✅MASS DRUGS ADMINISTRATION. MDA I volunteered as a Community Drug Distributor in the MDA against Lymphatic Filariasis. Oron is a tropical region, especially after having neglected roads resulting in waterlogged, mud and dirts zone. This gives room to mosquitoes which is a threat to Public Health causing increased Elephantiasis rate in the region. NTDs according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) are a group of 17 diseases common in middle and low-income countries particularly in continents like Asia, the Americas and Africa. These diseases affect children and tend to be caused by Helminthes, viruses, bacteria and protozoa resident in about 149 countries. They affect about 1 billion people worldwide with about 150,000 fatalities recorded annually. These diseases are called NTDs because they are prevalent in low and middle income countries and so receive minimal funding, in contrast to other diseases such as malaria, HIV and tuberculosis. Another reason they are neglected is due to their lower propensity for causing deaths. However, it is important to note that these NTDs can start off a vicious cycle which can eventually culminate in the death of large populations A large share of the NTDs recognized by the WHO have their abode in Nigeria. Notable ones include; trachoma, buruli ulcer, Human African trypanosomiasis, Dengue fever, Schistosomiasis, lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis and soil transmitted helminthes among others. ✅Lymphatic Filariasis Lymphatic filariasis is a human disease caused by parasitic worms known as filarial worms. Most cases of the disease have no symptoms. Some people, however, develop a syndrome called elephantiasis, which is marked by severe swelling in the arms, legs, breasts, or genitals. The skin may become thicker as well, and the condition may become painful. The changes to the body have the potential to harm the person's social and economic situation. The worms are spread by the bites of infected mosquitoes. Three types of worms are known to cause the disease: Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and Brugia timori, with Wuchereria bancrofti being the most common. These worms damage the lymphatic system. The disease is diagnosed by microscopic examination of blood collected during the night. The blood is typically examined as a smear after being stained with Giemsa stain. Testing the blood for antibodies against the disease may also permit diagnosis. Other roundworms from the same family are responsible for river blindness. Prevention can be achieved by treating entire groups in which the disease exists, known as mass deworming.
