each brings to the film, who gets sidelined, who’s the most Burton-esque, and who ultimately steals the whole show. And that’s before we even touch on Max Shreck and his creepy dual relevance as both an expressionist boogeyman and the real-world villain who doesn’t need a costume. We dive deep into the film’s themes, its unforgettable visuals, Burton’s iconic direction, and the script’s evolution from early drafts to that final, unplanned proof-of-life shot of Catwoman. There’s also talk about our first encounters with the film, its cultural impact, the stellar performances, the instantly quotable dialogue, and so much more. So grab yourself a glass of milk, adjust a neon sign or two, watch out for any suspicious umbrellas, and join us—because, like Selina Kyle's answering machine, the party never stops on the Silver Screen Podcast. "One thing about living in Santa Carla I never could stomach; all the damn vampires." For the final Cult Classics of 2025, D.K. is joined by the bloodsucking Brady Bunch, as a collection of guests, old and new, descend upon the murder capital of the world to discuss Joel Schumacher's 1987 action horror 'The Lost Boys', and answer the question, would you give up your humanity for Jami Gertz? Head down to the boardwalk and join them, maybe pick up a comic book, or two.
