An English Song “Somewhere Out There”
Hello, this is Teacher Bear,我是Bear老師。
Kids, Moon Festival is coming soon.
Moon Festival is a very important festival for Chinese people, a time for reunions. What will you do with your family?
But if your family couldn’t be together, wouldn't you be sad?
Once upon a time, the Chinese writer Sū Dōngpō, missing his younger brother, wrote such a beautiful sentence: " Dàn yuàn rén chángjiǔ, qiānlǐ gòng chánjuān."
This line means, "I hope the person I miss will live long and healthy, so that even though we're thousands of miles apart, we can still appreciate the same moon together."
This sentence reminds me of the American animated film " An American Tail. "
In the story, two separated siblings can't find each other and miss each other terribly.
One night, they gaze at the same moon from two different places and sing the song "Somewhere out there."
I love this song and find it deeply touching. Let's learn it together today!
An English Song “Somewhere Out There”/英文歌曲《天涯海角》
composer/作曲家:James Horner 、 Barry Mann
lyricist/作詞人:Cynthia Weil
translator/翻譯:Bear Weir
Somewhere out there beneath the pale moonlight, someone's thinking of me and loving me tonight.
Somewhere out there someone's saying a prayer, that we'll find one another in that big somewhere out there.
And even though I know how very far apart we are, it helps to think we might be wishing on the same bright star.
And when the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby, it helps to think we're sleeping underneath the same big sky.
Somewhere out there, if love can see us through, then we'll be together somewhere out there, out where dreams come true.

Kids, is there someone somewhere out there in the world you deeply miss?
If so, this Moon Festival, pray to the full moon. I believe that the person you miss, looking at the same moon, can also feel your love.

The Talking Black Clay Basin
Hello, this is Teacher Bear, 我是Bear老師。
Kids, it's Ghost Month, the seventh month of the lunar calendar, and it's time to listen to ghost stories again.
But don't be afraid, because not all ghosts are bad. Some are even quite pitiful.
If one day a ghost needed your help, would you be willing to help?
Let's listen to this story first, and then think about whether you're willing to help.
Once upon a time there was a businessman named Liú Shìchāng. When he was young, he left his poor hometown to do business. Later, when he made a fortune, he wanted to return to his hometown to support his parents and let them live a good life.
He rode his horse, laden with valuables, and made haste for home. As darkness fell, unable to find an inn, he sought shelter with a nearby family who made clay basins.
The owners of the house,Zhào Dà and his wife, were greedy and cruel. Seeing Liú Shìchāng wearing beautiful, expensive clothes and carrying many valuables, they hatched a sinister plan.
While Liú Shìchāng slept, they murdered him, buried him in the backyard, and seized his belongings, becoming extremely wealthy.
A few months later, an old man named Zhāng Biégǔ, hearing of Zhào Dà's prosperity, hurried to collect a debt. Sure enough, he saw the Zhao family had built a large house.
Zhāng Biégǔ said, "Now that you've made a fortune, you can pay me back the four hundred and twenty coins you owe me!"
Unexpectedly,Zhào Dà refused to admit the debt. Instead, he said, " If you don't have any money, I'll give it to you. Why insist I owe you money? Four hundred coins are nothing. I have more in my pocket." With that, he dropped the four hundred coins with a clatter.
Zhāng Biégǔ was about to scold him, but then he decided to let it go. He picked up the coins and made to leave. He saw a number of clay basins in the corner and grabbed a new one to replace the missing twenty coins, which made him feel better.
Once home, he threw the basin aside and tried to get some sleep. "Ouch, be gentle! You hurt me!" A sound came from the black clay basin, startling Zhāng Biégǔ so much that he fell off the bed.
He picked up the basin, turned it over and over, and looked at it again and again.
Then the basin suddenly cried sadly, saying,
"Sir, I died a tragic death. You must redress my injustice.”
Zhāng Biégǔ, always a warmhearted man, was no longer afraid after hearing the basin crying. He asked, "Are you a ghost? Why are you hiding in this basin? What is this injustice? Tell me!"
The basin then told its story:
"My name is Liú Shìchāng. Six months ago, I stayed at the Zhao family's house. Unexpectedly, the couple, wanting to steal my money, killed me at night and buried me in the backyard. Later, they dug up dirt from the backyard to make basins, and my soul has taken possession of this black clay basin. I shouldn’t die like this, please seek justice for me.”
Zhāng Biégǔ, moved by this, felt deep sympathy for the basin and angrily said, " The Zhao couple are so cruel. Don't be sad. I will take you to the court to file a complaint tomorrow."
Zhāng Biégǔ, who had never been to the court before, was so nervous that he couldn't sleep all night. But for the black clay basin, he mustered his courage and went to the court early in the morning, beating the drum to demand justice.
The judge sat in the court, looking very majestic. He asked Zhāng Biégǔ, "What is your grievance?"
Zhāng Biégǔ recounted the story of the black clay basin, pointing to it and saying, "If you don't believe me, ask it."
The judge asked the basin, "Black clay basin, is that true?"
But the basin remained silent.
The judge, assuming Zhāng Biégǔ was causing trouble, ordered his attendants to expel him.
Expelled from the court, Zhāng Biégǔ slapped the basin twice and angrily exclaimed, "The judge addressed you just now, why didn't you say anything?"
The basin replied, "Just now, the door god of the court stopped me and wouldn't let me in!"
Hearing this, Zhāng Biégǔ mustered his courage, reentered the court, and told the judge the situation. Thus informed, the judge picked up his pen, wrote a few words on paper, and had someone burn it in front of the door, asking the door god to let the black clay basin's soul inside.
A second time, the judge shouted, "Black clay basin! Black clay basin! Speak quickly!"
Even after calling twice, the basin remained silent.
Furious, the judge slammed the table and shouted, "How dare you! How dare you come to court and cause trouble! Someone, give Zhāng Biégǔ twenty lashes!"
The twenty strokes of the cane left Zhāng Biégǔ's bottom burning like fire, and he had no choice but to limp out of the court, clutching the basin. He threw the basin down hard and angrily said, "I'm done with you."
"Ouch!" the basin screamed, "It hurts! It hurts!"
Zhāng Biégǔ said, "You're screaming so loudly now, why didn't you say anything in the courtroom just now?"
The basin said, " I suddenly remembered that I am naked and feel shy to meet the Judge. Please, give me something to wear, and I will follow you into the court.”
Zhāng Biégǔ said, "Go in again? I've already been beaten twenty times for you. If I go in again, I might be beaten to death."
But unable to resist the basin's pleas, Zhāng Biégǔ found a piece of clothing to cover the basin and limped back into the court.
Afraid that the basin wouldn't follow, he shouted to the basin as he walked, "Are you here? Are you here?"
The basin, covered by the clothes, kept answering, "I'm here, I'm here!" The court officials were stunned.
When the basin met the judge, he wept and unburdened himself of his grievances.
Upon hearing this, the judge was furious and immediately dispatched officers to arrestZhào Dà and his wife.
Zhao Da, guilty of his crime, was so frightened by the sight of the talking basin that he quickly confessed his guilt and received the harshest punishment.
The judge said to the basin, "The truth about your injustice has been revealed. I will send the money thatZhào Dà robbed from you to your home so that your parents can live a good life in their later years. Now your soul can rest in peace."
The basin asked the judge to give Zhāng Biégǔ some award as well, and then said to Zhāng Biégǔ: "Brother, thank you very much, please take care of yourself." After that, the basin never spoke again.
Kids, if you were Zhāng Biégǔ, would you be willing to help the basin? Or do you think we humans should stay away from ghosts?
“I would like to help you. ”
“I would like to help you. ”
Kids, see you next time!

An English Picture Book “Typhoon Holidays”
Hello, this is Teacher Bear, 我是Bear老師。
Kids, I live in Taiwan, so every summer, we're always hit by typhoons. When I was little, my family’s house was even flooded! What’s even more terrifying is that in some places landslides injured people and claimed lives.
Many people look forward to taking typhoon holiday when a typhoon comes, not only because they don’t have to go to work or school, but also because they can avoid being hurt by the wind and rain, just like the child in the story. Let’s listen to her experience!
An English Picture Book “Typhoon Holiday”/
Yi Ling Hsu

“An emergency weather forecast, there was a landslide in Taitung, caused by a typhoon moving north. Taipei will be very affected by tomorrow. It's a very strong typhoon so there will be a typhoon holiday.”
That was my dad on TV, doing his job as a weather forecaster. My mom started to worry about the approaching typhoon.
A typhoon is a powerful tropical storm that brings heavy rains and strong winds, it is the same thing as a hurricane.
There are typhoons in Taiwan every year. When a strong typhoon is expected, a typhoon holiday is declared as it is not safe to go to work or school.
When the last typhoon came, my dad's friend Mr. Jin announced a typhoon holiday but there was not much rain or wind so we played outside all day. Some companies were angry at Mr. Jin because their workers stayed at home.
Once, a weak typhoon was expected. But the winds were very strong and the rains came down like a waterfall.
Children went to school that day, and parents blamed the weather forecaster for not declaring a holiday.
So my dad's forecast always needs to be accurate.
Because of the typhoon holiday, I wouldn't be able to go to school. Until the typhoon was over, I wouldn't be able to see my dad.
What would I do tomorrow?
If the typhoon was very strong, I could read comic books at home. If the typhoon was weak, I could play with my friend Shaoying.
Dad's weather forecast was accurate. Overnight, the wind was so strong, the windows in some houses got broken.
In the afternoon, the rain stopped and the winds became a little breeze, the sun shone over the clouds.
I ran to Shaoying's house and the door rang the doorbell. There was no one there. Maybe the whole family had gone out for a picnic when the weather cleared.
On TV, Dad looked tired. He had been awake all night.
“This typhoon caused huge damage in the southern area of Taitung. It also affected Taipei this morning, but became weaker this afternoon.”
While I was sleeping, a rough beard touched my face. Dad had come home! I cuddled my dad and then went back to sleep.
My family's real holiday came after the typhoon holiday. Dad always had a day off work after busy weather forecasting.
Mom, dad and I decided to go to have lunch in the Taipei 101 building. I was so excited.
Mom and dad bought me a dress and a pair of shoes. I felt like it was my birthday, I wanted to sing and dance.
I said to Mom and Dad, “I hope there are more typhoon holidays.”
They said I shouldn't say that. Many people's homes had been damaged because of the strong typhoons.
Dad said, “But without typhoons we would not have much water. When there are no typhoons, people can't have baths.”
Taipei is a beautiful city, when I looked out from the Taipei 101building, the lights look like stars
that had fallen down.
I'm really proud of my dad. When I grow up, I want to be a weather forecaster just like him.
Kids, now you know that whether or not to grant typhoon holiday is a difficult decision for the government.
But whether there is a typhoon holiday or not, is not the most important thing. The most important thing is that everyone stays safe and avoids the damage caused by typhoon.
And don't just wish for a typhoon because you want a holiday.
“Be careful and be safe.”
“Be careful and be safe.”
Kids, be careful and be safe during typhoons! Let’s also pray for those injured by the typhoon.
See you next time!

A Poem “Summer Night”
Hello, this is Teacher Bear,我是Bear老師。
Kids, the hot summer is here.
Have you ever observed a summer night?
Let's listen to how the poet describes it.
I will read each section once in Chinese and then once in English.
Even if you don’t understand, you can still enjoy the beauty of the poetry’s rhyme.
A Poem “Summer Night”
Translator:Bear Weir
The butterflies and bees returned bearing honey from the flowers.
The flocks of sheep and cattle said goodbye to the fields and went home.
The flaming sun also rolled its fiery wheels back home.
When the street lights came on and bid the village goodnight,
The summer night came gently.
It’s coming! It’s coming!
It climbed down gently from the hillside.
It’s coming! It’s coming!
It climbed down gently from the top of the coconut tree.
The sky was filled with pearls and a big, bright silver coin.
A beautiful summer night!
A cool summer night!
The chicks and ducklings were locked in the pen and slept.
After listening to the grandmother's story,
The little brother and sister also closed their eyes and dreamed.
(The little sister dreamed that she turned into a butterfly and flew east and west in the big garden,
and the little brother dreamed that he turned into a fish and swam in the blue sea.)
Slept, all slept!
In the hazy moonlight, the mountains slept -
In the hazy moonlight, the fields slept.
Only the pumpkins on the melon frame outside the window were still awake,
stretching their vines and gently climbing to the roof.
Only the green river was still awake,
singing softly as it slipped past the arching bridge.
Only the night wind was still awake,
running out of the bamboo forest,
following the fireflies holding lanterns,
traveling happily in the beautiful summer night.
Kids, in the eyes of this poet, is summer night particularly beautiful? Just like a beautiful dream.
Do you want to have a sweet dream on a summer night?
“Wish you sweet dreams!”
“Wish you sweet dreams!”
Kids, I wish you many sweet dreams on summer nights!
See you next time!

Three Brothers and the Redbud Tree
Hello, this is Teacher Bear,我是Bear老師。
Kids, do you have siblings? Do you love each other or do you often argue? Today, I will tell you a story about three brothers.
Once upon a time, there was a family named Tian. The family of five, including parents and three brothers, lived a happy life.
Every evening, when the father came back from farming, the mother finished her housework, and the brothers had finished their work, the family would sit under the old redbud tree in the yard to eat and chat. It was very happy.
This old redbud tree is very tall, with lush branches and leaves. Every spring, the purple-red flowers bloom, as if many butterflies are resting on the tree.
The father often stroked the tree trunk after dinner and said to the three brothers: "This tree! It has been here since the time of my grandfather's grandfather! It’s like a family member, you must take good care of it!"
As he was talking, father liked to point to the trunk and branches of the redbud tree and said, "Look, the trunk is like me and your mother, and the three branches are like you three brothers. We must all live in harmony so that this family can flourish like this tree!"
At this moment, the branches and leaves of the redbud tree swayed in the evening breeze, as if nodding and saying, "Yes! Yes!"
The three brothers each had their own specialities: The eldest was very good at financial management and accounting, the second was good at farming, and the third kept the family's cattle and goats very healthy.
The three brothers usually divided the work and helped each other, so the family business became more and more prosperous.
Eventually, their mother and their father passed away, but the brothers still lived in harmony and cooperated for many years, just like the three branches of the redbud tree, leaning on each other.
This situation made Wang Danian, the neighbor next door, very jealous. He thought: "Well, the three of you are working well together. I can see that your family is the richest in the village. I can't stand it, and I have to find a way to make you break up the family business!"
So, early the next morning, he ran to the eldest brother and said, "Are you worried about money again? I see that you are the most hardworking among the three of you, while your two younger brothers can get away with just a little effort. It's really unfair. Why don't you break up the family business?"
The oldest brother was worried about money. After hearing Wang Danian’s words, he couldn't help but think, "Yes, why not break up the family business?"
Afterwards, Wang Danian ran to the fields and found the second brother and said, "Why are you the only one farming? It's so hard! You don’t have it as easy as your elder brother and younger brother. It's really unfair. Why don't you break up the family business?"
The second brother had been busy in the sun all morning, sweating all over. When he heard what Wang Danian said, he also thought: "Yes! It's really unfair, let's break up the family business!"
In the afternoon, Wang Danian found the third brother and said in a kind voice: "Oh, the cow and goat dung stinks! It's really unfair that your two brothers push all the things they want to avoid onto you. Why don't you break up the family business?"
The third brother had been cleaning up cow and goat dung all morning and was feeling unhappy. When he heard what Wang Danian said, he became even more angry and thought, "Yes, why don't we break up the family business?"
So, as soon as Wang Danian left, the third brother sat under the redbud tree angrily waiting for his two brothers.
After a while, the second brother also came back from the field looking grumpy, and the eldest brother also walked out of the account office with a stern face.
The three of them were all very angry. When they met, they all shouted at the same time: "It's too unfair. I want to divide the family business!" Then they started arguing.
Strangely, while they were arguing, the leaves of the redbud tree suddenly turned from green to yellow, and slowly fell to the ground one by one, and the flowers also began to fall.
But everyone was arguing and no one was in the mood to care about it.
That evening, they divided the family's fields and properties equally. In the end, only the redbud tree in the yard was left and they didn't know what to do with it.
The third brother thought about it and said, "How about this: let's cut it down and saw it into three sections, one for each person, okay?" As he spoke, he pointed at the redbud tree with a saw.
Suddenly, he shouted, "Oh my God, look, why are all the leaves and flowers of this tree gone?"
The three brothers were surprised and scared. The third brother's hands began to tremble, and he was afraid to cut down the tree. Finally, they decided to do it the next day.
However, after returning to their homes, the three of them regretted it more and more. Besides, each of them had only a certain set of skills they could work with. Without cooperation and help between the brothers, developing a career would be hard.
Early the next morning, without any arrangement, they all headed to the redbud tree again.
As soon as the youngest saw his two elder brothers, he cried and said, "Let's not break up the family business, okay?"
The second brother said, " Our parents always wanted us to get along together, so let’s not separate!"
The eldest brother said happily, "That's great! How fortunate that the redbud tree reminded us yesterday. "
As soon as they finished speaking, something strange happened. The redbud tree immediately grew tender green leaf buds, then bloomed, and then grew bigger and bigger, and soon it was as lush as before.
Kids, what do you think after listening to this story?
There is a Chinese saying that "brothers of one mind can cut metal", which means "the power of brotherhood is like a sharp sword that can cut metal"; in other words, "unity is strength".
“Unity is strength.”
“Unity is strength.”
Kids, think about this story the next time you have an argument with your siblings.
See you next time!

I don't mind rain because I know…….without raindrops, there's no rainbow.
By the way: “violet” is usually a scientific term, while “purple” is more often used in daily life.
Kids, without raindrops, there's no rainbow - just as you can’t taste the delicious fruits of success without going through difficulties and hardships.
Now, are you still upset because of the rain?
When facing difficulties, we should learn to find joy in suffering like this kid, and then wait patiently.
In the end, when the difficulties are over, you will definitely feel doubly happy.
Also, when you see others encounter difficulties, don’t forget to give them encouragement and help.
There is a saying in English,英文有句話說:“No pain, no gain.”
請跟Bear老師再說一次: “No pain, no gain.”
Kids, No pain, no gain. Next time you encounter difficulties, don’t be afraid, wait patiently for your rainbow!
See you next time!

Shamed Rainbow
Hello, this is Teacher Bear, 我是Bear 老師。
Kids, in the last episode, a beautiful rainbow appeared at the end. Do you know how a rainbow is formed?
Taiwan’s aboriginal people have a thought-provoking legend about rainbows. Let’s listen to it together.
Once upon a time, in a mountain tribe in Taiwan, there lived a very poor couple. The husband was called Mada and the wife was called Hongyin.
Mada hunted hard outside every day, but his luck was bad, so he often returned home empty-handed.
Hong Yin stayed at home all day doing nothing and was unwilling to learn weaving like other women in the tribe to make clothes for herself and her husband.
As a result, the couple's life became more and more difficult. In the end, they didn't even have a piece of clothing that was not dirty or torn.
Winter was coming, and Mada said to his wife: The weather is getting colder and colder. Could you please make a few more warm clothes for us to get through the winter? I will really try my best to hunt and bring back more food.
Hong Yin replied: Well, it is certainly shameful to wear ragged clothes every day. I'll start weaving tomorrow.
But the next day, Hongyin just put off working. She finally sat down in front of the loom … then, after weaving a little bit, she went back to daydreaming or resting.
After several days, Hongyin hadn't even managed to weave a small piece of cloth, let alone make a warm piece of clothing for Mada who was out hunting.
Although Mada was disappointed, he couldn't bear to blame his wife.
On this day, Mada was very lucky and brought a lot of food home. As soon as he entered the door, he saw Hongyin wearing a new dress.
Mada: Where…where did you get this dress? I saw you weaving only a little bit of cloth these last few days.
Hongyin: Someone…someone gave it to me.
Madea: Oh? !
Without asking any more questions, Mada went to make a fire and prepared to roast the meat.
A few days later, Mada saw Hongyin wearing a new dress again, but Hongyin still said that it was given to her by someone else.
Mada thought to himself: I heard that someone in the tribe had their clothes stolen recently. Could it be Hongyin who stole them? No, impossible!
Mada didn't want to think about it anymore. He couldn’t believe that Hongyin was a thief.
One day, Mada caught a hare and ran home happily to prepare a big meal with Hongyin.
As soon as he entered the house, Mada was stunned. Hongyin was wearing a beautiful dress with stripes of seven colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and purple, which made Hongyin look extremely beautiful.
To see such a beautiful wife, Mada could not feel happy, because on his way home today, he heard that the tribal princess's wedding dress was stolen. Could it be…
Mada: Hongyin! This dress…was…stolen, right?
Hong Yin: I just borrowed it to try on. Don’t you think I’m beautiful?
Mada: Hongyin, you feel ashamed to wear rags, but don’t you feel ashamed to steal things?
Hong Yin: Why can the princess wear beautiful clothes, but I can’t?
Madea: You can weave one for yourself!
Hongyin: Our family is so poor that we can’t even afford beautiful thread. How can I weave?
Mada: So we have to work together! Starting tomorrow, I will work harder at hunting, and you will work harder at weaving, okay? Then we will have something to trade. Return the dress.
Hong Yin: But, but I can’t bear to return this beautiful dress.
Mada: If we are discovered, we will both be punished!
Hongyin: As long as you don’t say anything, no one will know.
Mada: But the gods will know! Return it tomorrow and apologize to everyone!
Hongyin really didn't want to do what Mada said. She really couldn't bear to part with this beautiful dress, and besides, she didn't have the courage to apologize.
That night, while Mada was asleep, she crept out of the house, intending to wear that beautiful dress, cross a mountain, and escape to a place where no one knew her.
As she climbed higher and higher, she was suddenly hit by a storm, with lightning, thunder, and strong gusts of wind.
At this time, Mada also woke up, found that Hongyin was missing, and immediately chased after her.
Madea: Hongyin! Hongyin! Where are you? Come back! Hongyin! Hongyin!
Suddenly, in the lightning, Mada saw Hongyin, but a gust of wind blew over…
Hongyin: Ah~~~~~~~~~
Just as Mada was about to chase after her, he heard a scream, and Hongyin was blown away by the wind, disappearing without a trace.
Madea: Hongyin! Hongyin!
When the people in the tribe heard Mada's crying, they all ran out to help Mada find Hongyin.
The wind and rain slowly stopped. At that moment, the sun showed its face slightly and it was daybreak.
Someone noticed a beautiful ribbon appearing in the air, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and purple, and shouted: "Isn't this the princess's new wedding dress?" Everyone pointed at the ribbon in the sky.
Mada knew that it was Hongyin who had transformed, and he cried silently.
The sunlight became stronger and stronger, and the rainbow quickly disappeared, as if Hongyin was afraid of being discovered as a thief and hid away in shame.
Kids, what do you think after listening to this story? If you were Hongyin and wanted to wear that beautiful dress, what would you do?
In fact, when I was a child, I wanted to dress my dolls in beautiful clothes, but my parents could not spend so much money to buy them for me, so I used old clothes or handkerchiefs to make new dresses for my dolls.
Because of constant experimentation, I developed my tailoring skills. When I grew up, I could not only make clothes for myself, but also for others.
And you? Do you want something but can't get it?
Believe me, this is not necessarily a bad thing. On the contrary, it is a good opportunity for you to develop new abilities.
red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple.
red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple.
Kids, next time you see a beautiful rainbow, think about this story and remind yourself to be diligent and learn more.
See you next time!

An English Picture Book “When the sun goes home”
Hello, this is Teacher Bear, 我是Bear老師。
I'm back! I miss you guys so much! Thank you for waiting.
This break time is very important to me.
Actually, It's not just me who needs a break; everyone does sometimes. Even the sun needs a break!
Why? Let’s listen to what the sun feels!
An English Picture Book “When the sun goes home”/
Momoko Abe
Translator/翻譯:Bear Weir
Every day from dawn to dusk, the sun shone high in the sky smiling his very best smile.
He knew people loved to see him and he worked hard to make them happy.
At the end of each day, the sun made a wonderful sunset, then he handed the sky over to the moon before going back to his home beyond the horizon.
When the sun got home he ate his dinner, did a jigsaw puzzle, and then he practiced his smile so he
would be extra especially bright the next day.
“I must keep up the good work.” he said to himself.
“My smile has to be perfect.” And for a long time, that's how things went.
What nobody realized was that beneath the sun's bright smile, he didn't always feel so sunny.
It was lonely up there in the sky. If only someone would smile back at him, but they never did.
“How lucky the moon is.” thought the sun. “She always has the stars for company. I wish I had a friend.”
Spring turned to summer. Every day, the sun shone high in the sky.
But as he watched people having fun below, he began to feel sad.
“I think I'll go home early today.” he thought to himself. “It doesn't really matter, no one notices me anyway. Smiling was just too hard.”
But the next morning, the moon came to knock on sun's door.
“Because you left so early yesterday, I had to look after the sky for longer.” She said angrily.
“Come out, sun! It's time to start shining. Everyone is counting on you.”
The sun felt very heavy inside. “The moon is right.” he thought.
“I have to smile.”
So the sun went back to the sky. He took a deep breath, and smiled, and smiled, and smiled.
“I must keep smiling.” he said to himself. “I must keep smiling.”
But as he smiled and shone, the sun began to feel too hot. Then he started to feel very tired.
Everything around him was spinning.
“Oh, no!” and suddenly the ground was getting closer and closer.
The sun was falling out of the sky.
“Help!” cried the sun. “Someone please… help!”
Then all of a sudden, the sun felt cool soft cushions beneath him.
“We've got you!” said the clouds. “Get some rest while we rain.”
“But I can't let everyone down.” cried the sun. “I have to shine, I have to smile.”
“No one can smile all the time.” said the clouds.
“People need rain just as much as they need sunshine. Trust us.”
So while the clouds rained, the sun closed his eyes and rested.
He felt a gentle breeze on his burning cheeks, and inside he felt warm and happy.
No one had ever cared about him like this before, and it wasn't long before the sun felt ready to shine again.
He touched the clouds as they drifted away. He smiled his big, glorious smile which met with the rain and made……a rainbow!
The sun was still smiling that night when he handed the sky over to the moon.
“Good night! Sun.” said the moon, smiling back at him. “Did you have a good day?”
“A very good day, thank you, Moon.” said the sun.
And as the stars twinkled goodnight, he went home feeling very happy.
And now, whenever he doesn't feel so sunny, the sun knows just what to do…
Kids, each of us is like the sun, working hard to fulfill our responsibilities and to meet the expectations of others.
If even the sun needs a break, what about us humans?
Taking a break does not mean being lazy. Taking a break is for accomplishing a longer journey. Taking a break is to take care of yourself so that you can take care of more people.
“I need to take a break.”
“I need to take a break.”
Kids, are you tired? Take a break!
See you next time!

An English Picture Book “I Want To Be Big”
Hello, this is Teacher Bear, 我是Bear老師。
Kids, do you often think, "I want to be big!"

I'm flying. I'm flying to find big.
I'm small. But I can fly higher than a peacock.
Do you know why a peacock is a big bird with small wings and I'm a small bird with big wings?
Charlie keeps flying.
This is a big place for sure.
There's a big pond.

Hi, moose, I'm Charlie, I like your big antlers but they scare me.
Don't be scared, I don't hurt birds.
You're so big
How can I be as big as you?
(Moose:)Perch on my antlers.
I'm perching here, and I feel big.
Wow!
哇!
But when moose starts to run, it's scary, so I fly off.
Whoa! I'm moving on, I touch down near a pond, I watch a big fish dive and jump.
I shout:You're so big. How can I be as big as you?
I'm a big fish in a little pond.
Splash!
啪!
Fish leaves with a splash.
Whoa! Most of the water rolls off my wings. I'm able to fly away. Lucky me!
I land in a tree and find myself face to face with a woolly lamb.
How can I be big?
No answer from the lamb.
How can I be big? As big as you?
The lamb asks : “Why do you want to be big?”
I don't really know why I want to be big.
I just know it.
I know I'm tired of being small.
I know I'm tired of being scared, and tired of wanting to be like someone else.
I hear a growly voice, am I about to be chased or eaten?
(Dog:) Don't be scared, I won't hurt you, how can I help you?
You're so big and I'm so small. I really want to be big.
(Dog:) I have an idea.
I'm listening.
(Dog:) Fly up up up into the sky. Fly as high as you can then look down.
That's scary. It will not be easy.
(Dog:) If you want to be big, it's the best way.
Okay, I'll try.
(Dog:)Sit on my head for take off. I'll give you a running start.
(Dog:)Off you go! Goodbye! Have a good flight.
I'm flying. I'm flying higher and higher.
I am looking up, not down.
Now, I am ready, Ready to look down.
I'm looking down.
Moose is small. Fish is small. I am big, bigger than everyone.
Dog is small. Lamb is small. Everything is small.
Wow! I am Charlie. A small bird.
And I just felt like the biggest creature in the whole world.
Awesome!
Kids, do you think Charlie’s method is good?
But if you can't fly high, how can you be big quickly?
I can teach you the best way - which is to watch more, listen more, read more, and learn more. You will find that even though your body has not been big yet, you can see farther, you are braver, and have a clearer understanding of your direction.
That's because the more you know, the better you are able to handle things, and of course the more powerful and bigger you become.
“Knowledge is power.”
“Knowledge is power.”
Kids, learning more will help you see farther and make you bigger and more powerful!
See you next time!

The Oriental Legend of the Flower Narcissus
Hello, this is Teacher Bear, 我是Bear老師。
Kids, in the last episode, I introduced you to the Western legend of Narcissus. Today, I will introduce you to the origin of the Flower Narcissus in Chinese culture.
Once upon a time, in a small village in southern China, there lived an old lady and her son Dalong.
They only had a small piece of land, so the harvest was not much, and coupled with various disasters, they lived a very hard life.
One day, Dalong found that the food at home was almost gone, so he decided to go out to find food.
The old lady sighed, sent Dalong away, and said to herself: "Alas, I wonder if Dalong will be lucky today? I hope he can find something to eat."
The old lady was hungry and was reluctant to eat the little food left at home because she was worried that if Dalong returned empty-handed, there would be nothing left to eat.
It was getting dark, and the old lady suddenly remembered: "Oh! Dalong will be very hungry when he comes home, I have to prepare some food for him first."
Although the rice container at home was almost empty, the old lady still tried hard to dig out a little rice from the corners, just enough to cook a bowl of rice.
The old lady happily cooked the rice and waited for Dalong to come home for dinner.
Not long after, she heard footsteps. The old lady opened the door excitedly, only to see an old beggar in tattered clothes.
"Madam, I'm hungry! Please give me something to eat!"
"But…but…" The old lady was in a dilemma, because if she gave her only bowl of rice to the old beggar, then Dalong would be hungry when he returned home if he didn't find anything to eat.
The old beggar pleaded again, "Madam, please, I haven't eaten for several days!"
The old lady couldn't bear it, so she invited the old beggar into the house and gave him the bowl of rice.
The old lady: "Come, you can eat now!"
The old beggar grabbed the bowl of fragrant white rice and gobbled it up, finishing the whole bowl in no time!
Old beggar: "Thank you! That was so tasty."
Unexpectedly, the old lady suddenly started crying, and the old beggar asked nervously: "Madam, what's wrong?"
Old lady: "To be honest, this is the last bowl of rice our family had. I intended to leave it for my son…"
Old beggar: "Oh! I'm so sorry! I'm so sorry! But I've already eaten the rice, how can I give it back to you?"
Seeing the old lady still crying, the old beggar stood up, embarrassed, apologized, and walked outside. He walked to the pond on the land in front of the old lady's house, and vomited.
When the old lady saw this, she hurried out to comfort the old beggar. But when she walked out of the door, the old beggar suddenly disappeared.
Not long after, when Dalong returned home, the old lady told Dalong what happened.
Dalong comforted his mother and said, "Mom, it's okay. Look, I found some wild vegetables and fruits, and dug up some sweet potatoes. It's enough for us to eat for two or three days. As for the old man, I will go out tomorrow to help you find him and see how he is doing."
That night, the old lady was worried about the old beggar and couldn't sleep all night.
The next morning, Dalong shouted in surprise as he stepped out of the house: "Mom! Come out and see! There are so many flowers growing by the pond in our field!"
The old lady ran out and saw the beautiful white flowers. She remembered: "This is where the old man vomited the rice yesterday. How did it turn into flowers? Is he a god?"
The old lady and Dalong were very happy to see this miracle. They decided to give the flower a name.
The old lady said: "The gods in the sky are called ‘Tiānxiān’ and this flower grows by the water, so let's call it ‘Shuǐxiān’".
By the way, ‘Tiānxiān’ means ‘celestial gods’ in Chinese, and ‘Shuǐxiān’ means water gods.
So Dalong tidied up his fields, and soon the land was full of beautiful Narcissus Flowers, and he often took some to the market to sell. In this way, Dalong and his mother's lives gradually improved.
Kids, the legends about the flower Narcissus are so different in the West and the East. Isn’t it interesting?
The most notable thing about the old lady and Dalong is that they can empathize with others and are willing to help, even though they are poor and have a hard life.
I believe that once their lives become healthier, they will help more people.
“We need to put ourselves in the shoes of others.”
“We need to put ourselves in the shoes of others.”
Kids, I hope you like this story.
See you next time!

The Western Legend of Narcissus
Hello,this is teacher Bear,我是Bear老師。
Kids, do you remember that I said that during Chinese New Year, Chinese people like to put a pot of narcissus at home?
In fact, "narcissus" and "daffodil" can both be translated as " Shuǐxiān Huā " in Chinese, but they are actually two similar but different flowers.
"Narcissus" is smaller and usually white, but there are also yellow or orange ones.
"Daffodil" is larger and yellow, and is also called "Western Shuǐxiān Huā ".
In fact, I didn’t know that there is a yellow narcissus, so in episode 85, I translated “narcissus” into “white Shuǐxiān Huā”. I would like to apologize to everyone.
See, I’m always learning, and hopes that you will also keep learning and not be afraid of making mistakes.
Did your family buy a narcissus houseplant this year?
Narcissus is very beautiful, and both the East and the West have legends about it.
Today, I would like to introduce you to the Western legend about narcissus. Let’s listen to it together!
According to Greek mythology, Narcissus was the child of the river god Cephissus and the water nymph Liriope.
After Narcissus was born, the prophet Tiresias told Liriope that Narcissus would live a long life … as long as he never saw his own face.
So everyone protected him very carefully and didn't let him get close to the water, lest he see his own reflection.
So although Narcissus grew up to be the most handsome man in Greece, he never knew what he looked like.
Many women loved Narcissus because he was so handsome, but he had no feelings for any of them and rejected their love ruthlessly.
As a result, the love these women had turned to hate, and they asked the goddess of vengeance Nemesis to punish Narcissus.
Unexpectedly, Nemesis agreed to their request.
And so, when Narcissus was out hunting one day, Nemesis deliberately lured Narcissus to the edge of a pool so that Narcissus could see his own handsome face.
As a result, Narcissus fell in love with his own reflection. He thought it was another person and wanted to reach out and touch it, but he couldn't.
Narcissus was very sad. He went to the pool every day to see the person he fell in love with. In the end, he could no longer leave the pool and died of grief.
Later, a beautiful flower grew at the place where Narcissus died. People called that flower “narcissus”. In Chinese we called it “Shuǐxiān Huā”
"Narcissus’s name is now associated with people who have too much admiration for themselves. If you think someone is narcissistic, you can call him a " zìliàn kuáng " in Chinese and a "narcissist" in English.
Kids, what do you think of this story?
Are there any uncles or aunts around you who are troubled by romance problems?
Do you think it was right for those women to seek revenge on Narcissus for his rejection?
If you want to take revenge on someone because you can't get the love you want, is that true love?
Narcissus died of heartbreak because he couldn't get the person he loved. Do you think he cherished himself?
I know that you are still young, and these questions may be too difficult for you, but you can start by observing the situations of adults, talking to your elders, and then thinking about them slowly.
Bear
I hope that when you grow up, you will be able to love others and accept rejection.
The most important thing is that you must first learn to love yourself, but loving yourself is different from narcissism.
"Love yourself" means treating yourself as you would treat someone you love.
Narcissism means only thinking that you are the most good looking, the best, and the most important person around.
I hope that you love yourself, but don’t be narcissistic!
“Remember to love yourself.”
“Remember to love yourself.”
Kids, although we may not be the most good looking, the best, or the most important, we all deserve to be loved, so please treat yourself as you would the people you love, cherish yourself, and never do anything to hurt yourself.
See you next time!

Married Women Return to Their Parents' Home
Hello, this is teacher Bear, 我是Bear老師。
Kids, today is the second day of Chinese New Year. Traditionally, it is the day when married women return to their parents' home. Are you at your grandmother's house with your mother today?
Today Amy also went back to her grandmother's home with her mother, father, and older brother. Let's hear about their situation!
Amy/David:
Amy/David: Grandma!
Dad: Mom!
Grandma: A-Ming, it’s been so long since I saw my son-in-law!
Dad: Mom, you look well!
Grandma: Haha! Of course, I do exercise every day.
Mother: Mom, A-Ming and I will just bring the food to the kitchen to prepare lunch.
Grandma: Okay, then I’ll chat with my grandchildren in the living room.
Amy:
Amy: Where’s my aunt?
Grandma: Your aunt knew you were coming back, so she went out to buy you something nice to eat and fun things. She’ll be back soon.
David: Grandma, just now we asked mom why she always visits you on the second day of Chinese New Year. Mom told us to ask you - she said you know everything.
Amy:
Amy: Yes! Mom said you are very knowledgeable!
Grandma: Haha, is that so? Okay, sit down, sit down, and I will tell you.
Amy、David:
Amy, David: Yeah.
Grandma: So why do married women return to their parents' home on the second day of Chinese New Year? Most people say it started during the Ming Dynasty in China more than 600 years ago.
David:
David: Oh, that’s the Ming Dynasty of Zhū Yuánzhāng, the founding emperor?
Grandma: Yes, it was during the time of Zhū Yuánzhāng.
Grandma: Zhū Yuánzhāng had a favorite daughter named Princess Anqing, but unfortunately, after she got married, her marriage was not happy because of the bad character of her husband – the ‘Fùmǎ’.
Amy:
Amy: What is a " Fùmǎ "?
Grandma: In Chinese, " Fùmǎ " means "the princess's husband."
Amy:
Amy: I see~
Grandma: Because Princess Anqing’s marriage was unhappy, every New Year she missed the lively and warm atmosphere of the palace – so, on New Year's Eve, she disregarded tradition and sneaked back to the palace.
Amy:
Amy: Why could she not?
David: Of course not in ancient times! Traditionally, during Chinese New Year, a daughter-in-law should stay at her husband's home and serve her parents-in-law. How could she sneak back to her parents' home?
Amy:古板!
Amy: How old-fashioned.
Grandma: Haha, that’s really how it was in ancient times. So although Emperor Zhū Yuánzhāng loved his daughter very much, he had to send her back. Unexpectedly, on the first day of Chinese New Year, Princess Anqing came back again!
David: Haha, just like Amy, does whatever she likes.
Amy:
Amy: David, you are not as old-fashioned as Zhū Yuánzhāng, are you?
Grandma: Your brother is just joking. We won’t quarrel during the New Year.
Amy吐舌頭/ Amy sticks her tongue out.
David:
David: Okay, okay! sorry. Grandma, so then what happened?
Grandma: Zhū Yuánzhāng was very angry and sent Princess Anqing back again, but he couldn't bear it in his heart.
Grandma: So he warned Princess Anqing that she must serve her parents-in-law well on New Year's Eve and the first day of every New Year, and would only be allowed to return to the palace for New Year's greetings on the second day.
Amy:
Amy: And then?
Grandma: In the end, Princess Anqing finally obeyed. After this story spread, married women began to regard returning to their parents’ home on the second day of Chinese New Year as a traditional custom, which has been observed until now.
David:
David: Oh~~that’s why.
Amy: Grandma, but what if I get married and want to go home to be with my dad and mom on New Year’s Eve?
David:
David: They say if a married woman goes back to her parents’ home on New Year’s Eve it will bring bad luck to them.
Amy:
Amy: Superstition! David, education is wasted on you!
Grandma: Well, rules and traditions are all set by people. Modern society isn’t so conservative. As long as you can communicate well with your husband and parents-in-law in future, I’m sure there will be no problem.
Amy:
Amy: Otherwise, I can just not get married like my aunts, then there will be no problem.
Grandma: Haha, you can’t know now whether you will get married or not. Marriage is destined by heaven, so it’s best to let nature take its course.
Amy: David, if your wife wants to go back home on New Year’s Eve, will you agree? Or me?
David:
David: Of course I will say “yes” ! How about we take turns to accompany dad and mom on New Year’s Eve?
Grandma: David is such a good kid. But you’re still young, and we don’t know how society will go in the future, so it’s too early to think about these things. Anyway, a harmonious family is the key to success. If everyone communicates well, nothing will be impossible.
Amy: David, you already promised. So if I want to come back to mom and dad’s home on New Year’s Eve in future, you can’t chase me away.
David:
David: I wouldn’t dare. You’re such a grumpy girl!
Amy:
Amy: Humph! Just as long as you know.
Grandma: Haha! Come on, let’s go to the kitchen and see if your parents need any help!
Amy、David:
Amy, David: Yeah!
Kids, what’s it like for your family?
Although it is traditional for married women to return to their parents' home on the second day of Chinese New Year, as Amy's grandmother said, rules and traditions are set by people, and some are just superstitions. The most important thing is communication and mutual understanding between family members, then everything will be fine, do you agree?
Or do you think following tradition is the most important thing?
Feel free to leave a message to me and tell me what you think.
Let’s hope people won’t argue over conservative rules over New Year.
“Wish you a New Year filled with love, peace and good fortune.”
“Wish you a New Year filled with love, peace and good fortune.”
Kids, I wish you good luck in the Year of the Snake!
See you next time!

Buying Things for Chinese New Year
Hello, this is teacher Bear,我是Bear老師。
Kids, in a few days, it will be the Lunar New Year. This is a major festival for the Chinese. Every household has begun to buy things for New Year. Is your family the same?
Let’s hear what Amy and her mother bought for New Year, and see if your home is the same as theirs?
Tomorrow is New Year's Eve. This morning, Amy’s mother took Amy to the market to buy things needed during the New Year.
There are so many people in the market, twice as many as usual.
They walked and walked, and stopped in front of a stall selling chūnlián, which is a decorative piece of red paper on which is written an auspicious phrase.
Amy: I know that the chūnlián posted in our house were all written by grandpa, but this year is the Year of the Snake. I want to buy a chūnlián with a cute snake pattern. Is that okay?
Mom: Of course! Pick one for yourself.
Amy: OK, this one, "Golden snake attracts wealth". Mom, look how cute this golden snake is!
Mom: OK, we’ll get this one.
Amy
After Amy and her mother bought chūnlián, they walked to the fruit stall.
Mom: We have to buy mandarins and apples. Do you know why we buy these two fruits?
Amy: I know, because the fruit “mandarin” in Chinese is “júzi”, “jú” sounds like “jí” of the Chinese word “jíxiáng”, which means “lucky”. The fruit "apple" in Chinese is “píngguǒ”, “píng” sounds like “píng” of the Chinese word “píng'ān”, which means “safe”. So eating mandarins and apples during the Chinese New Year makes us lucky and safe.
Mom: Correct, our Amy knows so much. Come on, help me choose.
Amy:
Amy: OK!
Next to the fruit stall was a flower stall. Amy’s mother looked at it for a while and picked a narcissus in a pot.
Mom: Traditionally, narcissus or daffodils are placed in the house during the Chinese New Year.
Amy:
Amy: They are so beautiful! But why narcissus or daffodils?
Mom: First, it’s because during the Chinese New Year, it’s the season when narcissus and daffodils bloom. The second reason is that narcissus and daffodils in Chinese has the word “xiān” in it , which means "good spirits". During Chinese New Year, of course everyone hopes that there will be good spirits at home to bring good luck. The last reason is because the Chinese pronunciation of “narcissus” and “daffodils” sounds like “shéi xiān fā”, in Chinese which means “who gets rich first”. See, that’s why people love this kind of flower, don’t you think so?
Amy:喔!原來! 我!我!
Amy: Oh! That’s why! Who gets rich first? Me! Me! I'll get rich first!
Mom: OK, I’ll give you a big red envelope this year.
Amy:
Amy: Thank you, Mommy. I hope I receive more lucky money this year.
After buying the flowers, they walked to the rice cake stall.
Amy:
Amy: Yeah! Fried rice cakes are my favorite.
Mom: I know, let’s buy a bigger one.
Amy: “Rice cake” in Chinese is pronounced as “niángāo”, this “gāo” sounds like the word “gāo” of the phrase “bù bù gāo shēng”, which means “moving up step by step”. After eating it, I will get better and better, so I have to eat more.
Mom:No problem, it’s okay to eat some sweets during the Chinese New Year, but don’t eat too much in normal times!
Amy:
Amy: I know.
Next to the rice cake stall was a candy stall. Amy’s mother hesitated, but then grabbed a handful of candies.
Mom: It’s not good to eat too much candy, but during the Chinese New Year, everyone should eat something sweet to get happiness and good luck. It also gives guests who come to our home a sweet feeling.
Amy:
Amy: Yeah! Thank you Mom.
Amy and her mother looked at the many beautifully wrapped candies and wanted to buy them all. After choosing for quite a while, they finally filled a bag.
Mom: Oh, we need to buy a fish.
Amy: I know, the Chinese word "fish" is pronounced as “yú”, this “yú” sounds like the word “yú” of the phrase “nián nián yǒu yú”, which means that there is plenty of food and clothing, and with extra every year.
Mom: Yes, that’s right. But it’s better to get a fresh fish. I will buy it early tomorrow morning! In addition to fish, we also need to buy a lot of meat and vegetables tomorrow. Come on, let’s go home first!
Amy:
Amy: OK. We have to eat big fish and meat during the Chinese New Year, but what about vegetarians?
Mom: They can eat fish or meat made from tofu instead!
Amy:
Amy: Oh~~I see. My teacher told us that the New Year’s Eve dinner must be sumptuous.
Mom: Yes, no matter how poor a family is, the New Year’s Eve dinner should be as sumptuous as possible to feel like celebrating New Year. In addition, the family also gets together to have New Year's Eve dinner. It's a pity that your aunt is working abroad and can't come back this year.
Amy: Our teacher said that according to custom, we should leave a pair of chopsticks and a bowl for those family members who can’t go home for New Year’s Eve dinner.
Mom: This was true in ancient times, but now that communications are developed, when we have New Year’s Eve dinner, let’s use video chat to talk with your aunt while eating!
Amy: In the past, I would sit in front of the TV with my aunt to stay up late together. This year, can I also watch TV and not go to bed until midnight?
Mom: Of course! Anyway, many people start setting off firecrackers at midnight on New Year’s Eve, and you can’t fall asleep anyway because of the noise, so just stay up until dawn!
Amy:
Amy: Yeah! I really can’t wait for New Year!
Kids, are your families ready for New Year? Do you also help with cleaning and posting chūnlián?
You can’t wait, right?
Happy New Year, kids, may you get rich and may you receive lots of lucky money!

An English Picture Book “HAPPY NEW YEAR, POOH!”
Hello, this is Teacher Bear.
Kids, I can’t believe that the whole year has come to an end so quickly, and 2025 is about to arrive.
Time flies too fast.
It’s not just me - Winnie the Pooh and his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood were also very surprised to find that a whole year had passed.
Let's hear how they faced this surprising discovery.
An English Picture Book “HAPPY NEW YEAR, POOH!”/
Kathleen Zoehfeld
Illustrator/插畫家: Robbin Cuddy
Translator/翻譯: Bear Weir
“December thirty-first,” said Pooh. “Time to turn the page of my calendar.” Pooh lifted the December page.
“Hmmm.” He scratched behind his ear.
“No more pages.” “No more months?!” cried Piglet. “That's t-terrible!”
“Oh, Pooh's calendar is just broken.” said Tigger.
“Let’s go look at mine. Tiggers’ calendars are never broken.”
Tigger bounced into his house and flipped up the December page. He gasped. His tail drooped.
“No more months! It's true. What are we going to do?”
“We could make a poem to say good-bye to the months.” said Pooh.
“It's too sad.” said Piglet. “I can't think of anything to say.”
“You can't think a poem, really,” said Pooh. “It just has to come to you.” He sat down and looked at his paws.
At last he looked up and said: “Good-bye, January, with snow and frost.
“Oh d-dear,” said Piglet, “Our whole year is lost!”
“That's good,” said Pooh, “It rhymes very nicely.”
Pooh continued. “No more February Valentine sweets.” “Good-bye, March, with winds and sleets.”
“Sleets?” asked Tigger.
“Well, you try.” said Pooh.
Tiggers don't do poetry,” said Tigger.
“Tiggers can do Tigger poetry.” said Pooh.
So Tigger began, “Ahem,” “I’ll miss April's drippy rains, and May-sy’s crazy daisy chains.”
“Did I rhyme it enough?” asked Tigger.
“Yes,” said Pooh, “you rhymed enough.”
“This is fun.” said Tigger.
“I'm feeling sadder and sadder.” said Piglet. He wiped a tear from his cheek.
“You try,” said Pooh. “There's nothing like a bit of poetry to make you feel better.”
“I’ll miss June,” sniffed Piglet, “when the Wood was green, and, sniff, all the Julys that
might have been.”
“Been what?” asked Tigger.
“Well…… warm and picnicky,” said Piglet.
“Mmmm,” smiled Tigger.
They sat quietly for a while. Then Pooh brightened. “I think the rest of the poem has come to me,” he
said.
“Good-bye, August, hot and lazy.”
“Farewell, September, cool and hazy.”
“October's colors we’ll always remember, and the pumpkin pies of chill November.”
“To December, farewell, we'll miss your cheer ─ our favorite month of all the year!”
“We don't have to say good-bye to December,” said Tigger, “We're stuck here forever.”
“Oh, yes,” said Pooh. “I forgot,”
“F-forever.” said Piglet.
Toot, toot! Ring a ling ling! Bangety bang!
Piglet, Pooh and Tigger heard these strange sounds coming from Rabbit's house.
“Maybe rabbit's in trouble!” cried Tigger. “Let's go!”
Rabbit's house was filled with balloons and colorful streamers.
Toot, toot! Eeyore was trumpeting on a little horn.
Ring a ling ling! Rabbit was ringing a bell.
Bangety bang! Christopher Robin was drumming on a pot with a wooden spoon while kanga, Roo, and Owl looked on cheerfully.
“I wonder why they're so happy.” whispered Pooh.
“They haven't heard the sad news.” whispered Piglet.
“Well, it's our bounding duty to tell them,” said Tigger. he bounced over to Rabbit's calendar and lifted the December page.
“I'm sorry to spoil the festivities,” he said. “but we seem to have a big problem.”
“There will be no more months in the Hundred-Acre Wood.” said Pooh.
Piglet wiped another tear.
“Well I suppose it's to be expected.” said Eeyore. “Gaiety song and dance ─ it doesn't work for
everyone, you know.”
“Don't worry, Eeyore,” said Christopher Robin. “of course there will be more months.”
“There will?” asked Pooh.
Christopher Robin handed Pooh a pot. “Come on! Help us ring in the New Year!” he cried.
“New Year?” asked Pooh. “You mean we have a whole new year ahead of us?”
“Yes!” said Christopher Robin.
“With a new January and a new February?” asked Pooh.
“And a whole new March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November and December?” cried Tigger.
“Yes!” said Christopher Robin. “And look, I've got new calendars for each one of us.”
“Wow!” said Pooh, “they're beautiful!”
“They're fantabulous!” cried Tigger. “This is so great─we should have a party to celebrate!”
“That's exactly what we're doing,” said Rabbit. He gave Tigger a horn.
“There now─no more moping around! We've got to welcome in the New Year with a happy noise.”
Piglet smiled quietly. He thought about the picnics and pumpkin pies he'd be sharing with his friends in the New Year.
“It's a very friendly thing to say good-bye to the old year and welcome in the new one with your friends.” he said.
“Yes!” said Pooh, giving Piglet a little hug. “That's just the way it should be.”
Kids, are you ready for the New Year party?
“Let's celebrate the New Year!”
“Let's celebrate the New Year!”
Kids, although we are about to have a brand new year, time flies by, if we don’t cherish it, we will definitely regret it if we achieve nothing by the end of next year.
We must seize the opportunities of the new year and make good use of our time.
Happy New Year!
See you in 2025!
See you~

Gifts From Animals
Hello, this is Teacher Bear, 我是Bear老師。
Kids, Christmas is coming, you’ve started looking forward to gifts, right?
Besides Santa Claus, who else do you think will give you gifts? Let’s listen to this story together!
Gifts From Animals/
Story by Tony Weir/作者:Tony Weir
Translated by Bear Weir/翻譯:Bear Weir
This is Toad. Toad is a rain toad.
Normally she looks like a potato, but today it rained, so she looks more like a toad.
Her best friends are Monkey and Parrot. They always meet to talk together about life and interesting things.
“What are you hoping Santa will bring you for Christmas?” said Monkey to Toad.
Toad scratched her nose and thought about it.
“He hasn’t brought me anything for Christmas before.” she said. “He probably won’t bring anything this year either.”
Parrot looked at Monkey sternly.“You shouldn’t hang around with those humans so often.” she said. “They have some very funny ideas.”
Monkey looked hurt. “I like them.” he said. “They take selfies with me. And sometimes they give me a banana”.
“Anyway,” said Toad, “I don’t think Santa brings presents to animals. Only humans.”
Parrot agreed. “That’s true.” she said. “Humans invented Santa to bring them presents.”
“I don’t think that’s quite right.” said Monkey.
Their discussion was interrupted by a sudden loud crash and a shower of leaves and branches.
“Ouch!” said someone in a red-and-white costume on the ground. Behind him were four reindeer and a sleigh, which was upside down.
“Hello!” said the fat man, getting up. “I’m rather lost. Can you tell me where I am?”
Toad and Monkey and Parrot looked at each other, and at the fat man.
“It’s our jungle.” said Parrot.
The fat man sighed. “That doesn’t really help much. Do you know the way to the North Pole?”
“Afraid not.” said Monkey. “Are you Santa? Why are you in the jungle?”
“Well, there are some humans here.” said Santa. “They’re studying monkeys. I brought them some presents. And yes, of course I’m Santa. And now I’m a bit lost.”
Monkey was embarrassed. “I’m sorry we can’t help.” he said. “We don’t often go to places like the North Pole, you see.”
“That’s all right.” said Santa. “I’m sure I’ll figure it out. By the way, what were you all hoping to get for Christmas?”
Parrot looked surprised. “I didn’t know you bring presents for animals.”
“Well, I don’t normally.” replied Santa. “Humans invented me a long time ago. I think they’ve forgotten why. Now I deliver presents. So since I’m here, would you like something?”
Santa picked up his sack and jiggled it.
Parrot and Monkey and Toad thought about what they might like, but they couldn’t think of anything.
“We don’t really need anything. These are my friends here. We have a happy life in our jungle. I like bananas, but if I want bananas I can go to find them.”
Santa smiled. “So I think you know why I only bring presents to humans.”
He pulled a basket of nuts and fruit and snacks from his sack of presents.
“Here!” he said. “I think all you need is something to share.”
Santa pushed his sleigh the right way up, and climbed in.
“Merry Christmas everyone!”, he shouted, and the sleigh lifted high into the air.
They watched him disappear into the distance, and Monkey looked in the basket for bananas.
“I hope he brought the humans some nice presents.” he said. “I’ll visit them later and have a look”.
“I’ll come with you.” said Toad. “I’ve never seen humans before.”
“Why don’t you bring them a Christmas present yourself?” said Parrot. “Here – humans eat nuts, don’t they?” She rooted around in the basket with her beak and pulled out six shiny nuts.
“Good idea!” said Monkey, and wrapped the nuts in a big leaf.
Toad sat on Monkey’s head and off they went.
The humans were sitting near their tent. They were holding glasses, and were drinking something from a tall bottle.
“Do you think that drink is from Santa?” said Parrot.
“Looks like it.” said Monkey.
“Humans are so funny.” said Toad. “They only have fur on the top of their heads.”
“Yes, they really look strange.” said Monkey. “They make a lot of cute noises too.”
Monkey walked up to the humans, waving his arms. The humans recognised him and waved their arms too. They seemed happy to see him, and took photographs of Toad sitting on his head.
Monkey solemnly gave the package of nuts to the biggest human, who seemed very surprised. The human showed his teeth and made happy noises.
“I think they like it.” said Parrot. “How do you say ‘Merry Christmas’ in human noises, Monkey?”
“I have no idea.” said Monkey. “Don’t worry, I think they understand.”
Monkey, Toad and Parrot went home.
The humans did understand. They wrote some things in their notebook, and many years later, they still talked among themselves about their special animal friends, and the Christmas gift they brought them.
Kids, do you like this story?
This is a story written by my husband!
Because my husband believes that animals also want to share their good things with humans. Do you agree?
Do you also like to share gifts with friends?
“I have some good things to share with you!”
“I have some good things to share with you!”
Kids, in this world, all creatures need to live in peace and be kind to each other. Let’s wish all creatures a Merry Christmas, peace and happiness!

An English Picture Book “Little Snowflake”
Hello, this is Teacher Bear, 我是Bear老師。
Kids, I was chatting with a British friend last week. She told me that it was snowing in London and that winter was really coming.
In Taiwan, although there is no snow in winter, you must want to see it, right?
Hope you can enjoy the beautiful snow scenery one day. Are you curious about how snow is formed?
Let’s follow the little snowflake in this English picture book and have a look!
An English Picture Book “Little Snowflake”/
Suzanne Fossey
Illustrator /插畫家:Gina Maldonado
Translator/翻譯:Bear Weir
I was born inside a cloud, one frosty winter day, as the wind blew over mountaintops, high and far away.
Tiny drops of water froze, all sparkly as can be.
They turned into strands of ice, and the ice turned into… me!
Suddenly the wind whipped up and hurled me to and fro.
I couldn't tell my up from down, or which way I should go.
“Sorry little snowflake.” Wind said with a sigh.
“I'm needed somewhere else tonight. It's time to say goodbye.”
And with that, Wind was off, waving back at me.
I fluttered gently downward and landed on a tree.
The sun was coming up, and the sky was all aglow.
From high up in our tree we gazed at the world below.
A squirrel scampered up the trunk to see the snowy view. His paws made all the branches shake, and down to earth we flew.
Now the sun was shining bright, the start of a new day. Very soon, the children all came running out to play.
Someone scooped us up and squeezed us tight and round.
Whee! We hurtled through the air, then SPLAT! We hit the ground.
Then they started rolling us to make a big, round ball.
They lifted us up high to make a snowman standing tall.
From high up on the snowman's head, I watched the children play.
They laughed and ran and danced and skated all that snowy day.
The afternoon grew warmer. The sun was shining bright.
The snowman slipped and melted, he was quite a funny sight!
Soon we were a puddle, sparkling in the sun.
We turned to mist and floated up.
Our time down here was done.
I drifted back up to the clouds, who gave a happy smile.
“So nice to have you back again! You've been gone a while.”
High above the world we flew. The wind began to blow.
The cold air turned my mist to ice, and ice turned into…snow!
Snowflakes form inside clouds when it's very cold.
Tiny drops of water turn into ice crystals that join together in unique and beautiful patterns.
When the snowflakes grow large and heavy enough, they drift down to the ground as snow.
When the sun shines and the weather gets warmer, the snowflakes melt into drops of
water, then turn into mist that rises up into the clouds again.
Kids, now you know how snowflakes form. Did you start to imagine beautiful snowy scenes?
“How amazing, it's snowing!”
“How amazing, it's snowing!”
In fact, although the snow scene is beautiful, it also brings a lot of trouble to people! I hope you can experience it by yourself one day.
See you next time!
