On board today is Michael Quan, author of the book The Fire Planner, and the man behind the popular Financially Alert blog and the Breakthrough Millionaire Podcast. Michael reached FIRE in his early thirties and It was actually only after he sold his IT company to a larger provider and inadvertently found himself back in a nine-to-five corporate job that he decided he was going to pull the pin and FIRE at age 36, which is pretty impressive. Post FIRE, these days, Michael is a stay-at-home dad in sunny San Diego. He loves raising his kids, spending time with his wife, and in his downtime, writing, podcasting, and financially coaching his students and readers. Michael's latest project has been setting up and running a real estate investor mastermind group, which he does a couple of times a month. I really enjoyed my chat with Michael and he had heaps of awesome suggestions for learning resources and inspiration too!
Liz - Meet The Frugalwoods

Liz - Meet The Frugalwoods

2023-12-3101:19:24

Today, I have the absolute pleasure to be chatting to Liz from her awesome blog and amazing book that she wrote, Meet the Frugal Woods! Anyone who's been on the Captain FI blog knows that I'm a big fan of Liz and Nate, the Frugal Woods and they are literally living my dream! They have an acreage in rural Vermont, which they call the Frugalwoods. There, they're raising their two beautiful daughters and they participate in a whole bunch of wholesome things. They're always gardening, the kids are always in the garden, and it really just looks like an awesome lifestyle. Liz and her husband started working towards FI in 2014, both 29 at the time. They had white collar office positions and thought they were dream jobs but they realised they didn't actually feel fulfilled. They were forced to re evaluate and started to talk about other ways that they could live their lives. Something that they really wanted to do was live in nature. They were in Boston and did not feel energised, they wanted to be in the woods. So they bought a property in rural Vermont in 2016 and have never looked back. Liz has since enjoyed freelance writing, working one on one with clients doing financial consultations, writing for the Frugalwoods blog and she published the book, Meet the Frugalwoods which has been extremely popular! This was a bit of a selfish interview as I wanted as much info as possible on Liz's homestead life so I can make this a reality for myself!
On board today is Phil Muscatello, the host and producer of the awesome podcasts, Shares for Beginners, Stocks for Beginners, ETFs for Beginners and Talking Companies. Phil is not from a finance background, but he wants to learn more about becoming a better investor. So he hopes that his listeners come along for the ride and don't make the same mistakes that he has. Phil actually has degrees in Media Production and Literary Studies. He played in some awesome, psychedelic, heavy rock cabaret bands in Sydney during the 80s, before moving into a more stable career in radio, working at the ABC, and Triple J. Phil describes himself as a seventies punk boomer, he loves playing guitar, ocean swimming, cycling, going to the gym, and anything to do with technology. He grew up in Sydney, has always been interested in music, playing guitar, loves literature, arts and is an avid reader. He went to UTS in Sydney and became a little bit of a political radical. After leaving university with a media degree, there was a recession and a lot of depair, as well as very limited jobs in media, so he ended up driving taxis for a few years before starting a career in radio, moving into commercial radio and then started his own recording studio. He recorded one of the first podcasts in Australia, setting up his own server and fast forward to today, is still loving the podcasting! Phil was incredibly interesting and had a thing or two to teach me too!
On board today is Kristy Shen and Bryce Leung from Canada, also known from their popular blog, Millennial Revolution. Here's a quote from our guests, 'Money is the most important thing in the world'. Maybe a bit of a controversial take. Whilst having money is certainly no guarantee of happiness, poverty is sure to make you miserable, and no one knows this better than Kristy, who has seen both ends of the wealth spectrum. Despite growing up in poverty and, at one point, living with her family on 44 cents a day, Kristy Shen, along with her husband Bryce Leung, went on to become self made millionaires at the ripe old age of 31 and 32, going on to retire only a few years later. Now, 40 and 41 Kristy and Bryce have spent the past decade traveling, exploring new cultures, spending time with family and friends, helping others succeed with their financial goals, and expressing their creativity as authors and publishers, both in personal finance, but also, interestingly, with children's books. How did they do it? Well, as students, analyzing potential career paths, they weighed up training costs, effort, and future salaries to work out their optimum return on investment, and the pair both very mindfully chose to work in the developing field of software engineering. Kristy's heritage taught her to avoid debt at all costs, and the importance of a high savings rate. Kristy and Bryce took it to the next level, saving and investing on average 80 percent of their large software engineer incomes over their nine-year working careers. In 2015, they pulled the plug. They retired from their engineering jobs to FIRE and travel the world together. They blog at Millennial Revolution, and have published the book, Quit like a Millionaire, which I found particularly helpful and inspiring on my journey to FIRE. They believe that money is the most important tool we have to improve our quality of life. Kristy and Bryce swear by the numbers which led them to financial freedom and enabled them to pursue their passions for travel, writing, and helping others. Jump on board, this one's a long one but Kristy and Bryce were just so inspiring to chat to!
On board today is Louise Howard, a Sydney-based executive who I met through the FIRE community. Louise is an incredibly talented, dedicated and successful person who has held executive roles in infrastructure projects in the public sector, as well as management and consulting in the private sector. She recently decided to take a break from her government job and launched her own advisory business called Louise Howard Advisory, where she advises and speaks publicly, all over the world on topics such as infrastructure, development, career mentoring and leadership. Louise is from a big Italian family and learned some solid financial lessons from her parents who provided a wonderful start for her and her siblings. Louise lives in a high cost of living area in Sydney, but is a mean negotiator when it comes to her salary, and is passionate about pay equality for women in the workforce. Louise is 5 years from her FAT Fire goal, has made some very smart money and investing decisions along the way and it was awesome to catch up with her again!
On board today is Dev Raga, a practicing clinician from Melbourne with a passion for personal finance. Dev is a fellow podcaster and currently hosts the My Millennial Money Professional Podcast, which is a podcast that makes money concepts simple for busy professionals. Dev began podcasting because he wanted to leave a blueprint for his children and family in the rare event that he wasn't around to explain the basics of personal finance and investing. He's a husband, father, doctor, podcaster and he's a first generation immigrant. His parents migrated here in the early nineties from India and Dev grew up in Adelaide actually, went to medical school and then moved to Melbourne. Dev is a millennial and learned from his parents at a very early age, that while money was not the most important thing, that it is very important. Dev wants to keep working in the medical field, even after reaching FI and continues to enjoy interviewing many interesting professionals through his podcast. Dev has some very useful viewpoints to share with us, so strap in, this one will get you thinking!
On board today is Michelle from Making Sense of Cents. Michelle reached financial independence through her online businesses and has enjoyed living a variety of interesting lifestyles post FI, including, but not limited to van life. Now, Michelle and her family even live part-time on a sailboat, and get to travel the world via the seven seas, which is pretty bloody cool. Michelle used to work as a financial analyst and documented her journey towards FI through her blog, Making Sense of Cents, which she started in 2011, so her first series of blogs was about paying off nearly $40k worth of student loans in just half a year, which is a pretty mind-boggling accomplishment in itself. Michelle went on to write tips and insights about personal finance, budgeting, and how she was able to make more money which helped her to pay down these debts so quickly, and then she was able to turn this cash firehose into building her wealth. Her blog became incredibly popular, and fast forward to today, Michelle's website has reached over 20 million readers, regularly goes out to over 300, 000 subscribers and has earned her a tidy USD $5 million in revenue! Michelle has actually meticulously documented this income showing the various income streams through areas such as advertising, sponsored posts, affiliate marketing and selling her own digital products and courses. It's pretty awesome. And it's a transparency that you don't often see online. Jump on board, I learned a lot from Michelle!
The Fioneers - Jess & Corey

The Fioneers - Jess & Corey

2023-10-1501:21:11

On board today are Jess and Corey, better known online as The Fioneers. Jess and Corey both spent the majority of their careers working in mission driven non-profit organizations. But in 2018, Jess experienced really bad burnout, which led to some anxiety and really needing to take a step back. So Jess had a six month career break to really focus on her mental health, returning the following year to part-time work. This gave her time to rest, reset, focus, and plan. When researching and planning out her future career and finances, she discovered that they'd actually already reached coast FI, so decided to only continue working part-time and enjoy creative and relaxing hobbies on her time off, such as blogging. In 2020, Jess launched her own business, Design A Life You'd Love, which went really well, and only a year later, she was able to leave her job to work full time on the business. Now, after purchasing and building out a camper van last year, Jess and Corey now travel the USA, living a location independent lifestyle. It was a really interesting, 3 way chat today, learning about their attitudes towards FIRE and about designing a life you don't need to retire from.
On board today is Dr. Jordan Grumet, better known as Doc G from the DiverseFI blog and the host of the incredibly popular Earn and Invest podcast, but he's also the author of the blog, In My Humble Opinion. Doc G specializes in palliative care and despite reaching FI continues to work in the hospice part-time where he compassionately helps people through the final stages of their lives. Unlike most doctors I know, Doc G is pretty amazing when it comes to money. He sees it as a tool that we can use to improve our lives and live a more fulfilling life. He even says that becoming a money expert became his second career, and it was incredibly fulfilling to him to help put the veil back around money and help people find their true identity, purpose, and passions in life. In addition to his award-winning blog and podcast, he has written and published two books with his latest book being titled, 'Taking Stock, a Hospice Doctor's Advice on Financial Independence, building Wealth, and Living a Regret Free Life.' Doc G has observed that as a community, though we're pretty obsessed with investing, we're probably not interested enough in our own unique purpose, identities and connections. Although he has helped thousands of people transition from life to death, he says, we don't actually have to wait for a death sentence before we start searching for meaning and ask the important questions. He wants to remove the hurdle of good money management so that we can all learn to live well today. Doc G was incredibly inspiring and forced me to think differently about FI! Jump in!
On board the podcast I welcome Queenie Tan, a Sydney-based personal finance content creator who you might recognise from her incredibly popular channel and profile, Invest with Queenie, where she has amassed nearly 400,000 followers across social media channels such as Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and Facebook. Queenie had a modest upbringing and was raised by her single dad, leaving home at 19 years old. Queenie was able to go from earning minimum wage to quickly earning 6 figures and in a few short years was able to save over $100,000 for her first home deposit. Fast forward to today, Queenie has amassed a net wealth of over $500,000 and is well on her way to financial independence, building a thriving influencer marketing company, all by the age of 26. It's awesome to see that Queenie has been able to help so many people with her engaging content and I loved catching up with her once again! Jump on board!
On the pod today I interviewed Nicole Martin, owner of Martin & Fortuin, teaching Financial Literacy Australia. Nicole began her career as an accountant in Cape Town, South Africa. After 4 years of training, she made the move into finance, working firstly for a Listed Investment Company, and then as the assistant accountant to the financial director in a manufacturing business. When Nicole and her family moved to Australia, they settled in Coffs Harbour and she worked as a financial accountant for a company in the seafood industry. On the pod today from Austin, Texas is Corwin, a fellow aerospace engineer and FIRE blogger from 'Engineering your FI' with a Bachelor's, Masters and PhD in aerospace engineering, as well as over a decade of engineering industry experience. He definitely fits the engineering bill, which we often see here in the FIRE community. Corwin and his partner reached financial independence at ages 35 and 33 respectively, which he puts down to a lot of hard work and some good fortune. Corwin has worked for NASA, and also gained a position at the University of Texas as a researcher, where he still works to this day. He calls personal finance a hobby, he's clearly a very intelligent bloke and with his engineering background, we had a lot in common! He worked bloody hard to command a high income and has sensibly invested a large portion of it over time, allowing him to reach financial independence at such a young age, and it was awesome to hear about his experience and his journey! Listen on..
On board the podcast today is Mr Nomad Numbers. Mr and Mrs Nomad Numbers sold everything they owned and began slow travelling the world. They've documented their travels and their journey on NomadNumbers.com where they blog anonymously and share their travel destinations, itineraries and meticulously document their costs of travel and living. They came to the conclusion that the cost of slow traveling the world can actually be much cheaper than staying at home and working. They have been able to spend almost 50% less than when they were living in high cost areas such as San Francisco, by taking advantage of geo arbritrage. Mr and Mrs Nomad Numbers love writing about personal finance, minimalism and their journey to financial independence and are really on a mission to inspire others to look outside of their comfort zone to live a life true to themselves. Jump on board, I found this chat fascinating!
Dom - Gen Y Finance Guy

Dom - Gen Y Finance Guy

2023-08-2701:22:22

On board the pod today is Dom who runs the popular blog Gen Y Finance Guy, where Dom's been blogging about his journey to financial independence and posting net wealth updates for the past decade. Dom is from California, where he lives with his wife and 2 kids. He faced some immense challenges early on in life, growing up below the poverty line, and eventually having to be raised by his grandparents after his parents ended up in jail. Dom refers to this as humble financial beginnings. Dom's grandfather was a business owner and had a huge influence on Dom's finances and outlook on life. As a result, Dom had a pretty Big Hairy Audacious Goal to reach a net worth of $10 million by age 40. Dom managed to climb the corporate ladder, where he was a CFO for a large company, all while side hustling to build his business and his side income. His side hustle became his full time software business, and he was able to build his business to exceed his corporate income, eventually selling the business for over $20 million. His share allowed him to reach a fat FIRE goal with a net wealth of over $10 million, so he now enjoys financial freedom, blogging on Gen Y Finance Guy and managing his family's capital part time. He's a very ambitious guy, loves numbers and math, will be starting his own podcast soon, and our chat was VERY eye opening! Jump on board!
On board today we welcome Jonathan Clements, the founder and editor of The Humble Dollar blog. He then joined Citigroup in the wealth management division as its director of financial education, where he earned the big bucks, but was also completely miserable. He called quits in 2014 and has been semi retired ever since, working on projects that he really wanted to, such as writing books and launching The Humble Dollar. Jump in, Jonathan was really interesting to chat to!

Barney, The Escape Artist

2023-07-3001:11:11

Today on the pod, all the way from London, I welcome Barney Whiter, The Escape Artist, to discuss his journey to financial independence and escaping the cubicle. Barney is not just your average blogger, he has a degree in economics and has worked for over 2 decades as a qualified charter accountant in corporate finance. He was able to retire at the age of 43, about a decade ago, never having won the lottery or inheriting a fortune, but all while paying off the family mortgage and raising 3 young kids. How did he do it? Barney talks about the four key pillars of financial independence - earn more, spend less, wisely invest the difference and know how much is enough. Barney says that anyone who follows these four pillars, can reach financial independence. He talks a bit about his coaching program and more about his great escape! Jump on board!
On board the pod today is JMoney from Budgets are Sexy. JMoney is probably one of the most recognizable names, or should that be Mohawks in the fire community. After a somewhat impulsive purchase of a home in his early twenties, J became focused on improving his finances and became inspired by what he read online, causing him to start what eventually came to be the incredibly popular blog, Budgets are Sexy. J became a millionaire in just 10 short years reaching financial independence before the age of 40 and reaching over 30 million readers along the way. As a result, Jay has won many awards, including 12 Industry Plutus awards, including 2012 Financial Blogger of the Year and the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award. Jay is also no stranger to online businesses having built, acquired, worked on, or sold dozens of websites over the past 15 years. Projects J has worked on include his namesake blog Budgets are Sexy, as well as other popular sites such as Rockstar Finance and CoinThrill. JMoney acts as an advisor to the Plutus Foundation, consults for several fintechs, mentors and coaches other bloggers, and, even brokers, and coordinates online business sellouts. I suppose J and I share a few things in common. We both have ADHD, a passion for money and enjoy dabbling in some online businesses in semi-retirement. So jump on board, JMoney is full of energy and we had such a fun chat!
