Description
The ’60s and ’70s album rock moved the nation during the early rock n roll times, the British Invasion, Viet Nam, The Cold War, The Iron Curtain. DC5, Buddy Holly, Beatles, Cream, Zeppelin, Janis, songwriters like Elton and Bernie, John and Paul, Simon and Garfunkel....the list goes on. It rocked through the life and times of the world and it made us feel and helped us numb out. Fifty years later, the albums remain, a little scratched, some stained or even broken, but the music lives on. I try to present a brief history, a wayback machine if you will, into the artists, writers, lyrics and nostalgia of those wonderful days of free love, exploring the mind and smelling, eating, seeing, tasting and touching, indelibly burning memories for future enjoyment. It’s about the music and the era of album oriented rock. These are some of the Tales Vinyl Tells.

Episode 93: Nostalgia: “A Sentimental Longing Or Wistful Affection....”
February 17, 2026
…for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations”. Yeh man! Like the 60s & 70s! Playing for Change remakes songs with musicians from all over the world with sometimes odd instruments. Did you enjoy Joy of Cooking? Not the book, but the band. They’re here with a few nostalgic pieces just for you and our silly nostalgia. I’m in the present and love a lot of things about the past. The Doors and Zeppelin on windowpane. Allmans and shrooms. I do hope these tunes today will make you smile and encourage you to be grateful for all you are, here, now.

January 1, 2026
Greetings and hellos to you and you and you, once again or for the first time. This is Tales Vinyl Tells, a weekly adventure into the great (and sometimes not so great) but mostly great album rock that was on our LPs of the 60s & 70s. I hope you’re well and nice today. I’m Brian Hallgren and this has been my trip since December 2019. Covid first reared its ugly head in China in mid-December 2019 and the first episode of Tales Vinyl Tells was released that month. Now we’re on episode 204 and it’s another hour of some really good tunes, including Wet Willie with Jimmy Hall, Desmond Dekker, Tom Morello with the Boss, an excellent Warren Zevon cut and lots more. Episode 203: The Stylus Is In The Groove And We're Spinning In Circles
December 15, 2025
A list had accumulated of tunes for a Tales Vinyl Tells program and it finally came time to reveal that list. It was……just the right time. So, there’s Renbourn, Winchester, Lake, The ‘Tramp, even Michael Stanley with a cooker, backed by some pros, like Joe Walsh, Sanborn, Deja vu ppl and a really great group. I’ll put into print here what I mentioned in the show, this tune, Let’s Get The Show on the Road, is on YouTube when they played on Don Kirschner’s Rock Concert.

Episode 134: Bonnie's Story
December 3, 2025
In a conversation with my friend Bonnie, she said how hearing a certain tune brought back memories of a time long ago. Who she was hanging out with, what music he was listening to (and the B-52s Rock Lobster was driving her crazy). He played it over and over, saturating his beloved partner. But she smiled as she said some of the things she hears on Tales Vinyl Tells stir up some good memories. So there it is, folks. The album rock of the 60s & 70s was some memorable stuff. Just think about the bell bottoms, the John Lennon-type glasses with purple lens, psychedelic headbands, pungent smells in the air covered by sandalwood or nag champa incense, beads hanging in doorways instead of doors. Oh sure, its all very nostalgic. Great songs fill this and every hour of Tales Vinyl Tells.

Episode 154: Supermoon Music And More
November 25, 2025
Heres Another Tales Vinyl Tells, sharing the The vinyl albums from the 60s & 70s, those LPs carried the new wave of The British Invasion while America was already experiencing its own invasion from Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, Mamas and Papas, CSN&Y, Bob Dylan, The Doors, the folkies, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Freddie Boom Boom Cannon, The Turtles, The Buckinghams even. And in the next hour, my intention today is to share some of those great LPs that were breaking a type of sound barrier and blowing minds while we.well, we were having our own revolution, discovering free love, recreational experimental mind altering elements, all to a soundtrack that lives on and has NOT been repeated. This music of today may last, maybe not. 60s & 70s rock has everlasting life.

September 23, 2025
A fore note: Today Tuesday 9/23/25, I will be guest co-host on my friend Steve Haggard’s radio show, The Haggard & Haggard Radio Hour, at 4 PM CDT on RadioFreeNashville.org. We’ll chat a bit about music and especially my choices for today, two from a very inspiring artist, Jimmie Spheeris and hear some Pacific Reggae from the Herbs of New Zealand, “the land down under the land down under”. Tune in! As Steve says, “and some meaningless banter.” But you already know that.
Hello again and a big hi to you all. There’s a tradition here at TVT to try not to repeat any tunes. Unsuccessful I’ve been but if I do repeat, there’s a high quality put on a number. That’s why we start out with two from Traffic’s John Barleycorn Must Die LP. It is a very cool musical masterpiece. And you’ll also hear Link Wray, Tracy Nelson, John Kongos and more. The ever-so-popular JIMJAM today is CSNY’s Teach Your Children, soon, so get ready for TVT!

Episode 199: Fall Faves, Salute To Mark Volman
September 19, 2025
Here’s another Tales Vinyl Tells for ya. High, hello and welcome back to more of that great album rock of the 60s & 70s along with (sometimes) tunes on either sides of those decades. It’s almost fall here in middle Tennessee and Nashville. Summer is winding down and it’s been one hot mothuh, and not in a good way. The dogwoods have put out their little green pods which have grown into bigger red pods, and the season will change soon. It’s on the way. Today’s hour includes some songs about fall and there’s also my statement about the mess in these United States with a lying evil fascist in our White House. They bricked over the Rose Garden and there’s so much gaudy fake gold nugget accents in the Oval they should offer barf bags at the door. No more spray paint, ok?? And he wants a Nobel Prize and wants to name the Beloved Kennedy Center after himself or her. What a flabby gas bag. I can’t stand this guy, the Russian asset, ruining not running the US. He’s the Master of Disaster, the dark lord (thinks he’s God, more like the antiChrist). The first set goes out to Capt Bonespurs. That’s my rant for today. Mark Volman of the Turtles has entered the room next door, we remember him. and I’ve got a new one from Neil Young in this first set. You’ll like this one! Now Let’s play some great Tales that Vinyls Tell. I’m Brian Hallgren. Let’s spin some!

Some are live updates like one from Joe Bonamassa and a 461 Ocean Blvd tune. Ry’s live. So is Mick Fleetwood with Christine McVie saluting the music of Peter Green. It’s quite possibly a Supernatural hour and it’s for your auditory pleasure. You can email me at talesvinyltells@gmail.com. I’m Brian Hallgren and these are the Tales Vinyl Tells.

Episode 126: Chris Hillman Salute! He's Been A Major Player In Rock And Country/Rock
August 29, 2025
At the turntables today with some of that great album rock from the 60s & 70s. Those sweet vinyls can still sound as good today as they did 50+ years ago. Pardon the ashes and candlewax. But there aren't any greasy fingerprints because we hold them by the edge, with the edge in the palms of our hands. And there's really not any candlewax or ashes on them. They are sacred. I hope today you'll be delighted when we hear two from the Beau Brummels, a bit of the history of Chris Hillman with his many bands and all we can fit into this hour, including another new segment, the Jim Jam, later today. We'll play Lady Jane by the Stones together. I'm glad you're listening and hope you're digging the Tales Vinyl Tells.
