Patrick Leddin reveals the negotiation mindset that helped him close a 50/50 book deal with James Patterson — and the one relationship trap that nearly cost him everything. Patrick Leddin is a professor at Vanderbilt University, former U.S. Army Ranger, and co-author of the New York Times bestselling book Disrupt Everything — co-written with James Patterson. He has taught negotiation and leadership for over a decade, and his work has been brought to life as a Franklin Covey course: Disrupt Everything: Innovate for Impact. In this episode, Patrick unpacks the surprising link between disruption and negotiation — and why the habits of a positive disruptor make you a sharper negotiator. Most people think negotiation is about winning — but what if that mindset is exactly why they keep losing? In this masterclass episode, you’ll hear three expert perspectives that completely reframe how negotiation actually works — from high-level strategy to real-world legal battles to the future of human communication. The common thread? The best negotiators aren’t the most aggressive — they’re the most curious, self-aware, and trust-driven. You’ll discover why asking questions is more powerful than making arguments, how trust directly impacts profitability, and why most professionals are unknowingly leaving value on the table. From uncovering hidden variables in complex deals to navigating emotional clients and high-stakes disputes, this episode breaks down what separates average negotiators from elite performers. You’ll also learn: Why curiosity — not confidence — is the real negotiation superpower How trust reduces friction, cost, and conflict in any deal The hidden role of emotion and irrational behavior in decision-making How to build relationships that turn into long-term leverage Why most organizations fail without a clear negotiation strategy How to balance collaboration vs. competition in real-world scenarios The overlooked communication skills that will define success in the future Whether you're closing deals, managing conflict, or simply trying to communicate more effectively, this episode gives you a practical blueprint to negotiate smarter — not harder. Because negotiation isn’t about dominating the other side — it’s about understanding them better than anyone else.
In this enlightening episode of "Negotiate Anything," host Kwame Christian sits down with expert Jack Schafer to explore the intricate dynamics of deception and how it fits into the broader context of negotiation and human interaction. Schafer, with his extensive background in law enforcement and behavioral analysis, shares insights into understanding deception not merely as a negative influence, but as a complex element of communication. The discussion covers the art of deception detection and techniques to manage conversations where dishonesty is present, emphasizing empathetic and respectful approaches that maintain relationships. Listeners are equipped with innovative techniques that integrate strategic questioning, observation of non-verbal cues, and ways to make people feel respected and valued, which can transform the negotiation landscape. What will be covered: Techniques to detect deception through behavioral and verbal cues. The use of elicitation in negotiations to gain truthful information without direct confrontation. Strategies to handle deception while preserving relationships in negotiations. Connect with John R. Why do smart, successful people feel trapped in constant busyness? In this episode, Dorie Clark — author of The Long Game — joins Kwame Christian to reveal why thinking long-term feels almost impossible in a world that rewards urgency. What if the reason you’re being overlooked isn’t your performance — but your relationships? In this masterclass episode, we unpack the uncomfortable truth most high achievers avoid: doing great work isn’t enough. We go beyond surface-level tactics and dive into: The hidden reason top performers get passed over — and how to change it How to build authentic, strategic relationships without feeling transactional Why asking for help is actually a powerful act of leadership The concept of “co-elevation” and how to create a network that actively lifts you The leadership habits that multiply your influence — both in conversations and in life Whether you’re a heads-down operator ready to step into leadership, or a seasoned professional looking to deepen your impact, this episode gives you a clear, practical roadmap to stop being overlooked — and start being remembered. What if the real reason you freeze in high-stakes moments isn’t a lack of confidence — but a nervous system trying to protect you? In this powerful conversation, somatic coach and author Jay Moon Fields reveals why so many high-performing professionals sabotage themselves in the moments that matter most — and how to reclaim control using the intelligence of the body. Drawing from over 20 years of work with Fortune 100 leaders and organizations like Apple, the United Nations, and Patagonia, Jay shares the surprising truth behind people-pleasing, emotional shutdown, and overthinking. You’ll learn why your body often knows what’s happening before your mind does — and how learning to listen to those signals can transform the way you lead, communicate, and negotiate. Together, we explore Jay’s powerful “Hey, Wait” framework, a simple yet profound method for pausing in the middle of stressful interactions, reconnecting with your internal experience, and showing up with clarity instead of fear. In this episode, you’ll discover: Why high achievers often freeze, overthink, or people-please in critical moments The body signals that reveal when you’re abandoning yourself in conversations How to interrupt emotional hijacking before it takes over A practical 3-step method to stay grounded during difficult feedback, negotiations, and conflict Why learning to say “Hey, wait” can radically change how you relate to others — and yourself If you’ve ever walked away from a meeting thinking “Why didn’t I say what I meant to say?”, this episode will give you the tools to stop freezing, trust your instincts, and show up with presence when the stakes are highest. Because the most powerful conversations don’t start with better scripts — they start with better awareness of yourself.
Failure isn’t a setback — it’s the fastest path to growth, clarity, and real success. In this masterclass episode of Negotiate Anything, we dive deep into the idea that the most important breakthroughs don’t come from getting it right — they come from getting it wrong and choosing to move forward anyway. Entrepreneur Jeremy Delk shares his journey from small-town beginnings to Wall Street, revealing how losing big, taking risks, and embracing uncertainty shaped his success. Alongside him, learning scientist Manu Kapoor introduces the concept of “productive failure,” explaining why intentionally stepping into discomfort is the key to mastering any skill — from negotiation to leadership. Together, they unpack why the hardest conversations are often the ones we have with ourselves, how authenticity accelerates better outcomes, and why action — not overthinking — is the real catalyst for progress. This episode will challenge the way you see failure, push you to rethink your approach to growth, and give you practical insights you can apply immediately. Because the goal isn’t to avoid failure. It’s to use it — on purpose.
In a world of mass layoffs and AI automation, your reputation is no longer enough to save your job. In this episode, brand and behavior strategist Howie Chan explains why "personal branding" is a trap that turns most professionals off—and why you should focus on becoming a Professional with Influence instead. Howie spent 20 years in corporate leadership before being laid off, an experience that led him to develop the Behavioring Blueprint: a framework for making yourself indispensable. If you’re tired of "dancing on TikTok" advice and want a science-backed way to win in the new economy, this masterclass is for you. What if everything you’ve been taught about networking is missing the point? In this episode, we sit down with relationship strategy expert Andy Lopata to uncover why real professional success isn’t built in networking events — it’s built in intentional relationships. You’ll learn: Why “networking” is only a tiny part of building meaningful professional relationships The 7 stages of professional relationships — from recognition to advocacy How the Relationship Matrix helps you move from passive connections to intentional influence The real reasons people choose to help their colleagues — and how to ethically leverage that dynamic Practical ways to influence without authority in siloed organizations Along the way, Andy and Kwame unpack the psychology of influence, the blurred line between personal and professional relationships, and why authentic curiosity — not manipulation — is the real key to building a powerful network. If you want stronger alliances, greater influence at work, and a relationship strategy that actually works, this conversation will change the way you think about connection. Tune in and discover how to turn everyday interactions into lasting professional relationships that open doors for years to come.

I'll be going to my first job interview in ages and I was really worried about the "what do you want to earn" question since, as you said, being way below or above your interview partner's estimation creates problems. The solution you mentioned is exactly what I was looking for 😊 Thank you!

This is NOT about having difficult conversations about race. This would assume everyone agrees with the premise, comes to the table willing to listen to one another, being open to learning something, changing one's mind, or coming to a compromise. This podcast assumes "systemic, institutional racism," refers to "the other side" and instructs on recruiting allies to "the cause." The a'priori assumption needs to be agreed upon by all before a conversation can be had.

How do you manage freezing? someone is very angry and says "this is absolutely ridiculous, you don't go home to your wife and children tonight until this problem is fixed". it's complex but you can't work on it because you are Frozen by fear. takes you a day to get over it and start being productive and another two days to find the problem was not yours and was in fact not a problem at all because it was incorrectly defined!
