The damage was really done in the first period as goals from Emiliano Buendia and Morgan Rogers, the latter in first-half stoppage time, gave the visitors a commanding lead. Wilson Odobert fired home to reduce the deficit while Villa goalkeeper Marco Bizot made a couple of smart saves to keep his side ahead. In the end though, we couldn’t find that elusive equaliser and exited the tournament at the first hurdle. It was our first home defeat in the FA Cup third round since 1992, when we lost 1-0, also to Aston Villa. The Dutch international produced arguably his best performance in our colours following his August arrival, setting up Richarlison for the opener before scoring his first goal as a Spurs player with a wonderful solo effort, leaving us in control at half-time. We probably should have won by more as Thomas Frank came up against his former side for the first time, creating a whole host of chances which we didn’t take, while Guglielmo Vicario was only called into action once to keep out Igor Thiago in the first period. It was a first league victory and clean sheet since the 3-0 win at Everton on 26 October and a first home victory in the division since the opening day against Burnley but it was a performance to leave us with plenty of optimism going into the busy festive period and beyond. Back in the side after serving a one-game suspension on Saturday, the skipper twice cancelled out Newcastle goals as the game exploded into life in the final 20 minutes. The Magpies’ own captain, Bruno Guimaraes, came off the bench to open the scoring with a fine strike before Romero’s diving header drew us level. Then, after a controversial penalty was converted by Anthony Gordon with four minutes left, our Argentine international scored a spectacular equaliser five minutes into injury time to salvage a 2-2 draw.
