Description

Walk a Mile in Their Shoes is a Carlton Respects podcast which tells the stories of those who have experienced or been victims of gender inequality and/or domestic violence. Hosted by Tarang Chawla, the three-part series encourages listeners to take an empathetic approach to victims and put themselves 'in their shoes'.

Each episode covers a different theme, using the experiences of our guests to help show the complexity often associated with acts of gender inequality and domestic violence.

The show features Simone O'Brien, Daniel and Luke from YiaYia Next Door and award-winning sports journalist Megan Hustwaite.

Content Warning. Domestic violence, harassment, death.  Walk a Mile in Their Shoes deals with themes of domestic violence, harassment, stalking and death. Please listen with care if any of these are triggering for you.  In the second episode of Walk a Mile in Their Shoes, we join our guests as they relive the traumatic events that have, unfortunately, brought us all to this show.  We relive the night that Simone was ruthlessly attacked by her former partner, the tragedy experienced by Luke and Daniel as they learned of their mother’s murder and the harassment and bullying that took place at Megan’s former workplace.  In doing this, we begin to understand the different levels of gender-based violence, the common patterns which emerge among all cases and try to understand just how these events continue to happen all too often.  We explore how more common ‘day-to-day’ events - such as language and bullying, can often be the gateway to more serious outcomes.  We also look at the prolonged impact that the trauma suffered can have on our victims as well as those who surround them.    If you, a child, or another person is in immediate danger, call your local emergency service. Simone was a happy mum of three, thinking about re-entering the dating world again at 37. While she didn’t know the typical behaviour of someone in a relationship, she did know that something wasn’t sitting quite right in her new relationship. Megan is an award-winning journalist who dreamed of entering sports media since the tender age of eight. When Megan finally achieved her goal, things weren't as easy as she might have anticipated. She began to learn how a young female might be treated in a male-dominated industry. Luke and Daniel were happy boys who were loved by their family and friends. As they grew older, however, they began to become more aware of their father’s traditional views, temper and treatment of their mother. All four talk about the red flags they saw before facing their life-changing incidents, as well as what they wished they knew what to look out for beforehand.   If you, a child, or another person is in immediate danger, call your local emergency service.
