Hi, I am Pamela and I breed British Shorthairs in Perth, Western Australia. I have a passion for cat breeding and I want to share my knowledge and experience with you. In this episode I answer the question "How can I tell if my breeding queen in pregnant?" and I share the secret for knowing with 100% accuracy how many kittens your cat will have.
In this podcast I talk about how girls behave when they are in season or "calling", what you can do about it and how I have dealt with it over the years. I share what a calling girl sounds like and talk about why they scream and call out like they do. The podcast I mention is no longer available online. I will update this page should it be made available again.
In this episode of the Cat Breeding for Beginners Podcast I talk about "Neonatal Isoerythrolysis" or what I call Blood Type Incompatibility in cats. This is really important in some breeds and something not all new breeders know about. It can be devastating to lose kittens and not understand why. It's even worse when in could have been prevented. Learn what it is, how to work out who can go with who and what to do if you do have incompatible breeding cats.
** Please note, I realised that I mentioned the blood types you can get from a blood type incompatible mating. That if dad is Ab then some kittens can be A blood type. This is correct but I think I said they could be AA. Mum is bb so no kittens can be AA. They can only be Ab or bb. It's confusing right!!
Stud Cats. I get asked more questions about them than anything else. In this episode of the Cat Breeding for Beginners Podcast I talk about desexing and retiring stud cats. I share a few of my personal experiences plus I discuss some of the things that are important to me about how we value and treat our cats once they have finished making their contribution to our breeding hobby. Please note I do say that I prepared my big boy Teddy to be rehomed. I did mean to say retired. He was never going anywhere. He was always a forever boy for me :).
There are too many cats in the world. It's a fact. There are more cats than there are homes wanting to adopt cats. In this podcast I chat about rescue work and how this is not in line with cat breeding but how it comes up as something in our hobby. I look at how we can work together and how you can help without putting your own cats at risk.

Breeding cats is all about timing. You need to wait for certain things to line up at the right time in order to have a successful mating and then a successful litter. One if those things is your girl coming into season. She needs to be calling to be mated. It's frustrating when you are ready but she isn't. So what can you do? We judge cats by Phenotype and not by Genotype. What does that even mean. I know if you go to enough shows you will hear these words. Let me explain them in a super basic way for you. I often find that I am defending myself when it come to the way I keep my cats. In breeding circles I hear wow, they are so well kept and spoiled. Outside of the hobby I get asked do they ever get to go outside?, do they live their life in a cage?, do these ones get to come in the house? And its a struggle because my heart wants the very best life for my cats and the judgements really bring out the guilt. That is why I focus on enrichment for my cats. Making their lives better by making sure there is always something to see and do, things happening for them. Enrichment is so important to me and in this podcast I give you some ideas for your cattery and cats too.
