Description

Welcome to Sunshine in my Nest Podcast! I'm your host Elizabeth Santelmann. I hope these chats with our mentors about gospel-centered living will equip and inspire you to grow spiritually, love your family, and invest in your local community!

Through the conversations with these women of faith I’ve learned to pray and trust God's plans are good for me. I've grown in empathy, obedience to God’s will, patience with my kids, skills to disciple my kids, and reflected on how my day to day life impacts my faith walk. I pray that listening will do the same for you!

In the next few weeks, we are digging into our faith more deeply. Last week we kicked off a brand-new project called the “Legacy of Faith” series. I've hand-picked people I respect most for each topic, so I'd love it if you invite a friend to join you, and let’s grow to be more like Christ together. I don’t know what your experience looked like, but for a lot of us middle school sucked. The proof of that will come out in some stories today. But it’s also a pivotal time of faith formation. Today Caroline and I talk about what it looks like to talk TO middle schoolers and not down at them. We remember what it felt like to be in middle school. We share ideas for how to start good conversations and what questions end up being effective when leading a small group. We also talk about how easy it was to say really mean things about other people in order to gain social currency. We are back this week to keep talking about what itlooks like to live a Legacy of Faith. Last week we talked about what it looks like when kids love Jesus really young. If you’re like me maybe you’ve struggled with not having a “fancy” testimony. Abbey and I talked about the benefit of exposing little ones to faith from a young age and if you’re an adult in the life of a kid what a gift that is to give them. This week we are going to talk about how practically we point kids to faith! If you want to apply what you learn today for this series I’m creating a download with a verse to meditate, a passage to study, and questions to dig in deeper. You can find a link to that in the show notes. Today we are kicking off our series by talking about life in the early years. Jesus takes discipleship of and empathy with little ones VERY seriously. To successfully have gospel empathy with little ones, and how to effectively disciple them we have to be intentional. So let’s dig in!Welcome to Sunshine in My Nest, Abbey. Tell us about yourself and your stage of life, but more importantly what kind of kid you were. What did God use to bring you to faith?Have you always liked kids?Did you always know your kids were capable of faith? Why is the discipleship of children important?I heard with piano lessons it doesn’t pay to start early, because after they learn to read they can learn in a couple of months what it would have taken years to teach couldn’t we just wait, start at 12 and more effectively use our time? You can find Abbey's series of books "Training Young Hearts" or follow Abbey on Instagram. You can find Elizabeth writing helpful hints on the blogHelping you love Jesus and disciple your kids on Instagram Or get access to the Additional study resources hereOriginal Music written and recorded by Jonathan Camenisch *affiliate links are used when appropriate. Have you wondered how to add more than European cultural education to your homeschool? While curating our favorite book lists I realized how little variety there was in what we were loving. Nicole Cottrell has been such an amazing person to turn to for book lists that include varied cultural experiences in our children's feast of beautiful education!! We are so blessed when we look at the strengths and gifts that people bring to the human experience and I can’t wait to read the book she recommended in our homeschool! After this conversation, I’m completely changing how I meal plan!! Her go-to routine and meal planning method make putting together food a breeze. She even has a free printable you can find here! We also discuss what it looks like to have a gospel-rich environment even when your kids are really young. More than having family worship we talk about how to incorporate the truths of God's Word from when we get up, as we live life, and as we put them to bed at night.  You can find more of Joanna Kimbrel's work on her Instagram or at The Gospel Coalition  You can find Elizabeth: Writing helpful hints on the blog Being a stay-at-home mom co-worker on Instagram  Or get access to the "Penpal Resources" by signing up with email!  *affiliate links are used when appropriate. Today I'm pulling a girl's only chat interview from the vault. Last fall I interviewed Shannon K Evans. We talk about our period stories, and how we came to understand how our bodies work as women. And how women's bodies reflect the image of God in a unique way!  How the word "helper" for the Holy Spirit is the same word used to describe Eve.  How the blood and water that poured from Christ's side symbolized the new birth we have as believers.  We talk about Theology of the Womb and some of the interesting points the book made. (In hindsight now having read that book, theologically, I come from a different lens than the author of that book, but I also learned a lot from the thoughts presented there too!)  Not all our energy is linear and the ebbs and flows allow us to refocus on the parts of life we want to come back to.  You can find Shannon on her Instagram and her book Rewilding Motherhood where ever books are sold You can find Elizabeth: Writing helpful hints on the blog Being a stay-at-home mom co-worker on Instagram  Or get access to the "Penpal Resources" by signing up with email!  *affiliate links are used when appropriate. Something we try to fix and it goes so wrong?  Join Jen Oshman and me as we talk about the ways the world has tried to fix fundamental problems that sin has created. Even these repairs still fall short without the gospel. We talk about how we can embrace our full identities in Christ and heal the brokenness sin has created in our cultures and hearts.  Be sure to pick up Jen's book "Cultural Counterfeits" to continue this conversation.  You can find Jen at www.jenoshman.com You can find Elizabeth: Writing helpful hints on the blog Being a stay-at-home mom co-worker on Instagram  Or get access to the "Penpal Resources" by signing up with email!  *affiliate links are used when appropriate. As parents, we know the words we say matter so much. But in the heat of the moment, many parents still find that angry or degrading words come pouring out. After these moments, hot tears of repentance stream down cheeks, and oaths are sworn. It will never happen again. Amy is a mother of nine, parenting coach, and writer in the Wild and Free community. She and I are going to explore how God's grace can cover angry words and how that grace can transform the words we speak. -From a child psychology perspective, why do the words that parents speak matter so much?  Can it affect our kids' anxiety and depression? -What are some of the most damaging words and phrases a parent can use? -How do we repair when we've found we've used those words again? -In what way do we need to see ourselves to change the way we speak? -Does the way we talk to ourselves matter? (How does seeing ourselves held in grace matter?) -If a woman is starting to feel heavy with the thought of watching every little word that comes out of her mouth, what hope do you have to offer her? Follow Amy Hughes HERE or get "Words Like Honey." The number one thing I get asked when I share about memorizing the catechism is "Wait... I didn't know you were Catholic." Trying to explain that there are many kinds of catechisms and we use a Protestant one leaves even more questions. That's sad to me because teaching my kids the catechism has become one of the most formative faith practices I've had. Today I'm talking to Leah Nicklaus. She is a fellow mom of only boys who homeschools in the classical/Charlotte Mason method. She has hundreds of gospel-centered book recommendations and resources! I've come to love chatting with her because we share so much in common, including how valuable we find the catechism to be. -How has catechism helped you and your family? -When did you first discover the catechism? How would you define it? -Which catechism do you like best? -How do you include it in other discipleship practices? What does discipleship look like in your family? -Have you found the catechism to help your faith? -What are other family discipleship practices that work for you? You can find Leah Nicklaus here! My walk with God has looked so different in different stages of my life, or do we call it Eras now? But in every one of the new stages of life, I have found myself encouraged by hearing the way other people practice their faith. Today I'm talking to Katie Orr, Bible Teacher and Bible study writer. We are going to compare and contrast what our spiritual walk looked like as we were kids, how it developed through having our own kids, and how it's shifted as Bible teachers. I hope as you listen, you can take and add the practices that feel encouraging to you, and leave what doesn't fit for another season. In this episode, we cover:Childhood devotional habits and family Bible reading traditionsHow to make your faith your own in your teen yearsWhat to do when you feel like walking away from faithCreative ways to connect with God during busy motherhoodTransitioning from survival mode to pouring into othersEncouragement for adapting your spiritual practices as life changesWe are both participating in a "Bible Study Bundle" available just this week. In it, you'll get a couple of the Bible studies we discussed during this episode, and many, many more! You can Katie Orr at this link! I was reading a year or two ago, I can't even remember where now, but a sentence from the article has solidified itself in my memory. It said something along the lines of "Most people on social media follow someone one step ahead of them, or one financial bracket above them. Any more than that and it's overwhelming, under that and it isn't inspiring." It struck me because it named rather specifically why social media can breed discontentment. If we are only looking at the lives of people a little bit ahead of us, then we are always going to be tempted to spend above than we can afford. Maybe that's taking trips that the financial strain makes us miserable afterward. Sink a deposit into a house that consumes our whole household income. Maybe it's as simple as buying organizing systems that is totally out of reach. Kate Strickler is the creator behind Naptime Kitchen. For this book, she was just named a New York Times best-selling author! Congratulations! Her new book, "I Just Wish I had a Bigger Kitchen," tackles why we feel discontent when most of us have everything we need. -What is the first time you started noticing you were believing lies about your life? -How do you usually identify that you are believing a lie? -Do you think naming the lie helps remove its power over us? -Why is the chapter "I just wish I had more friends" resonating most with readers?
