When the knock at the door came shortly after midnight, Carol & Keith Slater initially tried to ignore the noise, assuming it was just kids messing around or maybe someone at the wrong address.
But as the knocking continued, Carol told Keith he should pop down and see who was at the door in case it was related to their two young children who were staying with Grandparents that night. It might be the police, maybe there had been an accident.
Minutes later, Keith was dead - at just 33 years old - and so many lives changed forever.

It was late - almost midnight - by a quarry near the forest.
The police had arrived as a car had been reported for driving in an erratic manner. The woman was clearly very uncomfortable and didn't want the officers to look inside the two suitcases.
The bodycam is startling as an officer opens one of the bags. There is an audible sharp exhale of breath when what he is looking at hits home. The officer says in both horror and astonishment: "What the f***."

Lauren Jeska was a fell runner.
As a transgender athlete, she had been asked to provide evidence of hormone levels after historical complaints to UK Athletics that she had an unfair advantage competing in women’s events because she had been born a man.
The policy of the governing body required the athlete to take a blood test, but she took exception to this and feared being unable to compete.
Lauren saw this as an attack on her life and decided to take drastic action.

John Warrington was interested in making money and had built up a portfolio of several commercial premises and two houses. But when market conditions took a turn for the worse, he was soon in massive debt and his life was spiralling out of control. He needed urgent results before he lost everything.
John's solution was to write a crime thriller - sure, an unusual choice. When the publishers weren't interested and time was running out before he lost everything, he decided to roll the dice one last time by using the storyline of the novel in his real life...

21 year old Libby Squire, who was studying philosophy at Hull University, had been out with her friends that Thursday evening. They had been drinking around one of their mates houses before heading out. But at the end of the night the bouncers had not let her in the nightclub, The Welly, as they thought she was too tipsy. Nothing unusual here, many of us have been there - so her friends put her in a taxi and paid the fare to ensure she got home safely.
But Libby didn't make it home.
This week we discover the horrible truth of just what happened to Libby.

Susan and Christopher Whybrow - a wealthy barrister - were the fortunate occupants of a beautiful farmhouse in Leavenheath, Suffolk, set within 12 acre gardens. After almost 10 years of marriage, to many people the couple had it all; the idyllic property and a comfortable lifestyle with no money worries. And yet as we know, in all of our lives things are not often quite as we portray to the outside world.
In our story today: flying lessons, an illicit affair, a trial at the Old Bailey - and a lawn mower.

Todays story is from Liverpool where a shooting outside a nightclub left a number of questions unanswered. Serious players in the underworld were loosely connected and did all they could to make the charges related to the shooting go away. Add to this mix an attempt to bribe a Police Officer and a 90's reality star and that is this weeks story on the UK True Crime Podcast.

It was just one of the thousands of missing persons cases that were reported in the UK that year when 63 year old Don Banfield disappeared from his home in north-west London. He had been having issues in his marriage and had talked about moving back to Trinidad - where he was born and the place he loved. But he had spoken to a number of people about being concerned for his safety: had Don come to harm?
Just what happened to Don Banfield?

The episode this week comes from the north-east of England.
Like almost all of us, Nicola Morrin just wanted to enjoy life and when she met her partner he seemed a lovely man. But he wasn't.
He was a weak, violent bully and Nicola was desperate to get away from him as she feared just what he was capable of doing to her.

Alethea Foster was Lead Clinical Specialist Podiatrist at King’s College Hospital NHS Trust between 1985 and 2004, where she was a top class operator in her profession winning numerous awards. But things at home with her retired journalist husband John weren't great: their sex life had stopped 17 years previously and Alethea suspected he might be having an affair with an ex-colleague Julie Simpson.

Cornwall isn't the sort of place you associate with large scale drug imports from South America, IRA terrorists and murder.
But in this episode of the UK True Crime podcast, we hear a story that involved all of these things.
When detectives quizzed local farmer Ross Stone about cannabis being grown on his farm, they could never expected that he would reveal that two missing men -Brett Flournoy (l) & David Griffiths (r) were also buried there.
But was he responsible for the killings?

The conclusion of the story from last week - if you haven't listened to the episode last week, this is strongly advised as this is the continuation of that episode.
At the beginning of this century, when the internet was new for most people - and before the social media giants claimed their turf - chatrooms were very popular, especially with teenagers.
Mark was 16 and lived in Stockport in the north-west of England. He was a regular on the Manchester Teens chatroom. But whilst he was there to have some fun and chat to girls, not everyone he spoke to had such simple motives. As he was soon to discover...

At the police conference, officers appealed for information about the death of 21 year old Richard Holmes. They told how Richard was shot and killed in Greenham Crescent in the Chingford Hall estate as he defended a 16-year-old boy against a group of men. He was found dead in the early hours of the morning.
Three witnesses came forward with information, and all pointed to a rising star in the UK grime music scene being responsible - Carl Dobson, better know as Crazy Titch....

"The things I have done weigh heavily on my heart, on my head and my soul. A psychopath with a conscience - it's a joke really."Alexandra Morgan told her parents she was going on a spa break with a friend, but when she didn't pick up her children and dog when she should have done a few days later, her mum reported her disappearance to the police.
Police enquiries pointed to a local groundworker Mark Brown and a yard he rented near Hastings: a yard with buildings and a shipping container at Little Bridge Farm. But as detectives searched for Alexandra, they found medication relating to another missing woman, Leah Ware.
Was Mark Brown responsible for both disappearances?

Keep Meen OUT of Womens Sports. Sorry, Adam, just can't support this one.
Brilliant podcast and so detailed.
I used to live in Greenock. I'm still not far from there. I remember this very well. There should have been harsher charges and harsher sentences. Whether she died in prison or not, it does not account for the damage and despair she caused the poor families and friends involved. I can tell you though that the policing is awful here. They're a gang of their own and take advantage of vulnerable families. Thanks for this upload..
What's with the sound levels? Terrible production
There's just one word for it, Adam - Karma! Don't mess with a married man, and for 17 fricking years, no less!
I have no sympathy, and am not struggling to find it, for this guy.
turn up recording volume, cannot hear what your talking about
I dont know who did it but im sre it wasnt greenwood.
such a lenient sentence. if released in sixteen years he will be a very dangerous thirty year old.
It shouldn’t make a difference what he was doing on his phone. But somehow it does.
I love your podcasts but this was such a heartbreaking case. I couldn't finish listening.. brought back too many memories . I was a kid in the 60's living near the Moors ..it could have happened to any of us children. This drastically changed our lives for ever. 💔
I was so saddened by this. what a beautiful amazing young woman to overcome such adversity and still spread so much love in the world then to have her life taken in such a violent way. My heartfelt condolences to her family.
they always find ingenious ways and means to release these dangerous monsters don't they. they come up with these far out justifications to release these guys and gaslight the public that it is I. the interest of justice.
👍👍
At the time I was vulnerable because my nan was in hospital! Oh please! Any excuse! Hahaha
Really poor sound quality. Sounds like the narrator is in a tunnel. Shame because the content looks interesting but I’m afraid the sound quality is grating so had to give up after 5 mins!
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Love the new podcast logo!! Brilliant podcast to go with it, Paul!! Thank you for all of your great narration! Your team is superior! I have binged them all and I am starting all over listening to them again! I appreciate the great episodes! Please keep them coming!!
What a bastard.
Adam, you sound so far away from the microphone...
not a great voice for radio
