Allain Roy joins Scott Burnside and Mike McKenna on the finale of The Suitcase and The Scribe live from the Kelowna airport. Roy is wrapping up his agency camps in the beautiful Okanogan town after starting in New Brunswick earlier in the summer. Roy first spoke about the market this season and its uniqueness. He then discussed the most recent deal with Jonas Siegenthaler in New Jersey. Siegenthaler isn't the only player Roy works with on the Devils. He spoke about his other client Nico Hischier and how his new deal in New Jersey came about. After the interview, Mike and Scott dove into what's been happening around the NHL and what hasn't been happening. The New York Islanders have done nothing so far this summer. Mike gives a prediction on what could still happen on Long Island. On the flip side, they spoke about the sneaky good summer the Pittsburgh Penguins have had. Not only did they bring back Kris Letang and Geno Malkin, but they found a way to move Michael Matheson's contract and Jon Marino to bring in Jeff Petry and Ty Smith. Scott and Mike discussed the situation with Hockey Canada to close the show. Scott has some great work over on DailyFaceoff.com about everything happening.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Mike McKenna and Scott Burnside are back for another episode of The Suitcase and The Scribe. Today's show is centred around free agency, which we are now one week into, and also the situation in Calgary. After losing Johnny Gaudreau last week to the Columbus Blue Jackets, which caused quite the stir, the Flames are now on the brink of losing Matthew Tkachuk. Tkachuk is a restricted free agent, but all reports indicated that his days might be numbers in the Flames. What does this mean for Calgary? Mike and Scott discuss the situation on today's show. Additionally, they spoke about why American-born players do not want to stay in Canada. Mike talked about his experiences in the Canadian market, and Scott relayed some information he learned from talking with hockey personnel. We are now deep into free agency, and most top players are spoken for. However, two names that are still lingering around are Nazem Kadri and John Klingberg do not have homes. Mike and Scott discussed possible landing spots for those two and why they haven't signed anywhere. Also, on the show, Mike and Scott talked about the San Jose Sharks, the Seattle Kraken, and another current free agent in Nino Niederreiter. The madness of free agency is less than 24 hours away in the NHL. Mike McKenna and Scott Burnside are here to give you a rundown of who's available and where they could land. However, before the free agency talk began, Mike told a great story about his experience at a New Jersey Devils camp when Lou Lamoriello was in charge. It's a story you won't want to miss. After that, the two dove into the free agency chatter, starting at the top of the board with Johnny Gaudreau. Every passing day makes it seem like he won't be signing there. If that's the case, then where will Johnny Hockey land? Could it be Philadelphia? Could New Jersey still be in the mix? Mike and Scott give their takes on today's show.John Klingberg is another intriguing name on the market, along with David Perron and Nazem Kadri. Then, it would not that an episode of The Suitcase and The Scribe if Mike and Scott did not talk about goaltenders. Darcy Kuemper and Jack Campbell look like they have found homes in Washington and Edmonton. Ilya Samsonov is a new name joining the market after the Capitals released him. Mike gave his two cents on why that happened. You can hear all of that and much more on the newest episode of The Suitcase and The Scribe. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
The play on the ice may be all wrapped up, but the chaos off the ice is just beginning. Scott Burnside returned to the show this week as he and Mike McKenna welcomed Chris Johnston from TSN. Chris is in Montreal for the NHL Entry Draft, which gets going on Thursday night. He talked about the vibes around the draft being in person for the first time in a few years; however, while it may be in person now in a couple of years, that may be changing. He also spoke about the big trade over the weekend, which saw Ryan McDonagh move to Nashville from Tampa Bay. Along with that, he briefly dove into the free agency talk. After Mike and Scott's conversation with Chris, the two of them dove into the other news around the NHL, and there was a lot of it. Many new head coaches are hired, with announcements coming in Detroit, Boston and Winnipeg. On top of that, San Jose brought in the first black general manager in NHL history. Then finally, of course, free agency starts next week, so they had to talk about that too.You can hear all that and more in episode 42 of The Suitcase and The Scribe.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
No Scott Burnside on the show today, so Mike McKenna was joined by a fellow suitcase Derek Nesbitt.Nesbitt is the current captain of the Atlanta Gladiators in the ECHL and has played over 1000 games in the minor leagues. During his time in the minor leagues, he was coached by now Colorado Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar. Nesbitt told a couple of stories from his time spent with Bednar and also talked about his relationships with his players.Of course, earlier this week, the Bednar won the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche beating the Tampa Bay Lightning in game six. Mike and Derek dove into the series, discussing what the Avalanche did to help them win. In the days after the final game, Jon Cooper released the Lightning's injury report, and if you haven't seen it already, you will want to listen to what a few players were dealing with. Also, on the show, Mike and Derek discussed the Chicago Blackhawks' new head coach Luke Richardson along with the other new coaches around the NHL. That list includes John Tortorella, who is back in the NHL with the Philadelphia Flyers. You can hear all that and more on episode 41 of The Suitcase and The Scribe.  Hosted on Acast. The Suitcase and The Scribe are back for another Stanley Cup Final edition of the show as the Colorado Avalanche head into game four tonight with a 2-1 lead over the Tampa Bay Lightning. There's no better person to join the guys on the show today than somebody who sees the final take place down at ice level.Emily Kaplan from ESPN dropped by to chat with Scott Burnside about what has happened not only in the Stanley Cup Final but also throughout the playoffs. She discussed how she became an on-camera person at ESPN, her relationship with coaches around the NHL, and also her parting words to players in interviews. Before the interview, Mike McKenna and Scott Burnside broke down last night's NHL Awards. There were not many surprises, but some hockey fans were unhappy about Auston Matthews winning the Hart Trophy over Connor McDavid. Mike and Scott justified the award by explaining why Matthews was a deserving recipient. They also discussed the Vezina Trophy, Norris Trophy and the Ted Lindsay. They dove into game four of the Stanley Cup Final and answered the lingering question over the Avalanches camp right now: should Darcy Kuemper start game four? Finally, they talked about the coaching changes around the league, and Mike gave an update on the AHL's Calder Cup Final. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Ladies and gentlemen, we have finally arrived at the main event. The Stanley Cup Final gets going tonight in Colorado with the Avalanche taking on the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Lightning is becoming very familiar with playing hockey this late into the year. Meanwhile, Colorado is back in the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 2001, when they beat the New Jersey Devils in seven games. People are calling this series the best finals matchup we have seen in a long time, and rightfully so. Two of the stars in this series are between the pipes. Of course, Tampa Bay has one of the best goaltenders of all time in Andrei Vasilevskiy, and, on the other side of the ice, Darcy Kuemper will likely be the Avs guy as he is expected to return from injury. Mike McKenna broke down the goalie duel on today's show and how it might be more of an advantage for one goaltender than the other. Scott Burnside also gave his thoughts on the series. Specifically on the five-on-five play from both teams. Another question looming over this series is the health of Brayden Point. How does his return impact the series? What if he doesn't play at all? Mike and Scott discussed those thoughts on today's show. In other hockey news, we had some coaching news with Bruce Cassidy joining the Vegas Golden Knights and John Torteralla likely signing on with the Philadelphia Flyers. Plenty of discussion on those two decisions. They also talked about the other openings around the NHL. The show then ends with a talk about the NHL's goaltending market. A bunch of names of come up in rumours over the last week, including John Gibson (Anaheim Ducks) and Matt Murray (Ottawa Senators). Where do they fit, and should teams even want them? You can hear all that and more in episode 39 of The Suitcase and The Scribe. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Welcome to episode 38 of The Suitcase and The Scribe with Mike McKenna and Scott Burnside.  The Western Conference finalists are set after the Colorado Avalanche took care of business against the Edmonton Oilers. The injuries became a little too much for the Oilers to handle, with two of their stars, Darnell Nurse and Leon Draisaitl, caring significant damage.  Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Lightning have clawed their way back into their series against the New York Rangers in the east and are now tied up at two. The bottom six has shown up in the last couple of games for the Bolts, proving that depth matters again.  Also, on the show, Chris Wideman from the Montreal Canadiens joined Mike and Scott to talk about his new two year extension. They also dove into his time in Russia, having Marty St Louis as the head coach and how he once interned on Wall Street. The interview also contains a brief cameo from Wideman's dog.  Mike and Scott dove into the coaching news to close out the episode. Of course, this week's big news was the firing of Boston Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy. Cassidy had a winning record in every season in Boston and guided them to the Stanley Cup finals in 2019 when they lost in game seven to the St Louis Blues. The question now lingers, what is going to happen next in Beantown?  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
There was more controversy in the NHL playoffs last night. Edmonton Oilers fans were left stunned that Cale Makar's goal counted after what looked like a for sure offside. After that occurrence, there was no better guest to have on The Suitcase and The Scribe today than former NHL referee Dave Jackson. Jackson broke down the play by play of why that goal stood, and the officials made a great call on the ice.  That wasn't the first talked about decision made during an Oilers game throughout this postseason. In game five of the second round, Blake Coleman thought he had given the Calgary Flames a late lead by that goal was disallowed due to a kicking motion. Jackson also talked about that play and shared his initial thoughts.  Mike McKenna and Scott Burnside also spoke with Jackson about his transition to a media role, the life of an official, and the personalities of the people in stripes.  Mike and Scott dove into last night's wild Western Conference Finals following their chat with Jackson. The game came as advertised, with 14 goals scored within the 60 minutes. A big question now heading into game two is the health of Darcy Kuemper. Mike talked about why Avalanche should not be overly concerned.  The Eastern Conference Finals get underway with the Tampa Bay Lightning travelling to the Big Apple to face the New York Rangers. Mike and Scott talked about what they expect to see from the last two teams in the east.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
The Suitcase and The Scribe are back for another episode filled with playoff hockey talk.  After sweeping the Florida Panthers, the Tampa Bay Lightning are moving onto the second round. Mike McKenna and Scott Burnside dove into what went right for Tampa, especially on the depth pieces they have acquired.  Of course, they then spoke about the Carolina Hurricanes and the New York Rangers. Neither team has won a game away from their home arena, so who knows what will happen there. Later on, in the show, Mike and Scott were joined by Leah Hextall from ESPN to talk about the Battle of Alberta. Leah talked about her experience covering the series so far and the vibes around the two cities. She also dove into the banter between the two benches, specifically involving Evander Kane and Matthew Tkachuk.  Towards the end of the interview, the three of them also discussed the idea of Barry Trotz becoming the new head coach of the Winnipeg Jets. Leah is a Manitoba native, and she explained how badly the Jets need a man like Trotz to help turn the tables in Winnipeg.  After talking with Leah Hextall, Mike and Scott rounded out the show with a conversation about the Nazem Kadri racial incident that occurred earlier this week and the other news on the ice from that series.  Hosted on Acast. Today's episode of The Suitcase and The Scribe is a special one. Not one but two guests join Mike McKenna and Scott Burnside to make sure you are all set up for the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.  Up first was former NHLer and now TV analyst Colby Armstrong. Armstrong spoke about one of his former teams first, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the future of that franchise. Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang are both free agents this summer, and the organizations need to decide if they want to move on or not. He also discussed the Toronto Maple Leafs fall in the first round and his belief in the Tampa Bay Lightning. He then touched on the second round series in Florida and the upcoming Battle of Alberta.  Speaking of the Battle of Alberta, Bob Stauffer, the host of OilersNow, joined the guys later on in the show. Stauffer took a deep dive into the second round series between the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames. He spoke about what this series means for the two cities, compared the two teams, and injuries in both lineups.  Between interviews, Mike and Scott discussed game one in Colorado last night and the two new coaching hires in the NHL.  Hosted on Acast. We are now in the middle of the first round of the NHL's Stanley Cup playoffs, and there is plenty to discuss. With only one series complete, 14 teams remain, with many looking like they could get pushed to seven games.  On episode 34 of The Suitcase and The Scribe, Mike McKenna and Scott Burnside start in the Pacific Division. Last night, the Los Angeles Kings had a huge win in overtime, beating the Edmonton Oilers 5-4. The Oilers were in full control of this series and now are one game away from dropping out in the first round. What has happened to them?  Another team that has struggled in the first round in years past is the Toronto Maple Leafs. However, they are now one game away from knocking out the back-to-back defending Stanley Cup Champions. Mike and Scott talked about the leadership on that team and how vital game six is for the Leafs.  Some know playoff news that happened this week was that Barry Trotz is no longer with the New York Islanders. Scott Burnside sounds off on his feelings towards Lou Lamoriello and Trotz's future.  Additionally, Mike and Scott discussed the remaining series in the postseason and a quick 20-second review of the Colorado and Nashville series courtesy of Mike.  Hosted on Acast. The playoffs are here, and The Suitcase and The Scribe are back to talk about everything that’s happened so far. We have watched all 16 playoff teams play, and we have had a few upset wins. The biggest was the Washington Capitals taking down the Florida Panthers on the road. The Panthers head coach said this was good for his team, but was it?  The Tampa Bay Lightning, the Minnesota Wild and the Edmonton Oilers suffered tough losses too on night one. Mike McKenna and Scott Burnside discussed which one of those teams desperately needs to win game two.  There was plenty to talk about in the goaltending department, too, with Minnesota and Edmonton each facing a controversy. A Mike Smith mistake led to the game-winning goal in Oil Country, but our Mike is here to defend him. Then in Minnesota, was the goaltending to blame or do the Wild just need a better penalty kill? The guys also talked about the officiating in the early days of the playoffs. Many penalties have been called, but how consistent will the officials stay as the playoffs continue.  Finally, Mike and Scott dove into some non-playoff news in Winnipeg, Vancouver and Philadelphia.  Hosted on Acast. It's almost the most wonderful time of the year in the National Hockey League! The playoffs are right around the corner, and all we need to know now is if the Colorado Avalanche play the Dallas Stars or Vegas Golden Knights! Mike McKenna and Scott Burnside are back, too, with another episode of The Suitcase and The Scribe. They are here to get you set up for the postseason with a mini-preview of what's to come. It would not be an episode of The Suitcase and The Scribe if Mike did not talk about goaltending around the NHL. The matchups between the pipes will be great in the playoffs, so Mike revealed which one he's most excited to watch.  However, before that, they are joined by former NHL player John Scott, who also has his show on The Nation Network, Dropping The Gloves.  The three of them dove into John's life from what he's been up to post hockey career, his life in the NCAA with Michigan Tech, and his upcoming movie. They also spoke about John's NHL fandom and his predictions for the Stanley Cup.  You can hear all of that and more on today's episode of The Suitcase and The Scribe.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Welcome back to another episode of The Suitcase and The Scribe with Mike McKenna and Scott Burnside, only on Daily Faceoff. Mike and Scott were joined today by special guest David Carle. Carle is the Head Coach of the University of Denver Pioneers. The Pioneers recently won their ninth NCAA National Championship after beating Minnesota State University 5-1.  Carle spoke about the run to the final game and how the team came together. He talked about the team's leadership from players like Bobby Brink, who signed with the Philadelphia Flyers last week. He also dove into his career and how he became the coach of the University of Denver.  Before Carle joined the show, Mike and Scott spoke about the NHL's playoff picture.  The Eastern Conference is set with all eight teams clinching spots; however, the Western Conference still has plenty to play for, with the Vancouver Canucks, Vegas Golden Knights, and LA Kings still battling for spots in the Pacific Division.  Mike also spoke about some goaltending decisions that need to be made, especially in Minnesota and St Louis. The Wild and Blues will face each other in the first round, but who's playing between the pipes? You can hear all of that and more on today's episode of The Suitcase and The Scribe.  Hosted on Acast. Mike McKenna and Scott Burnside are back with another Wednesday edition of The Suitcase and The Scribe. We are now in crunch time in the NHL, with the playoff picture moulding closer to its final shape every day. The battle in the Eastern Conference is all but set; however, it's an entirely different story in the West. The LA Kings have dropped off recently, which has opened the door for the Vegas Golde Knights.  Mike and Scott predict how things finish up in the Pacific Division.  While the playoff race is over for many teams, one thing they need to address is the coaching. Who is out the door this offseason? Who comes in? Who stays? The guys took a look at the coaching landscape around the NHL. Finally, Owen Power, the first overall pick from the 2021 NHL Draft, made his NHL debut last night for the Buffalo Sabres in his hometown of Toronto. Mike McKenna spoke about Power's game and why he'll have success early with the Sabres.  That also led to the conversation about college signings and how ridiculous it is that Hobey Baker winner Dryden McKay is struggling to find a job.  You can hear all of that and more now on episode 30 of The Suitcase and The Scribe. The episode is now available wherever you get your podcasts. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Wednesday is here, which means it's time for a new episode of The Suitcase and The Scribe with Mike McKenna and Scott Burnside! Mike and Scott are joined by Dave Poulin on today's show. Poulin played over 700 games in the NHL and was the captain of the Philadelphia Flyers for six years in the 1980s. Now, he's working with TSN as a hockey analyst.  They dove into Poulin's new career in media and how that came to be. He spoke about communication with TSN and how he came close to joining the Sportsnet panel. Mike and Scott asked him if he saw any similarities between Auston Matthews and Mike Bossy. Poulin gave a great answer and then dove into some Bossy stories.  After their chat with Poulin, Mike and Scott talked about what went down in the NHL last night. Specifically, what happened between the Florida Panthers and the Toronto Maple Leafs. That led directly into playoff talk in the Eastern Conference and some of the possible matchups we could see.  In the Western Conference, the question most revolves around who can beat the Colorado Avalanche rather than who are the contenders. Could it be Minnesota? Do the Oilers have a chance? Is Calgary the real deal?  The show concluded by discussing Anaheim Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf who announced his retirement yesterday.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Mike McKenna and Scott Burnside were joined by one of the newest members of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Nick Paul, on this week's episode of The Suitcase and The Scribe.  Paul told Mike and Scott about his journey to the NHL through the Senators organization and the strong support system around him. Now with the Lightning, he mentioned the differences between the two franchises and what he hopes to contribute to the lineup. Finally, he touched on his community work in Ottawa and hoped to continue what he started.  After their talk with Paul ended, Mike and Scott dove into the news around the National Hockey League, starting with the Colorado Avalanche.  Nathan MacKinnon is out of the Avalanches lineup for the foreseeable future after fighting with Matt Dumba. The guys briefly discussed if a star player like MacKinnon needed to drop the gloves. With MacKinnon out, it's a massive blow to the Colorado lineup and could've been avoided.  The NHL General Managers meetings are happening right now in Florida, and it's been reported that there will be changes to No Trade Lists. This all occurs after what happened with Evgenii Dadonov. Mike's a big fan of this and goes on to explain why.  They also discussed the Vegas Golden Knights, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Ottawa Senators.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
The NHL trade deadline has now come and gone. We now know what all 32 teams look like as we approach the most exciting time of the year, the playoffs.  On today’s episode of The Suitcase and The Scribe, Mike McKenna and Scott Burnside go around the league discussing the deals that went down on deadline day and in the week building up. A few big names got moved, including Claude Giroux, Marc-Andre Fleury and Mark Giordano. They discussed which of those players will have the most significant impact on their new team and how much they forced their old General Managers hands.  A couple of those moves really impacted the Eastern Conference. On top of Giroux and Giordano, the New York Rangers made a splash acquiring Andrew Copp, making them a top threat in the Metro division. The addition of Rakell to the Pittsburgh Penguins will create an exciting postseason too. They also dove into the Western Conference talking about the St Louis Blues, Colorado Avalanche, and Vegas Golden Knights.  Finally, they end the show asking which players we could see moved around draft time and before free agency.  Listen to all of that and more on this weeks episode of The Suitcase and The Scribe. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Scott Burnside went solo for today's The Suitcase and the Scribe special! On today's show, Scott is joined by former NHLer Colby Armstrong, the 2004 Stanley Cup winning General Manager Jay Feaster, and the Director of Team Services & Player Relations for the Nashville Predators, Brandon Walker.  Each guest gives a different perspective on the trade deadline and the experiences they have gone through. Colby Armstrong spoke about when he was traded from the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Atlanta Thrashers for Marian Hossa. He also talked about the lead up to the trade and unexpected it was.  Jay Feaster gave the perspective of a General Manager. He spoke about his time with the Tampa Bay Lightning and the 2004 Stanley Cup winning season. Feaster mentions the job the current Lightning General Manager is doing, Julien Brisebois, is doing too.  Finally, Brandon Walker is last in the queue. He and Scott talked about how it goes behind the scenes with equipment, getting the players to the rink, and helping players out with their families.  You can see Scott and the rest of the Daily Faceoff team on deadline day across all your social media channels. Daily Faceoff will be your one-stop-shop for everything on deadline day. Tune in to the live show starting at noon eastern.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
